Rating: Summary: Che 101 Review: I have read many works on Che and this one is my favorite. It covers Che's life from begining to end. The author dedicated years of his life to researching Che and even moved his family to Cuba to write the book. If you seriously want to learn about Che's life and what he believed in this book is a must read. "A Revolutionary Life" could be a textbook for Che 101.
Rating: Summary: Che lives Review: An extremely well researched and written book.
Rating: Summary: Che Guevara - A Revolutionary Life Review: Well, I've almost finished reading this engrossing book. As a result feel that I know more about Che than anything else I've read, heard or seen of him.I found myself drawing some inevitable comparisons between Che and Ho Chih Minh. After reading Mike McLear's book "Vietnam - 10,000 Day War" and since reading yours I tried to imagine how each of these formative characters would've dealt with each other in person. Knowing what Che was like I think he would've viewed Uncle Ho as being a bit of a fence sitter in the early stages. But later, when the Vietnam War was in full swing, Che would've been enamoured of the determination of Ho and his people in their struggle. Ho was really a Nationalist with more in common with Fidel who played the real politik game with finese! While Che was the uncompromising communist. Che's version of Communism was far more ideal than those of the Soviets or the Chinese. The feeling I got about Che near the end was that he was feeling increasingly isolated in his views - how fickle politics can be! Even his realationships with Fidel and Raul began the change - maybe they viewed him as a bit of a liability. Still I would've loved to have been a fly on the wall to see how Che and Ho dealt with each other. While there's mention of Cuba's verbal support of Vietnam - I would've thought that it was a great opportunity for Che's expanding guerella network to be exported to Vietnam. But I suppose, given Fidel's political juggling act, that playing that type of card would've caused more problems with the US - resulting in more severe measures by it and its' agencies. In the end I admired Che - a driven, principled man - but one who still had his faults. Wonder what Che would think of the world today - with the breaking down of the iron and bamboo curtains, and the demise of global communism? Maybe he would've mellowed with age - who knows?
Rating: Summary: Journey with Che through his life Review: I started this book on a Sunday morning and was so enthralled, so enraptured in the story, in the author's telling of the story, in the life of this incredible man, that i could not sleep that night and finished the book on Monday. The book is very impressionant, presenting a journey throught the life of Che, inviting the reader to journey next to this man. I was slightly suprised at the amount of background info, exterior to Che's life, but I guess that was necessary to set the story, so to say, so that the reader unfamiliar with the historical events could gain a better understanding of the influences on Che.
Rating: Summary: Very descriptive in all senses, a radiography of Che mind Review: Anderson here give us an incredible description of everything in Che Guevara's life. His relationships, his personality, his actions, his victories and defeats... all with great richness and clarity. Also, I think, is a very objective radiography of Che Guevara. Personally I admire him with all my heart because of his freedom (even in his trapped in Marxism mind) in a terribly cinic world. Before this book, I knew nothing about Che, and in my country the "propaganda" about marxism was bad... Personally, I think that Che utopic ideals are noble, the way to reach them is wrong... I really enjoyed reading this long book.
Rating: Summary: an amazing history of an amazing man Review: "I dont look back at what was and say 'why', but i look at what wasn't and say 'why not"-John F. Kennedy. True, these were not words by or about Che, but they explain who he was well. Although he did not accomplish much, the one thing that Che did was leave an image in the minds of all the world's oppressed people. This book gives a good view of the man and the revolutions. I knew next to nothing about Che when before i read this book, but when I finished reading it i felt i had a good insight into the man's life. If you dont know about Che but want to, I recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: Perfect introduction for those wanting to know who "che" was Review: This book was a real page turner for me and i have gone back to read particular events that happened several times. Before you can really understand what Che had to say in the speeches/essays and other writings he produced, it is essential to understand the events of his life, especially the events that led to the conclusion of the Marxist path he took. and the best way to do that is to find an unbiased source, which, in that case, i highly recommend this biography. This book clearly explains, in great detail, the unfolding of physical events and mental decisions, often quoting lines from Che's journals, political writings and speeches. The detail of this book is so great, that, at times (such as the granma landing) you really get pulled into what's going on. mr. anderson has truly made a wonderful book. viva el che!
Rating: Summary: The BeST Book About Che Review: When one hears the word "communist" attached to the man we know as "Che," most Americans shrink from reading the book, and assume it is one that glorifies both the ideology and the man. This book is written in an unbiased fashion, and yet there will always be those who say it is pro-Che; this shows you the character of Ernesto Guevara. I read this book not really knowing who he was, and about 750 pages later, I had his famous face tatooed on my arm. To many he is an atheist's Jesus Christ, but this is detrimental to Che, he was real, and he truly gave his life for the people of the Earth. An artist, a writer, a genius, and a compassionate revolutionary, I concur wholeheartedly with Jean Paul Sartre that he was the most complete human being of our time, and suggest you read this book, it envokes the finite man eloquently.
Rating: Summary: An excellent compilation of Che's life Review: I bought this book with the purpose of learning about the life of Che Guevara. Not only did I gain knowledge of who he was, his ideals, why he was loved and abominated, and what he did for others, but I also discover the history of many other countries and their intricate relationships with Cuba. Mr. Anderson's job is extraordinary for the book is very well written and easy to follow.
Rating: Summary: ok but not good enough Review: Language was not particulary literate, but everyone should know about life of Che and this book gives a pretty good picture of that. I recommend highly this book.. Kaikkien suomalaisten pitäis varsinkin lukea tämä kirja, ja ottaa opiksi että joskus jotain voi saada aikaan tekemällä jotain, eikä ainaa vaan valittamalla.
