Rating: Summary: The male Bridget Jones Review: Definately one for the boys this one. I know a few men who Rob was so like in a number of ways. Thats not to say of course that being a woman I didn't enjoy this. Hornby has such a great writing style and wit that I did find it hard not to laugh out loud at the absurdity the situations he got himself and the musical snobbery. A book that is funny, honest and at times touching and which I suspect, Mr Hornby, was fairly autobiographical. You can't really ask for much more from a novel really can you?
Rating: Summary: Because it's about me, and you, too Review: No-one has written a book in the 90s that more closely defines what it is to be a man in a relationship, and how that relationship interacts with the rest of his life. Scarily, it's just a small part of it, behind many inanimate objects, however they might be meant to embody emotion. Men must read this, and recognise themselves, and women will understand what makes their lump of swaty lard tick. I see myself in it - and I'm only 20, so it appears that this is what I have to look forward to.
Rating: Summary: One of my all time favourite books Review: At least 3 of my friends are sure the book was written about them and, as a baby boomer, just about all my friends totally identify with the characters.Hornby got under the skin of the thirtysomething male and captured in perfectly in words. Having a tape made for you has never been the same since!!!
Rating: Summary: I felt like he had used my relationships as research Review: Laughing and wincing I definatly enjoyed this book. Frightingly accurate
Rating: Summary: An entertaining, penny-pinching ride. Review: A good buy for stressed-out novel dollars. Almost discouraging when the hero doesn't buy a collector's efforts on an almost moral whim. Yet it gets funnier after that! Thank you Mr. Hornby. Cordially, Yves jingting@magma.ca
Rating: Summary: The Best Guy's Book of the 90's Review: Nick Hornby has written a book that any guy will think is semiautobiographical, at the very least. He has masterfully put together the essence of what it is to be a guy in the 90's- relationships and rejection- while living in a world of "Top-5" lists, movie, book and music anecdotes. Hornby has established himself as one of the best young authors out of England without having to resort to or rely upon vulgarity, sexual deviance and ribaldry like his countryman, Hanif Kureishi. This is a true laugh out-loud feel-good book, which shows you that you are not alone in feeling the way you do. Recommend this to as many friends as you can. They've all been there!!!
Rating: Summary: too many albums, too little ambition Review: this book is supposed to be about men in general, what they are all about and why men are as they are. I do not agree. I'ts a book about why men who own too many albums are as they are.
Rating: Summary: Loved this book! Review: This book is by far my favorite humorous book I have read this year. I have recommended it to all my friends, and given numerous copies as gifts. I think women will like it as well as men, although having a good knowledge and appreciation of contemporary popular music will certainly enhance the reader's enjoyment. I laughed non-stop reading this book and went on to read Nick Hornby's other books. Loved them too.
Rating: Summary: It would be in my list of all-time top 5 books Review: Hornby has written a book that captures the essence of being single and thirtysomething. The main character, Rob, expresses his hopes, fears and desires, to us, but like many men, he does not express those things to others, especially to Laura. As I was reading the text I was not always sure if I was reading a novel or an emotional biography of my own life. This is one of those few books that when I was finished reading it, I continued to think about the characters, as if they were real and living real lives somewhere else. This book is a must read for any guy who is thirtysomething and single.
Rating: Summary: I loved this book! Review: This was definitely my read of the summer. Very witty and well written. I often found myself laughing out loud. I passed this book on to several friends who also enjoyed it.
