Summary: Very informative and entertaining!
Review: I got this book during my first pregnancy. I wanted something that could explain things to me in more of an informal "layman" sort of way. That's exactly what this book did. Vicki went about explaining pregnancy from her understanding and point of view based on her own experiences and experiences of her close friends. She did a good job with the disclaimer in the beginning, so that I understood that there were alot of her opinions included which were not necessarily fact. I knew how seriously to take the book. I appreciated that the book went into the fears and feelings many pregnant women (and husbands!) have, that a doctor may not address. For instance, she mentioned her dislike of maternity underwear and I could totally relate! This is definitely a companion book to something more technical and backed by facts such as "What to Expect When You're Expecting". This is a great book. The reader just needs to make sure to take it for what the author is offering: her personal view and understanding of pregnancy.

Summary: Funny, helpful advice
Review: I have already recommended this book to everyone else I know that is pregnant. Since this is my first pregnancy and I don't have the benefit of a mother who is still living, this was the next best thing. I laughed so hard reading this that my husband kept coming in and wanting to know what was so funny. The examples of "girlfriends" pregancy experience were so helpful and it is good to know that I am not losing my mind or doing something wrong--I am just pregnant! I have the books with all the medical facts and details but I just needed a girlfriend to give me the real scoop on this pregnancy thing! Thanks Vickie!

Summary: In poor taste
Review: I bought this book only to find myself returning it the following day. Although there were some good tips, the author's "potty mouth" took away from anything of great value written here & she definitely did not write this for the average woman in America .If you have any amount of class, not to mention want a more informative medical guide to pregnancy, get a more informative book like "What to expect while your'e expecting"

Summary: A Must Have
Review: I am expecting for the first time and have been scouring the book stores for informative books about pregnancy. This is the perfect supplement to the more comprehensive pregnancy books available(The Unofficial Guide to Having a Baby). Although some of the other books are very informative about the science behind pregnancy and it symptoms and complications, this book is a breath of fresh air. It gives the reader a down to earth, "my best girlfriend" approach to pregnancy, that reasures you that your pregnancy symptoms (physical and emotional) are normal and that you can laugh about them. You have to use your best judgement or other resources for the more complicateted intracacies of pregnancy, but she does a great job of reminding us that throughout pregnancy we are still human, with individual physical changes that may happen, human emotions and imperfections. It's not the end of the world if you don't follow every diet plan, excercise plan, or every inch of advice given by some other comprehensive resources. This book is definate must have for expectant moms.

Summary: Your New Best Girlfriend
Review: I recently found out I'm pregnant for the first time, and sorting through the piles of pregnancy books and manuals in the bookstore, I came across The Girlfriend's Guide. I was laughing by the time I read the second sentence. Vicki Iovine has provided a candid, hilarious, and informative guide about everything a mother-to-be can expect. She provides stories and examples from her friends' pregnancies, as well as her own, to assure any woman that what she's experiencing is normal. She also lays to rest many of the old wives tales and exaggerated dangers concerning pregnancy. Having read this book, I feel relieved, excited, and much more prepared. I plan on buying this book as a gift for any of my friends when they get pregnant.

Summary: I Wanted to Throw Away this Book after Reading it Because...
Review: the information in this book doesn't apply to most people as it claims to and made me feel depressed that all I could do while pregnant was eat and get fat. The chapter about exercise is inaccurate and depressing to say the least. If you're a couch potato and plan to stay that way while pregnant than this is the book for you. If you're active and plan to live your life while pregnant DO NOT get this book. As my doctor told me everyone has a bad story about pregnancy and not to listen to them, my advice is the same for this book, it seams to be full of bad stories and experiences and shouldn't be bought.

Summary: Very funny - not to be taken seriously
Review: I thought the book was very funny. I didn't agree with all her views on natural childbirth, among other things, but it didn't bother me too much because I read it for entertainment value. I did get some good tips here and there.

I was annoyed at the endless references to her formerly "skinny self." Well, she is a former Playboy centerfold!

Read it for fun, but don't expect to use it as a medical reference!

Summary: The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy : Or Everything Your Doc
Review: I am from the Caribbean and even though some of the information did not apply because of the cultural and economic differences, I found the book to be so very comforting in this my first pregnancy! The author is a bit 'raw' at times but she suceeds in getting the message across that it is natural to be unnatural when you are carrying that precious bundle.

I truly enjoyed the author's sense of humour. I have lent this book to a friend and she read it in a flash. She is going to order one. I am definitely going to recommend it to others. This 'comfort book' as I call it, is a gem!

Maybe the author could do a sequel!

Summary: Vicki Tells It Like It Is
Review: What a hoot! No more scary pregnancy books as gifts to new moms! This lady tells the absolute truth about pregnancy with a wit and humor that only your best girlfriend could rival. Try her other two books as well. I loved it and this wasn't even my first pregnancy! This lady shoots straight from the hip about stuff those other books don't, like how to get you maternity outfits together without looking too wierd, and the truth about your figure afterward. Buy it without any fear of regret, smiles guaranteed.

Summary: Absolutely Hilarious
Review: OK, as someone who supports natural childbirth and healthy living in general, I probably shouldn't be recommending this book. That having been said, I give this book [either loaned or as a gift] to every pregnant Girlfriend I have. Its just simply hilarious.

This is NOT the book you use as your "real" guide to pregnancy. You should have another book [I would suggest "The Pregnancy Book" by Dr. Sears] for that purpose. But if you crave some humor and a great feeling of camraderie, this is a wonderful book for "light reading". I've read my copy several times and I know I'll re-read it with my next pregnancy. It is a fun read all the way around.

I do get a little annoyed with a couple of things - the author was apparently a Size 4 when she got pregnant and she goes on and on about how "fat and huge" she got when pregnant [gaining 40 pounds]. Later in the book, you find out that she went all the way up to a [GASP!] size 10 while pregnant. For many of us a size 10 is great on a non-pregnant day and I found that a little insulting. [I'd never think of a size 10 as "huge and fat" personally].

I also thought she portrayed her husband as a jerk and not very supportive of her pregnancies. This got generalized to all "daddies to be" in my opinion. My experience [and that of many women I know] was that of having an amazingly supportive and enthusiastic husband/partner. Some guys just don't get into the pregnant thing I guess, but I didn't like the general tone I got regarding daddies in this book. [I think daddies are extremely important].

Other than those two beefs though, I thought the book was wonderful. I laughed out loud non-stop and it was just generally a mood lifter for me [and for my Girlfriends who have read it at my suggestion]. I think you can really enjoy this book if you don't take it at all seriously.
