Rating: Summary: Not one of the top Review: High Fidelity by Nick Hornby is not a very interesting novel because it doesn't have much suspense and there are long passages in which he describes the shop or something else. That is boring but there are also a few funny passages, even if they are rare. The main plot is that Rob Fleming is dumped by all of his girlfriends and now he wants to see them again. Rob is a "macho" because he is egocentric and doesn't think about his girlfriends' emotions and thoughts. Laura, his last split-up dumped him because he didn't develop and she couldn't cope with this situation any longer. The language the book is written in is very colloquial. Rob speaks like a teenager. He isn't very respectful and mature. The language reinforces this and it shows Rob's emotions. This is typical of him. All in all, I think the book has a few funny passages but exept of these it is boring, but readers who like stories of not much suspense and many descriptions would like it.
Rating: Summary: Story of a special character Review: The main character Rob Fleming is left by his girlfriend Laura. He reacts to this split-up by analysing his past, especially his relationships to girls and women. The result is that he changes his way of life and he realizes his mistakes. When laura gets to know Rob's new character she gives him a second chance. Rob, the first-person narrator, describes his character and the change in his life in a direct way by using a colloquial language. The book offers fellings to the reader through the language. We were very impressed by the story told in the book. It's intersting to diskuss the characters and relationships which are mentioned in the story.
Rating: Summary: Music and women that change our lives. Review: Nick Hornby has been called "a maestro of the male confessional" novel. In HIGH FIDELITY, we find his narrator, Rob Fleming, frozen in his mid-thirties and refusing "to get any older" (p. 212). He lives in a one-bedroom flat, and his girlfriend, Laura, has just left him for the guy upstairs. Obsessed with pop music, he owns a vinyl record store and works with two offbeat guys who talk about "sandwich fillings and sax solos all day," and he loves it (p. 278). When it comes to relationships, he calls himself "The Most Pathetic Man in the World" (p. 142) and "the Rejection Man" (p. 173). In fact, he begins the 323-page story of his life with a list of "the top five most memorable split-ups," the "ones that really hurt" him the most (p. 3). But along the way Rob is transformed. He discovers that starring in "a real-life episode of thirtysomething, with all the kids and marriages and jobs and barbeques and k.d. lang CDs" offers more that one could possibly desire (p. 278).HIGH FIDELITY is a love story about the music and the women that change men's lives, and the realities of growing up: loneliness, death and failure. Reading Hornby's novel is like listening to that favorite vinyl album that has become the soundtrack of one's life. And it never skips a groove. G. Merritt
Rating: Summary: Not fascinating Review: The book tells the story about a 35-year old man called Rob. He has his own record shop and many problems with girls and women. His girlfriend Laura left him and now he wants to sort out his old relationships. He calls five girls he once loved to know why they split up. Every woman reacts in a different way. His friends are Barry and Dick who help him in his record shop although there is not much work. Barry is a mess and Dick is very shy. Most of the time the book is easy to read and sometimes even easy to understand. The language reflects Rob's chaotic way of life. There are many trains of thoughts in brackets in some chapters. I would give 2 stars to the book because the book is not fascinating and in many chapters boring because there is no real plot.
Rating: Summary: Comment to High Fidelity Review: High Fidelity is a book that makes you smile, if you can identify yourself with the main character Rob in some ways. Maybe that identifying makes it easier to understand (if your native language is not Englisch). It`s very funny and interesting to read because it is written with the typical British sense of humour. And often you can find a pleasant ironic aftertaste. Dick and Barry, the two guys who work together with Rob and who are his best friends, are two crazy characters. They behave in a more crazy way than Rob does. The music fits to the plot and to Rob's mood (it plays a central role). It explains him: blues and soul! So this guy often expresses his feelings while he uses music. At the beginning, I really hated this book and I did not want to go on because I hated the way he describes himself, his behavior. But as I thought about Rob's story and relationship, I started to like it very much. Rob has a "top five"- list for every situation, every girlfriend and his favourite musicians and songs. That makes the story quite interesting! It even shows how crazy this guy is. All in all it is written in a very great and funny way but there are chapters, too that are very serious. I think that the important things of life are expressed funnily and maybe exactly...
Rating: Summary: Review of High Fidelity Review: The book "High Fidelity" deals with the story of Rob who has his own record shop and who has been left by his girlfriend Laura. Now he wants to start a new life. To clear up he wants to see five of his exes again. I did not like this book very much. For me it was too pretentious because I did not understand much of the vokabulary. I also find the characters of the main persons strange. The book is too unrealistic and too long for the instruction. I think the characters are very crazy. I prefer other books. If I had to give stars to this book, I would choose two stars.
Rating: Summary: Good philosophical passages, but boring plot Review: The book "High Fidelity" is about a guy called Rob, who talkes about his girlfriends and ex-girlfriends through the whole book. It's also a little bit philosophical, because he talks about death. I didn't like the book very much, because there's only a simple, short plot, and a lot of thinking passages. The story wasn't that interesting, but Rob's attitude towards and thoughts about philosophical themes were sometimes really interesting. Because these good and boring passages exchange I would give the book two stars. **
Rating: Summary: REVIEW of " High Fidelity" by Nick Hornby Review: I like the book High Fidelity because it isn`t an ordinary book. Most of the books in school are very boring, but High Fidelity isn`t boring because ist describes the development of a life of a crazy young man. It is interesting for teenagers besause we also have problems with love and relationships and so on. I think that a few teenagers could understand Rob, the mail character, and his problems.
Rating: Summary: Boring Review: In conclusion I can say that Nick Hornby`s book is not the type of book I like to read. In the book there are too many moods and thoughts and nothing really happens. You could take out half of the pages and you would not have problems to understand the book. The only really funny person in the book is Barry. He made me laugh one or two times when he made jokes about people who came into the shop. The funniest scene in the book is when Ian calls Rob and Rob thinks about some possibilities what he could say to Ian. I think that this book is for women because it has no plot but lots of "grease", thoughts and moods as in Titanic. I would say to every man who wants to read the book: "Leave it".
Rating: Summary: the most boring book I ever read Review: The book about Rob Fleming is, in my opinion, bad. There isn't really a plot. Rob is only thinking or speaking about his girls. He's only talking about love and sex and which of his girls was the best. For every thing Rob makes a top 5 list. He's a bit like a psycho. Because of this it is not easy to like this book with these strange characters.
