Summary: Al Gore is his own worst enemy
Review: Seriously, this guy comes out with his ridiculous speeches, tried to steal the last election (but was defeated thank God) and now wants to talk about values???? C'mon. I guess Bill Clinton's book on moral values and strong fidelity comes out next right?I flipped through the book at our book store. There were plenty of copies. No big rush from anyone to buy it.Al, you did it to yourself guy.

Summary: Confusing, very dissorganized
Review: This book jumps around so much that I feel that I am playing hopscotch. It's a classic case of throw some spaghetti against the way and hopefully some of it will stick. Gore seems to be desperately trying to grab at anythingto get the readers hooked...but alas, Gore fails terribly.

Summary: Very helpful insight
Review: ...P>I found the book very heartwarming and insightful. I enjoyed reading Al and Tipper's insights into the changing life of the American Family.

Summary: Gore's excellent work presenting the American Family!
Review: As a student of family history and not necessarily of political correctness or attitude, I find this book an excellent peek into the evolving American family. Knowing how past generations of my own family have lived, I see many aspects of these changes reflected in this book. The American Family is varied from house to house like never before and no book could possibly illustrate everyone's situation but this book does visit many family situations in depth and explores for us the experiences that led them to where they are today and shows us their dreams for tomorrow.

I recommend this book for anyone with an interest in American and/or Family history. Also, the companion photo book is irresistible to anyone sitting in our living room.

Summary: Very Good (From A Person Who Actually Read It)
Review: ...I actually read it and must say that I loved it. Al and Tipper examines the role of the American family in depth and examines the changes the 'typical' family has gone through.

Add to this almost sociological report the fact that the Gore's give the reader some personal, and indeed poignant, examples from their own lives (as if treating what they have learned in an scientific form, and giving examples from the family lives that they personally knew best).

The one thing that kind of shocked (positively) me was that while it states that America should help out the American family anyway that it could, clear recommendations for governmental action aren't there.

Summary: An amazing achievement, Al Gore has done it again!
Review: This book warms the soul, entertains the mind, and lifts the spirit. Al and Tipper Gore interview several families around America-each one interesting in its own way. The stories are fascinating, and the commentary by Al and Tipper is exceptional. I will buy this book for my family, and recommend it to every person I know.

If you appreciate high quality non fiction, and are interested in the changes occuring in American society, buy this book. You will look forward to reading it again each time you set it down.

Summary: Gores again the first to take on a big problem
Review: Al and Tipper Gore explore the changes in American families and the adjustments society is making to them. They don't stick just to the numbers, but punctuate their points with personal accounts from their own family and with interviews from several families they profiled. While they don't make policy prescriptions, they make the problems that need to be addressed clear. This is a factual yet moving account of the changing American family. I loved it!

Summary: Complete Look at American Family
Review: Al and Tipper Gore have written a book that shows the changing face of American family though insightful analysis of the many different ways a family can form and survive. The various economic, social, as well as legislative forces that affect modern American life are described in this book in a way that does not just show how American families are changing, but also why. This is not a political call to arms that I was expecting from the former Second Family, and that is refreshing.

Summary: Joyful and inspiring
Review: This heartwarming collection of stories and reflections takes the reader through the joys, hardships and emotional struggles of family life in the twenty-first century. The book examines the metamorphosis of the American family over the last few decades and validates the notion that there is more than one kind of family and that the emotional bonds between people transcend the classic definition of the nuclear family or the socioeconomic hardships of today's world.

The writing tone changes from serious to playful as it examines the lives of ordinary people who make up 12 extraordinary families. Joined at the Heart intertwines these profiles with touching personal anecdotes as well as quotes from literature, opinions from psychologists, and advice from educators and academics. In this sense the book is as untraditional in its style as the families it portrays. But then again, it is not written by a psychologist or professional writer, but by a political couple who for the duration of this project abandoned politics and focused on what's nearest and dearest to their own hearts: the family.

The book addresses the wide range of concerns that are key to a healthy family life, while also providing the reader with insight into the lives of the tight-knit Gore family. The result is a compelling, unusual, but always inspiring volume, a personal reflection on the bonds that make families of any kind become and stay joined at the heart.

Summary: The New American Family
Review: With all the tired blah-blah-blah about "family," this book could've easily been a real drag to wade through. Norman Rockwell is dead, the 1950s are long gone. Joined at the heart? Most families I know hardly have time to sit down to a meal, let alone "join at the heart." But what a breath of fresh air this book turned out to be. Instead of the usual mushy wad of platitude, it's an interesting, thoughtful, and readable examination of the new American family, which, as we all know, has been altered so radically in recent decades. I learned much, not only from the Gores' in-depth interviews with a number of diverse families, but also from their insights regarding social and technological shifts that have influenced our definitions of "family." Surprisingly, as a result of reading the book, I've had new insights about my own family of origin, as well as about the marriage I've chosen to create as an adult. (I also have a copy of the photography book, which isn't the usual smarmy Hallmark-card vision, but a genuinely touching collection of portraits by a number of photographers.) .... This book is just ... good and, boy, is it needed. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title
