Rating: Summary: My Choice Review: Joey Pigza Loses Control (the sequel to the National Book Award Finalist Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key) is a Newbery Honor book written by Jack Gantos. It is about a child named Joey Pigza, who needs medication to control his hyperactivity. In this book, Joey goes to visit his father, who is also hyper. During this stay, Joey joins the Police Athletic League baseball team as a pitcher. His games start out well, but as he nears the finals, he starts acting up. This is not particularly his fault, because his father has flushed his medication down the toilet, thinking that Joey can control himself without it. During the championship game, he flees from the pitcher¡¦s mound because he can no longer stand his father¡¦s yelling at him, and he runs to call his mother to come pick him up. I thought that Joey Pigza Loses Control was rather disappointing. The plot itself was not as exciting as Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key, and Joey¡¦s father, as a character, made this an unpleasant book. His talkativeness and attitude toward Joey while Joey was pitching ruined the atmosphere of this book. In addition, his father¡¦s driving after drinking and verbal abuse made this book uncomfortable to read. Even the visit to the amusement park did not convince me that it was amusing. Contrary to the prequel, none of the wacky episodes in this book made me laugh. Overall, Joey Pigza Loses Control was not as clever as the book preceding it. I chose to read this book for several reasons. For one thing, I had thoroughly enjoyed Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key, so I thought that its sequel would also be a good book. I also picked up this book because the cover was very interesting. It showed an out-of-control child and his dog falling down. This appealed to me because I don¡¦t often find covers that show such unusual scenes. A third reason I decided to read this book is because it was given a Newbery Honor award, and books with such recognition are likely to be worth reading. Despite these attention-grabbing factors, this book was not what I expected.
Rating: Summary: THIS BOOK IS DA BOMB!!!!!!! Review: This book is about a boy who is in special-ed and takes medication. His name is Joey. His Mom is driving him to his Dads' house. His Dad had divorced his Mom a little while ago. Joey wants to go to his Dad's house really badly because he doesn't really know his Dad, but his Mom isn't so crazy about that idea. Joey's Dad is a little crazy also, because he drinks and smokes. When Joey gets to his Dad's house, his Dad wants to get to know his son some more. Joey's Dad lets Joey play for his baseball team. The first sentence of the book is, "We were on our way to Dad's house and Mom had her hands clamped tightly around the wheel as if she had me by the neck. I like that sentence because it has a simile and is vivid. The last sentence of the book is, "She never could do two things at once, which was good because when it came to hugging me, I wanted her all to myself." I like that sentence because it is sweet and is a good ending. Also, Joey and his Dad have lots of adventures. Joey's feelings change during the story. In the beginning, he really wants to see his Dad. In the end, he wants to go back to his Mom and leave his Dad. I recommend that the age group for this book is 8-12. I think this because it has hard words, but has bigger print, which makes it easier. The book is by Jack Gantos. other books by Jack Gantos are: HOLE IN MY LIFE, JOEY PIGZA: SWALLOWED THE KEY, JACK'S BLACK BOOK, AND HEADS OR TAILS: STORIES FROM THE SIXTH GRADE. Joey Pigza: Loses Control was published in 2000. It won a Newberry Honor Award in 2001. I think you should read this book because it's exciting, suspensful, interseting, and adventorous. It is interesting because it has funny and O.K settings. It also has intriguing questions to make you want to read more. The writing stlye of Jack Gantos is funny and kidlike which means he likes writing funny stories for kids. He writes books that are funny with lots of jokes in them. The mood of the book is funny, but is a little serious with all the drugs and smoking. From this book, Jack Gantos wants you to learn that you should be happy with who you are, that everyone is different in the world. This book is Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. To be more specific, it takes place in his Dad's house most of the time. A kind of reader that would like this book is a funny person, and a person with a sense of humor because if you don' have a sense of humor, then you wouldn't think this book is funny, which is one of the book's good qualities. the genre of the book is that it is exciting, adventorous, and funny. The form of the writing is in a paragraph. Everyone should read this book because it is one of the best books I've ever read.

Rating: Summary: Do you know what it's like to have ADHD? Review: Well Joey Pigza does. Joey Pigza is the main charcter in Joey pigza loses control by Jack Gantos. His dad,mom and grdanma are other characters in this book. One of the two canflicts in this book Joey has to chose to live with his mom or dad. His dad has alcholoism. Another conflict is Joey has to stay on his medacation or off them. His medacation helps him with his ADHD. Read this book to find out what he decides to do. I recomond this book to people with ADHD and to people who know people with ADHD. I like this book because it's funny and tells how he is coping with this disorder. ADHD is Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder.
Rating: Summary: Let's drug our children! Review: Who wrote this book, Novartis? (The makers of Ritalin.) Let's teach our children to take drugs to curb their natural childish exuberance, I'm sure it will teach them to take drugs for every little problem all through their life. I'm sure the greedy psychologists and drug companies LOVE this book, as well as lazy teachers who would like for their students to sit through class like zombies and substandard parents who'd rather not work at parenting, but I'd hate to have the writing or promotion of this book on MY conscience.
Rating: Summary: Joey Pigza Loses Control Review: Joey Pigza Loses Control is a very touching book. In this story, Joey learns to cope with his father and baseball coach(Carter Pigza), his Grandma, taking care of his dog Pablo, and attention-deficit disorder. Joey tells his own story as he even battles life for awhile without his meds. This book will keep you turning the pages all night long while crying, laughing, and going through Joey's summer with his father as he sees it.
Rating: Summary: Joey Pigza Loses Control Review: How would you feel if you were about to spend the summer with someone you hardly knew? And to top it off, what if that person was your father? Meet Joey Pigza, a high wired kid who sometimes tends to "go nuts." Joey takes medication in the form of patches too keep him from getting too hyper, too "out of control." Though Joey's mother is reluctant, she still agrees to let Joey spend his summer vacation with Carter, his alcoholic father. Between Joey's father flushing his patches down the toilet, and taking midnight trips to Storybook Land, Joey tries to help his father experience something he never has before-winning! As you can assume, Joey's summer turns into one big adventure with a million twists and turns and ups and downs. He is forced to keep it together and as his dad says "be a man." If you're young, (Ages 10-12), or just young at heart, this book is for you. The dialogue in this book is very real and flows extremely well. The quality of the first person narrative is exceptional. The vocabulary is very comprehendable which results in an easy and quick read that provides frequent laughs along the way. For example, Joey, when speaking of his best friend Pablo, his pet chihuahua, he says,"Pablo didn't kiss anything, but he did do his business in someone's front yard and then got snappish with a toy poodle and I had to separate them." This displays realistic 9 year old thinking, is easy to understand, and is oddly funny. The reader truly can better understand the mind of a child with ADD through the narration. For instance, Joey says "Inside my head there was a hissing sound like someone poked a hole inside me and whatever control was left inside me was leaking out." Readers will enjoy learning about Joey, in Joey Pigza Loses Control. It tells the whole story inside and out of this young boy's summer journey and how it just may have changed his way of thinking. So whether you yourself are out of control or not, read Joey Pigza Loses Control.
Rating: Summary: A must read Review: I just finished Jack Gantos's book Joey Pigza Loses Control and it was really good. Joey wanted to go to Story Book Land and when he got there he really didn't like Story Book Land because to him the characters were scary. I liked the book because it shows how the boy handled his dad's anger when Joey did nothing to offend his dad in any way. I would not like to be Joey in the story because I would have too many problems. If you like problem books try this book.
