Rating: Summary: Great read! Review: This is the first book that I read by this author. Great description. Great ability to draw me in and get me drunk on rhythm and flow of words. Loved the characters and the plot was good. Just a great read. I've already read it twice.
Rating: Summary: Great Read Review: A story about two lost romantic hopefuls looking for love, but too stubborn to cherish it when they finally find it. Vincent and Dana the focus of this novel, are in many ways the same yet still very different. Vincent's character is portrayed as a strong, intelligent, and handsome black man, yet still doesn't come off as being cocky. Somewhat reserved-he doesn't give you all of him therefore making him a little mysterious and leaves you wanting to know more about him. Vincent was able to catch Dana's eye with his charming ways.
Where as Vincent is more reserved, Dana complements him by being more assertive. Vincent takes the time to analyze things; Dana on the other hand, acts off impulse. They're strong, intelligent, attractive and African American, but this isn't the only common ground they share.
They've both been in, and just got out of good relationships gone bad. Whoever said you couldn't find love in a club? That's where the two met. A little hesitant about jumping in head first into things, they were finally able to take a risk and make things official. Unfortunately neither one was completely honest about they're past and when the truth finally comes out it shakes their whole foundation and makes them both question their relationship as a whole.
Overall Eric Jerome Dickey did a good job in making a story that would capture an audience's attention and kept you hanging on every word wondering what would happen next. A story people could relate to. Last but not least, the thing I enjoyed most about this book was the fact that it was raw-more or less it was just real.
The author was able to capture the audience's attention by setting the scene an introducing the characters. He gave a description of their physical characteristics while mentioning very little of their past, leaving me personally wondering what they were really about and what each of their intentions were. For example when Vince was first introduced and met Dana, they had a conversation where his past was questioned and when confronted, he denied it all. But later the truth comes to light and I was very much surprised by the outcome of their situation and all the lies that ended up coming out.
The very situations that Dana and Vince went through in this novel are very much like the situations that everyday people face. Situations from, taking a chance in falling in love, to lying about your past in order to maintain innocence with your future, or trying to decide who to put first- your relationship or your children.
No matter the situation Eric Jerome Dickey was able to capture and portray the raw and very much real essence of the scene.
"Somebody had to pay. I held Dana down with one hand on her neck, my pants down at my knees...tried to force my way inside her. She slapped me, shifted side to side to buck me off. Then I stopped."
His explicit and bold writing style really takes it there. Overall the book was a great read, a book I enjoyed reading from beginning to end.
