Rating: Summary: This is the best book I have ever read. Review: After having six children, and purchasing a new book with each, I must say that this was THE MOST HELPFUL AND REASSURING BOOK on pregnancy that I have ever read. I recommend it to all my "Girlfriends"
Rating: Summary: Forget this book! Review: This woman is trying to be funny but winds up looking ridculous. She even states that she knows enough about pregnancy to deliver your baby in the back of a taxi by cesarean or vaginally. I spent much of the time reading it wanting to vomit.Just goes to prove what I said earlier to my husband, "Don't trust a playboy bunny for pregnancy advice..."
Rating: Summary: WORTH EVERY STRETCH MARK Review: WHAT A GREAT RELIEF!! BEING A SECOND TIME EXPECTANT MOM, THIS WAS THE PERFECT BOOK. THE FIRST TIME AROUND, I DID THE SAME AS THE AUTHOR, READ EVERYTHING I COULD GET MY HANDS ON. THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE ONLY BOOK I READ. WHAT A WONDERFULL WAY TO VIEW PREGNANCY, WITH MUCH NEEDED HUMOR. SO MANY OF US ARE SCARED, EMBARRASED AND SURE NO ONE ELSE HAS HAD OR IS HAVING THE SAME THOUGHTS AND QUESTIONS AS OURSELVES. THIS GUIDE PUTS ASIDE THOSE THOUGHTS COMPLETELY. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ALL EXPECTANT MOMS, BE IT THE FIRST OR TENTH BABY YOU HAVE HAD. THANK YOU VICKI FOR YOUR HONESTY. KELLY KORTIER
Rating: Summary: I LOVED THIS BOOK!! Review: During my pregnancy I read 2 pregnancy books and was terrified when it discussed all the things that can go wrong, the diets you have to follow, etc. This book was quick reading, it answered my questions and it was hilarious to read. Since then I recommend to all my friends to read this book.
Rating: Summary: Laughing Hysterically from Texas!!!!!!!!!! Review: This books is wonderful. It is not and never was intended to be a medical reference manual, but it is so funny you will actually laugh out loud - my husband thought I was nuts!!! Vicky gives straigtforward advice on everything from labor to constipation the way your best friends would "lay it on the line". Quite a refreshing change from all the other books that can sometimes frighten you. A must read for any expecting mommy. I plan to buy subsequent book "A Girlfriends Guide to Surviving the First Year of Motherhood"!!!!!
Rating: Summary: Emphasizes the horrors of pregnancy. Review: While the author is very funny about many aspects of pregnancy, she portrays the pregnant woman as a helpless victim of the medical system.
Rating: Summary: This is for humor ONLY. Review: Ms. Iovine is, indeed, very funny, and I laughed out loud at many parts. Valuable as far as the little tidbits about what happens to your body (and your mind!) when pregnant; all those unexpected weirdnesses that you thought only happened to you. Good for empathy. But I'm actually quite insulted by her attitude towards women who don't plan to automatically hook themselves to an epidural and take every single word their obstetrician says as gospel. The tired old attitude of "You don't get any medals for giving birth naturally" pops up quite a bit, and she characterizes women who do so as unprepared losers who show up to the hospital with a few breathing exercises and an Enya tape. If Iovine really thinks this is what natural childbirth is all about, and thinks that "a medal" is the motivation for women who want it, then she's clearly not much of a "Girlfriend" after all. (But FUNNY!)
Rating: Summary: Yes, I laughed. But I was horrified at some attitudes... Review: Vicki Iovine's advice seems to be: get to the hospital, get the drugs and get the baby out. A holistic approach, this is not. If you are planning a home birth, steer clear. The 'foolish man' attitude to partners wore a bit thin after a while too. Forget this book, and get Vicki Iovine's Diary instead. It's got all the funny bits (copied directly from the above book) to do with fashion and feelings, without all the dodgy healthcare advice.
Rating: Summary: Reminds me of something Erma Bombeck would have written! Review: After reading so many serious books about what you should or shouldn't do/eat/feel etc., I was growing more and more paranoid about being pregnant. This book made me laugh out loud many times. For the first time I was relaxed and actually started enjoying my pregnancy! Thank you Vicky!
Rating: Summary: The Math Wizard Checks In Review: I enjoyed this whole book, especially as a supplement to more serious pregnancy guides. My one small quibble is with Vicki's insistence that 40 weeks is 10 months, not 9. She's obviously assuming 4 weeks in a month. However, divide 52 weeks in a year by 12 months in a year and you'll find that the average month is 4.3333 weeks long. Divide 40 weeks of pregnancy by 4.3333 weeks in a month, and you get 9.23 months. Granted, it's not exactly 9, but it's closer to 9 than 10. Vicki never did the math or wondered why everyone would say 9 months if it were actually 10, so she has to write "nine (ten)" every time she mentions the months of pregnancy. Sometimes it's worth it to pay attention in math class. Otherwise, very entertaining and comforting read, like having coffee with your friends. I love how frank she is about the sorts of topics I couldn't bear to think about.
