Review: Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key

Joey Pigza is the main character of this book. He accidentally hurts people in this book. He does not mean to hurt the people at all. Joey went to a play and the person on the stage said to do a good deed for the day. So he went to the classroom and was making bumper stickers for the world. He went to get his teacher's sharp scissors, but a girl came out in front of him. The scissors cut off the girls nose tip- oh no.

In my opinion, the author is trying to say that if you have a problem, there are ways to get help. People who need help should never give up. I believe his purpose in writing this book was to help kids just like me and other kids with problems. When you read this book it helps to show you there are other kids just like you. My favorite part of the book is when Joey goes on a field trip. He goes to an old Amish farm and he was being good for awhile. He wanted a slice of the pie that everyone else got a piece. He could not because it would make him too hyper, so he went off on his own with a whole pie to himself. He went into the barn. He tried to fly like a bird. He was not seriously hurt. He just sprained his ankle.

The type of person that would like reading this book is someone that likes humor. Also a child having problems at school may enjoy this book too. It shows that even when you try your hardest things can still go wrong. It will make them feel better to know there are other kids just like them. Plus, during the whole book they get to laugh an awful lot. My opinion of the whole book is I liked it a whole lot. When I read it I laughed a lot. I would really recommend this book to someone because it made me like these types of books more than I did before.

Summary: Good for adults, but not kids
Review: I have a 10 year old son with ADHD, and I would not recommend this book for children like my son. The book gives interesting insights into the problems suffered by the hyperactive child, but it doesn't offer any real solutions, and certainly not a happy ending. My son's behavior is nowhere near as dysfunctional as Joey's and it would make him feel really bad to read this book, seeing how nothing really helped Joey. I also think the recommended age range should start at age 12 at least. I don't think younger kids would have the emotional maturity to appreciate it. As an adult, however, I thought it was very well written and poignant.

Review: Joey Pigza is hyperactive and nothing seems to calm him down. Not his medicine, not his teachers, nothing. Does Joey Pigza ever learn to behave? Find out in this great book!

Review: The story starts off with a boy who can't control himself because he has a disorder. He is always very active and can't control it. He takes medication, but the pills wear off really fast. He has the diorder called ADD, when he was at school he did some serious things that hurt some other people. He put his finger inside the pencil sharpener; swallowed his house key; and he ran through the class with a sharp pair of scissors, which harmed one of his classmates seriously. He was sent to a special education center, where he was helped by a teacher that helped him a lot. He got special pills that worked a lot better, and he wasn't as hyper. He went back to his normal school and there he sat in the Big Quiet Chair to read a book.
I liked this book because it tells a story about a boy who can't keep himself still. The vocabulary in the book is very advanced and it is a challenging book. There are parts where you can't pull away from the book because you are to into it. The book is very fun and the author wrote the book very well.
My favorite part in the book was when Joey was running in the classroom with a sharp pair of scissors. When he fell and cut part of the girl's ear is very gruesome and exciting. It makes your heart pound for what might come next in the story. The detail the author put in the book to make the scene almost come alive, like it were all happening right there and now. It's make the story more interesting and more fun to read.

Summary: Serious not funny
Review: ... Joey Pigza is a boy with a severe case of ADHD. This book is a wonderful look inside his mind where the reader gets to experience some of the feelings that such a child must go through every day. Every teacher, and many students, can remember a child who was a good kid, but always out of control. Joey was that boy and through this book many will get to see what they experience.

He is sent to Special Ed classrooms and even a special school. His medicines cause him to go up and down and are never quite right. He realizes the attention he gets for his actions so that is part of what keeps him going. Joey is unable to concentrate though and at times his narration of the story is a little bit jumpy to reflect that.

I expected this book to be used well in classrooms to help understand ADHD with all students. The students are in the regular classroom and educators should treat it as any other disability. The only way to have people be comfortable with is to introduce them to it in a positive way. ...

Why 5 stars?:
This book has a lot of potential to be used to help children and teachers understand the difficulties a student with ADHD must face. However, I'm disappointed that it does not seem as though it is being well (judging by some of the other reviews on this page by children).

Summary: Really silly book......
Review: Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key is a really good book, I think. It made me laugh at some parts, and feel bad for Joey at other parts.

The book is about Joey Pigza, who is an 9-year-old boy with Attention Defesit Disorder. Sometimes his medication works, and he is just like a normal kid. But at other parts, he goes completely crazy. In one chapter, he and his class were visiting an Amish farm, and his teacher told him he could not eat a piece of the Shoofly Pie that was offered because he would get too hyper. But, instead, Joey sneaks away and eats a whole pie!!

This book is really funny.

The author, Jack Gantos, came to my school in Tokyo. I really liked his presentation. He said his books are based on reall people, so they aren't just fantasy.

A great read.

Review: Joey is the craziest, wild, and funniest character I've ever read about. If you like comedy, you should read this book. Joey's parents leave him with his grandma. His grandma is wired just like he is. She does some crazy things, like trap him in the refrigerator. Later on, Joey's mom comes back to live with him and his grandma. Joey never seems to be able to stay focused in school. He always gets into trouble, like trying to cut his fingernails in the pencil sharpener, and swallowing his house key. Because his behavior he is sent to Special Education. I'd say he has a pretty messed up family.

Summary: Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key
Review: Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key, written by Jack Gantos, is the finalist for the 1998 National Book Award for Children's Literature. It is about a child, Joey Pigza, who needs medication to control his inherited hyperactivity. When the effect of the medicine has worn off, however, his behavior leads to bizarre incidents, such as swallowing the house key. The worst episode is when he carelessly handles a pair of very sharp scissors and cuts off the tip of a classmate's nose. He gets suspended for six weeks, and during that time, he is sent to the special education center downtown, where a doctor diagnoses him and prescribes a different medication. This helps him to behave well for a longer period of time.
This book is worth reading mainly because it is funny. For example, when Joey is asked a question, he raises his hand and responds, "Can I get back to you on that? Joey's swallowing his house key is another hilarious example. One day, he is playing around with his house key in class, using the string on it like a fishing line, trying to swallow it. Mrs. Maxy, his teacher, sees him, takes his key away, cuts the string off, and puts the key in his shirt pocket. Soon, he sees his chance; he takes it out, puts it in his mouth, and "gulp" down his throat it goes. The incidents told from Joey's point of view are not only funny but also show what it is like to be hyperactive.
My favorite part of the book is when Joey's mom comes home after being gone for so long. (When Joey was five, his father left him, and his mother went after him, so Joey was left with his grandmother.) She apologizes for abandoning Joey, and his grandmother's retort implies that she didn't want her to return. Then, when she sees Joey, she says, "Hi, Joey. I'm your mom." I found this part funny because of the way she introduced herself, and the fact that she was his mother acting like acquaintance seemed strange, especially when he couldn't recognize her.

Summary: Funny and Crazy
Review: Have you ever stuck your finger in a pencil sharpener, jumped out of a barn, or cut the tip off of a girls nose? If you have or haven't, this is a good book to read! Joey Pigza is a very wild and crazy kid with ADHD. In this book Joey learns to control his behavior and feel like a normal kid. I recommend this book to any kid with or without ADHD. If you have ADHD you will understand and if you don't, you will think twice before you make fun of a kid with behavior problems.
