Rating: Summary: good historical detail, bad writing Review: I can't believe so many people loved this book. the subject matter is interesting & I thought the historical detail was done well, but most of the characters are completely one-dimensional - either very, very good or impossibly evil. and daniel was really annoying after awhile - so sensitive, great lover, great warrior, great body - totally unbelievable. does this author really teach creative writing?
Rating: Summary: YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK! Review: This book was so good I cannot wait for the sequel! You really feel like you are Elizabeth and you fall in love with Nathaniel! This is just a great book!
Rating: Summary: The most romantic and well written novel I have ever read Review: This tale of love beyond all barriers, the love that binds Nathaniel and Elizabeth together, is an incredible and complex story which you become a part of. I felt as if I was Elizabeth and I can't wait for the sequel, Dawn On A Distant Shore. I wish that Sara Donati could keep writing about Nathaniel and Elizabeth's lives forever. You won't be able to put this book down. I have read it twice and if the sequel does not come out soon Iwill probably read it again. I will never tire of this wonderful and enthralling novel and I don't think I could find another book either like it or nearly as good and well written.
Rating: Summary: They don't come much better than this! Review: I lack just a few dozen pages of being finished with this book, but was compelled to go ahead and write. I found that from page one I was along with Elizabeth on her journey on her new life. Ms. Donati's vivid writing style made it almost impossible not to "see" each character and setting as clearly as if it were in front of you. Even though the book is a long one, the pages fly by and you are tossed between hurrying along to see what will happen next, and rationing each page so that the story won't end. Ms. Donati's characters are so real, you feel like you are watching what is happening to them, not reading about them. My only concern is that she won't be able to top this book with her sequel!
Rating: Summary: A retelling of THE PIONEERS Review: Cooper wrote a series of Leatherstocking stories, one of which was THE PIONEERS. This books is an attempt to retell that story, not LAST OF THE MOHICANS. THE PIONEERS was way ahead of its time in that it dealt with environmental themes, something this book does as well. This story is not set in wartime, but in the aftermath of war which is not as loud, maybe, but has just as much human drama. Maybe more. If you're not dodging bullets you have to deal more closely with the people around you. The characters in this story really stayed with me, I even dreamed about them. (And not just Nathaniel, either).
Rating: Summary: Confusing and unrateable -- at best. Review: It seems that either people love it or they hate it. I think I'm one of those rare people who just can't rate this book at all. First, I'm confused as to if this is a romance novel, a glorified piece of fan fiction, or a historical novel. It has the romance element, however it continually insists that it is historical fiction. But sometimes, the writing implys fanfic. So, who's to say? I've heard that it is a continuation of sorts to The Last of the Mohicans, which is far and away one of my most favorite movies. I wish the author would have changed Nathaniel's name. It links back to the movie too directly, making you stumble and forget who the real Nathaniel is -- Hawkeye or this son?People have complained about the romance and/or the stereotypical actions of the idiotic villagers. Well, that didn't really bother me. In fact, I don't know what bothered me about this book. It could be that it is a below standard sequel to an exciting movie. The book lacks excitement. What it can offer is romance and controlled action -- both can not stand up to the original tale. The setting of a post-revolution America is different, but, as I've said, the only tension generated through the people is weak at best. If it had been set during the revolution it might have had a better chance at not being thrown into the romance category. The contents in this book didn't make me think of Elizabeth and Nathaniel. It made me think of the movie, and how the story of Hawkeye and Cora was so much more intense. That's a good indicator that the sequel could hardly reach the level of the movie. The Last of the Mohicans is a great movie (the original book is completely different -- and little references from Into the Wilderness suggest that the movie was the inspiration for this sequel, not the book). Into the Wilderness may have been a place where you can "leave your footprints in the snow," but who is to say that your time there was that thrilling? In the end, there was no real climax, no real excitement, and all it left behind for me was an empty shell of a potentially good story. Plus the promise of another vast, reaching tale of emptiness in its own sequel. I suppose sometimes one expects something fabulous out of a good original's sequel when all you can really expect is normalcy.
Rating: Summary: Loved it! Review: This book was wonderful! A great opportunity to curl up on the sofa and relax. This is the kind of book that pulls you in and doesn't let go until you've finished. The laundry will pile up, and dust bunnies may appear, but don't worry about all that for a while. This book is well worth your time!
Rating: Summary: Absolutely wonderful Review: I simply picked up this book because of the cover and i am so glad I did. What a wonderful book, I absolutely fell in love with the characters and the plot. As another reader mentioned, I also found myself thinking about the Bonners when away from the book. Can't wait for the next one. Great job Sara, keep them coming, love your style!
Rating: Summary: Into the Wilderness Review: Venturing into this book was like venturing into the wilderness that Sara Donati masterfully created on her canvas of the written page. I found myself thinking of Elizabeth and Nathaniel during the daytime hours when I was away from the book. I didn't want this book to end. It is with great anticipation and excitement that I await the continuing saga of the Bonners.
Rating: Summary: Breathtaking Review: Into the Wilderness was an incredible noval. Once you have entered into the authors world you wish you could really live there. The reader is left longing for a life as a Native American. The characters are strong and colorfuly protrade. Where the women are as strong in character and courage as the men, and the adventures never cease. It touches something in the soul. I'm restlessly waiting for the sequel.
