Summary: Truly a fasinating book on the life of Che. VIVA EL CHE!
Review: This book by Anderson provides answers for the many questions that exist about Che Guevara. Anderson's account of Che's life transfixes the reader into utopia and on the front lines with Che himself. This is a must for all Che fans and for people wishing to learn more about the greatest man to ever walk the earth.

Summary: the life of a rebel
Review: A well written book about a legendary man. The reader gets to see the truth about one of the greatest men of this century. He symbolized the need for social change in all of Latin America. He didn't do this for personal greatness, he did it to make lives better for the people of the region. In this book we can see what a complex man he really was. At times cruel, hard driving, at others kind and compassionate. Anderson does a great job weaving together all the facts and tales of Che and gives the reader the full insight of his life in this book. This book is good for anyone interested in Che Guevara, and will lead the reader to want to read more about Che and also read his works. Hasta La Victoria Siempre

Summary: A good biography
Review: This biography was incredibly detailed. Don't start it unless you can commit to finishing an 800-page, five-pound book (im only on page 500 and ive been going for months). Definitely a good choice if you want to know about Guevara, the Cuban Revolution, and the south american marxist movement.

Summary: Amazing book.
Review: An amazingly detailed acount of Che's Life. Anderson does a wonderful job of bringing Che to life. If you have the time to read the 828 pages of this book, than don't miss out on the oportunity.

Summary: Che's adventurous journey as a man intimately revealed.
Review: Over 800 pages of very minute details of one man's life. Incredibly Anderson ties everything together to make every day from Cordoba north explain the enigma of Che Guevara. I felt the author emphasized the man, not the political or revolutionary. He did not moralize on the revolution, but sought to understand and explain. Who knows, Che could have missed the boat and landed somewhere else, another Argentine youth looking for some meaning. He found it in Cuba, and the rest is history.

Summary: Long, but worth the time
Review: Everything you always wanted to know about Che but were afraid to ask! This is a truly astonishing work of research and scholarship, and my kudos to the author for presenting it in a highly readable manner.

We learn EVERYTHING about the dashing Argentinean guerrilla! We see Che grow as an asthmatic child in Argentina, hear the bullets as an asthmatic Che becomes a fearless guerrillero in the Cuban revolution and finally discover how he was executed in the high plains of Bolivia.

A bit idealistic at times, we nonetheless learn about a young Che's darker side, including some vicious anti-black remarks when he first comes across blacks in one of his South American treks.

This is the bible on Che Guevara.

Summary: Well-researched and balanced
Review: The amount of information in this book is truly astonishing! With an extensive discussion of Latin American politics in the 50's and 60's, Anderson puts Che in the correct historical perspective, while clearly and objectively assessing his subject's personal strengths and faults. A long book, and well worth the effort. Engagingly written and full of astute political and military analysis, Anderson has written one of the best biographies I've ever read.

Summary: Troublemaker
Review: First off, the recipes in this book are no bueno -- the Colonel makes chicken better than this, and that ain't saying much. Second, Che is still riding Fidel's coattails. Che was the Ethel to Castro's Lucy Ball.... Maybe smarter, but lacking in kooky charm... that we can feel superior yet protective toward. Che is boring, and his words seem antiquated today. 800 pages is way too much, for someone so unfunny... and an elite background at that... save the drama for your mama ,Che!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Balanced and thorough
Review: This is a very even-handed and thorough look at Che Guevara's life. As an anti-communist Cuban-American, I approached this book with skepticism, but ultimately thought it to be sound. John Lee Anderson is obviously sympathetic to Che, but how can you expect a biographer not to be. Additionally, I suspect that such sympathy is what allowed him access to previously unreleased documents held by the Cuban Council of State, as well as Che's widow. Anderson doesn't squander the opportunity and produces a scrupulous, yet eminently readable account. If you are looking to learn more about the Che--the good and the bad--this is undoubtedly where start.

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: Military Minutiae
Review: "A Revolutionary Life" is expertly researched, but unfortunately spends more time (tons, actually) on Che's daily military maneuvres than on his political philosophies and relationships.

Tedious.
