Summary: Great Historical Romance/Drama combined with some adventure.
Review: "Into The Wilderness" is a fine book for those of us who enjoy romance novels set in the past - this being in the 1700's Hudson Valley Region of New York State. The main character, Elizabeth Middleton, a mature woman in her late 20's is a strong, innocent and admirable figure. After coming over to America from England to settle in to her father's home in upstate New York to teach school, she quickly falls in love with a rugged, but gentle and intelligent "wilderness man" Nathaniel Bonner, brought up in the Iroquois Indian tradition. But another man Dr. Richaard Todd, has his eyes set on her - but only to gain her dowry (a mountain with much sentimental meaning for him as well as a fabled silver mine). Elizabeth elopes with Nathaniel to everyone's surprise and to secure the mountain for themselves. When they go into hiding from the pursuing Dr. Todd, the adventure begins in the Adirondack wilderness - which certainly tests Elizabeth's mettle. She faces all her obstacles with courage and bravery - even while alone in the forest and fighting for her life against an evil backwoodsman. This book has many memorable characters, Elizabeth's brother Julian, an insecure, gambling, immature man with no direction in life, Robby MacLaughlan, a Scottsman loner who is the salt of the earth and Curiosity - the black housekeeper/midwife working in Elizabeth's father's home who secretly runs the house and knows much more about the townspeople than she lets on.

I liked this book because of the blending of the different cultures, the European settlers, the freed black slaves and the Native Americans all living in a harsh new country together and depending on each other for help when needed. Try "Into The Wilderness" if you like strong female lead characters and lots of romance (and some sexy parts) set in a new awakening country and the brave adventurers who dared to discover its excitement and beauty.

Summary: good effort, good descript.,poor plot, poor characterization
Review: Things I liked: 1. Description of nature, I felt as though I really were there. Those who appreciate these things will definitely appreciate this book. 2. The grits and determination it takes to even attempt a historical novel. Bravo to those who can do it. It keeps readers like me entertained. 3. The 20th century Elizabeth who rules the roost. WINK -not typical for those times, but it's only fiction.

Things I didn't like: 1. The storyline (not terribly engaging) 2. The characters lacked depth and humanity. They ranged from stock characters "Julian" and "Richard" to near perfect protagonist "Nathaniel" and "Robbie" 3. The constant description of nature. Some of those description could have been better used in developing the characters, refining them, breathing life into them.

Summary: one word awesome. Elizabeth and Nathanial are wonderful.
Review: This is the best book I have read since Outlander. I rate Sarah Donati right up there with Diana Gabaldon.

Summary: Really enjoyed this book. . .
Review: I really enjoyed this book. Who wouldn't fall for Nathaniel. My only problem was the ending. I mean come on . . . An Earl? If anyone in England at that time had news of a raid killing mother and father and no child found they would give up hope. Especially after 40 or 50 years. I found this hard to swallow.

Summary: great read
Review: I just finished reading Into the Wilderness and must say I really enjoyed it. Though the book is long 800+ pages it reads very quickly just by keeping you engrossed. Even though I was personally swayed by Diana Gabaldon`s recommendation on the cover don't expect to find anything similar between their writing styles. Summary= Great read!! Will be watching out for the sequel.

Summary: The Best Book I've Ever Read!
Review: Couldn't stop reading it. Can't wait 'till March when the next one comes out.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Loved the story
Review: I really enjoyed reading this book. I hated to put it down! I did not like the detailed love scenes. Is this a must in every love story? Also, I like a sequel, but I don't enjoy having to read the next book to have questions answered. Other than that, I liked the characters, and the story line.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Lovers of long, intense novels, take heart!
Review: I know different people get different things from the books they read, but I honestly don't understand how any lover of romantic fiction could dislike this book. True, it's formulaic, but I don't mind a formula if the writing is good, and Donati is very good. She could often bring tears to my eyes, and was just as effective in helping me to see the great wilderness that much of the novel was set in.

From the beginning, I found myself comparing it to Gabaldon's series (probably because of her recommendation on the cover), which could have been very unfair as I think her books are among the best historical fiction I've ever read. But I must say _Into the Wilderness_ comes out well by comparison. I ended up caring as much about Elizabeth and her Nathaniel as I did about Claire and her Jamie, and that says a lot. Sometimes I did feel that Elizabeth and Claire were a lot alike - perhaps almost too much - but I do so enjoy a strong woman character. Elizabeth is definitely "writ large," but I'm glad when I run across a heroic female character for a change who takes her destiny in her own hands.

Since I could not put it down from the time I began reading it, I enthusiastically recommend this novel and I eagerly look forward to the sequel!
