Rating: Summary: GREAT, WONDERFUL,TERRIFIC, A TRUE MUST READ Review: To everyone who is bashing this book--why would you buy a book called "The Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy" and expect it to be a medical tome? Vicki never claims to be a medical expert-just a mommy who has been through all of the weird and wonderful things that happen to all of us when we get pregnant. I read this book BEFORE any of the serious stuff-even before "What to Expect When You're Expecting" and remember more from it than any other book I've read since. I keep "What to Expect" by my bed and refer to it frequently, but when I need a good laugh or to be reminded that I am NOT insane, I turn to The Girlfriend's Guide. I plan to have a natural childbirth, but have a healthy grasp on reality. I may not be able to do it by myself, and Vicki's book sheds a humorous light on a difficult situation.
Rating: Summary: Definately the Best book for a first timer Review: When I found out I was pregnant I was so happy and so scared all at the same time. I tried talking to my mother but she just blew me off. My husband didn't really understand pregnancy because I'm not a cow. I had no girlfriends I felt comfortable talking with. I saw this woman, Vicki on a talk show and I immediately was drawn to her experience and personality. Bought the book that day and I felt so much better. The doctors made everything so complicated. Unfortunately I miscarried at 10 weeks and this part I had to go through alone Vicki was luckily never graced with this tragedy. But definately if you or someone you know is a first timer this book will definately put them at ease and make both the father and pregnant mommy laugh. :-)
Rating: Summary: I don't go anywhere without this book! Review: The Girlfriend's Guide To Pregnancy by Vicki Iovine is unequivocally the best laugh I've had in years. Although I am only halfway through my pregnancy, I already know what joys and horrors lay ahead of me over the next twenty weeks and, due to Iovine's unique and frank perspective on the real truths of pregnancy, I FEAR NOT! When I go to the OB, I quote from the book and everyone in the office gathers around to hear the most outrageously funny and ACCURATE details they all know about preganancy but were undoubtedly concealing from us unsuspecting first time mothers! This book will be my gift to my obstetrician after my delivery! Get this book now and buy ten copies for your friends, family and CERTAINLY your obstetrician!
Rating: Summary: Girlfriends Guide is THE book to own if you're expecting! Review: I loved this book. I found it to be refreshingly honest and funny beyond words. Being pregnant with my first child, it was important to me to get the REAL scoop on what was happening and would happen - the other books gave clinical descriptions and vague lists of "at this month you may experience..." Vicki hits on subjects that most people wouldn't talk about (hemmeroids, for example) and gives you descriptions, her experiences (as well as her girlfriends) and solutions that will have you not only informed, but laughing yourself to the floor. I highly recommend this book for anyone that is expecting - especially if it's your first. GET THE BOOK!!
Rating: Summary: nothing more than entertaining Review: While some of this book brought a smile to my face, other parts made me incredulous. Sometimes, it seems as if Vicki is giving terrible advice. For example, she suggests foregoing all exercise during pregnancy while eating everything your heart desires. She blithely suggests that you can just lose the weight after delivery. With girfriends like this... Read this book for entertainment only. Look to other more factually-based pregnancy books for real advice.
Rating: Summary: I couldn't have said it better myself! THE BEST! Review: Make no mistake, "The Girlfriend's Guide to
Pregnancy is No medical book by doctors. It's
by a really mommy with a sense of humor and
reality! Armed with Vicki (I feel like she knows
me) Iovine and my Week-by-Week (heralded as
the most accurate book to date) book I travelled on
business alone. I had facts, humor and a friend!
The people who don't enjoy this book are only
interested in hard-core medical (albiet scary) facts.
My husband would ask me what Vicki said during
my reading, so I finally bought him "What to expect
when you're wife's expanding" so he could
appreciate the truth & humor in sharing.
An author with heart....when will she write the
instruction manual for raising children? I want
input Vick-ster...call me!!!
Rating: Summary: So honest and so true! Review: This book is refreshing! There are times during pregnancy when the only thing that will make you feel better is A GOOD LAUGH. That's exactly what you get with The Girlfriends Guide... It was never meant to be scientific. It's meant to be light-hearted - Girlfriend to Girlfriend. And I've loaned it to all of my pregnant girlfriends! If you don't like this book, because it's not serious or scientific enough, then you need to go out and get yourself a sense of humor! :
Rating: Summary: Good advise on the non-medical aspects of pregnancy Review: I loved this book. Especially the part on pregnancy insanity. It made me feel like I wasn't a freak to be feeling so emotional all of the time. The advise on maternity clothes is invaluable
Rating: Summary: silly silly silly- and not very helpful Review: not a very good book. Maybe good for a fourth time mother-to-be to read but too many women may think the author knows what she's talking about. She doesn't; even if she is amusing. sure- those of us who believe in "natural birth" don't like it, but we have good reasons for not wanting to be messed with while pregnant, giving birth or learning to breastfeed. We need facts, not frivolity.
Rating: Summary: Hilarious! Just what I needed. Review: I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I'm trying to plan my childbirth, and the serious information overload was getting to be too much. The more I read, the more I stressed out. Then I read this one and laughed myself silly. I agree with many of the previous reviews that it may not thoroughly cover all the technical or critical aspects of pregnancy, but that's not why I bought it. I bought it for a humorous, "gabbing girlfriend" type of perspective, and that's exactly what I got, and needed! As for the worry expressed by several reviewers that this is not a book for the "natural" mother, I disagree. I prefer "natural" methods myself, and this book did not change my mind. It showed me another perspective, and gave some examples that I personally would and would not follow. Throughout the book, however, Vicki Iovine admits the fact that she's opinionated and that not all the choices she made are best for everyone. I never felt pressured by her to go for drugs or other non-natural methods. I just enjoyed the heck out of the book
