Summary: IT's LIKE REAL LIFE PROBLEMS!
Review: THE CAT ATE MY GYMSUIT By Paula Danziger

I had just read this book a year ago, when I was in seventh grade. I really liked "The Cat ate my Gymsuit". I thought it dealt with a lot of real life problems that most teenagers deal with. It was about a girl in seventh grade named Marcy, who was overweight, had a lot of acne, and had barely any friends. In gym class she made up excuses why she couldn't play gym, because she didn't want to change in front of everyone else, because she thought she was fat. She also hated her dad because he always made fun of her, and makes her mom cry. Until one day at school, their class had a new teacher who turned Marcy's life around. But the other teachers didn't like her teaching method and try to fire her. The students try to fight to save her. This was a really good book. I would read it again if I could. I would also recommend this book to be in classrooms everywhere!

Review: I have recently been going back and reading some of my favorite books from when I was young. I enjoyed this book as much if not more this reading and I am 33 now! I highly recommend reading this book for a nice escape into the life of 13 year old in the 70's. (The original printing is what I recommend, the description above sounds like they may have updated the book and that as far as I am concerned would ruin the whole point of it. Find an old copy!)

Summary: Well Done, Paula
Review: Marcy Lewis hates school and her father is very strict and mean. Marcy is also very fat and wishes she was very thin. Then she gets a new English teacher named Ms. Finley. She is willing to do anything with her students. Next, Ms. Finley gets fired. After that, Marcy's best friend [Nancy] has a party. Joel asks Marcy out to Nancy's party. I think I told you too much about the book, so go get your wallet and buy this book!

Summary: GOOD BUT NOT GREAT
Review: I bought this book because it's a part of Puffin's Modern Classic for Children. I thought this would introduce me to outstanding literary titles for kids. I was a bit disappointed by what I've read; or maybe YA/ Children's Literature in the U.S. have developed rapidly (this book was originally published in the `80s). 1. The characters are not fully developed esp. the main character and her father; 2. the concern of the kid like pimples and obesity are not exactly original and new these days; 3. im disappointed by political stand of the English teacher in the story (it left me hanging; im not satisfied with her decision to resign after the kids lobby for her reinstatement); 4. the roles of the protagonist's family are stereotypical; 5. the 'romance' substory is not really promising and not cute either (they are so uptight!); 6. the whole storyline is not original or maybe, maybe, this is the pioneering novel using obesity, self-esteem, mentor-student relationship, (verbally) abusive father as topics. Read the book itself--it took me only half of the day to finish. It's readable but i kept asking for more.

Review: Title:The Cat ate my gumsuit

Period P.1

The cat the ate my gumsuit was a very interesting and fun book. It is about this girl name Marcy Lewis that thinks she is a blimp and has many problems in her life. Her favorite teacher Ms. Finney get fired, and she is having a lot of problems at her house with her father. In the story, Marcy find a a new friend that she never thought she was going to have. A guy that she likes named Joel. Marcy for once in her life speaks for what she believes in and stand up for what she thinks is right. While doing all of this she also finds herself to be less like a blimp and more like a helium balloon.
The reason that I liked this book was because it showed me how standing up for yourself is better than letting your favorite teacher not get justice. Another reason I liked this book is because the author decribed very well the way Marcy felt when she was sad at home and the way she felt when she was at school with her friends. When she was in the office at school with her mom , her mom asked, "Marcy, do you belive in what you are doing?" and Marcy answers, "Yes, I do." Later on she goes on to say, "Mom I've spent thirteen years worrying about what father is going to say, and I've never been happy. So now I've got to do things I that I think are right." those words touch me.
One of my dislikes about this book, and that was that she would always get yelled at by her father. At the beggining of the book it starts off by saying I hate my father. And at the end of the book it says I still hate my father....
My favorite part of this book is when Joel is walking Marcy home from a party and Marcy thinks that she is going to get her first really kiss from a guy. But what happens instead was that she got a peck on the forehead. My other dislike was that when Marcy and Joel went over a friends house name Nancy that she allowed beer in the house with no adults. I think that that was not being responsibile.
