Rating: Summary: A favorite baby gift! Review: What an extraordinary pleasure to find all of the timeless favorite children's stories, complete with their original illustrations under one cover. I can't think of a better gift to give a young child, to be enjoyed by child AND parents for years to come!
Rating: Summary: A useful book for any teacher just starting out Review: As a college student at IUPUI, I had to use this book for my trade books class. I found that this book had many stories that would be useful in the classroom. I will also keep this book to read to my children in the future. It is a perfect addition to anyones library. There are a lot of children's favorites in this book.
Rating: Summary: Good stories Review: The stories in this collection are excellent. From the hilarious Amelia Bedilia, Where the Wild Things Are and Curious George, to Frog and Toad, the collection samples the best in kids litterature. Each of the story is conveniently marked for the appropriate age group. However, the stories for each age group are not into a separate section, which makes it a little hard for parents to skip through pages of stories for 8 year olds and infants to get to a toddler story for instance.
Rating: Summary: If you buy only one children's book... Review: Well, that's silly! You probably are going to buy more than one children's book. But the truth is, even if you own some of these books on their own already, this collection is a great "take-along library," perfect for travel or curling up on the sofa. Though the stories lose a little in the full-page format (stories like "Chicka-Chicka Boom-Boom" are really meant to be read a page at a time, and the built-in "suspense" suffers somewhat by seeing the pages all together), the book's comprehensiveness definitely makes up for it, as does its quality. This book is amazingly well-bound and will stand up to a surprising amount of wear and tear. We've had ours for two years now, and even with some fraying around the edges, I've been pleasantly surprised at how durable this jumbo paperback has been. Even more surprising, the kids keep pulling it off the shelf long after newer books have lost their appeal. They can always find new and old stories: Madeline, the Tub People, Curious George... they're all here, and more. For the old favourites you've always loved and the new ones you'll wish you had as a kid, this book makes a timeless addition to any children's library.
Rating: Summary: Excellent book for reading Review: I thought about this many times because it is not cheap. However, when I got hold of this book, it is worth the value. My daughter, age 4, loves this book. The author has made our life easier by marking on every chapter, which level of the kids is suitable for that chapter. I think this is a great job. It is an excellent book to carry this around instead of carrying many books when I travel with my kid. This is highly recommended to the parents who want to share the stories to kid.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely amazing collections of children's favorites Review: Most of the 'greatest hits' collections - whether for a time period or a particular artist seem to always leave out the best song or super-star groups. This Treasury astounded me by collecting 'all' the great authors and stories (at least all of the ones I can thing of). Madeline, Dr. Seuss, Babar, Curious George, Where the Wild Things Are, The Berenstain Bears, Amelia Bedelia, Stellaluna, Pooh, etc... I am amazed that the editors managed to get the rights to publish all of these incredible favorites! The texts of the stories are complete (as far as I can tell), but the illustration have been shrunk so that all of the stories will fit in one volume. Something is lost in the process, but I can imagine that it would be the perfect book for a trip, keeping a any kids' home-away-from-home (like grandma's house), or just to read to discover previously unknown classics (which is what my five year old and I are doing). An added benefit is the history - the stories were all written in a historical context and to a greater or lesser extend reflect the society in which they were written. The editors wisely put the year of publication with each story. So when I read them to my daughter I can also comment (when applicable) not only about whether or not I had read the story as a kid, but also set the story in a historical context (take Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel, published in 1939, for example). Of course, for stories destined to become favorites, the full-sized editions with illustrations are really needed; but for an anthology, this book cannot be beat!
Rating: Summary: The Best Ever Collection of Children's Stories Review: This magical, wonderful storybook has over 40 classic children's stories Guess How Much I Love You (my favorite) Curious George A Chair for My Mother (my second favorite) Stella Luna Amelia Bedelia the Berenstain Bears Goodnight Moon the Stinky Cheese Man Babar Madeline In Which Pooh Goes Visiting Where the Wild Things Are The Story of Ferdinand Language skills form the base of all cognitive development. These skills, or lack of them, make or break a child's future. I try to get a few of these at a time to give to young mothers. I want to gradually get copies into the local shelters, community centers, Girls' and Boys' Clubs, and so on. This book includes wonderful stories from many different cultures. Let's change the world by empowering a child's mind.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful for trips Review: This is a really great collection. I've found we use it the most on trips. My kids always wanted to take a ton of books to read. Now I just take this book and we have all their favorites with us. We lost our first copy and I had to order another copy as soon as we returned home.
Rating: Summary: What a Treasure! Review: My six year old daughter loves the stories in this book of collective stories. She is even able to read many of them by herself. What I like the most about this book is that it includes a majority of stories I have never read before and I found this to be extremely refreshing. My favorite story is a sing-songy story about the alphabet called "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom". My daughter's favorite is "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day". I purchased this book to take on vacation with us since it is filled with so many stories...and my daughter, Keri, was used to having two stories read to her every night at bedtime. I was so thankful to have the book...it provided so much entertainment every night on vacation and since! The illustrations are plentiful and wonderful. However, since it is a collective of many books it was not possible to include all of the original illustrations from each story. If you only buy one book of collective stories...this is definately the one to own!
Rating: Summary: Not quite what I remember... Review: While I agree with the other reviews about the quality of the books chosen for this compendium, I have been a bit disappointed with it in that many of the books have been edited substantially with regards to the illustrations. Also, it's not quite the same when you see many pages of the book printed small on one page. So, while I don't regret buying it, I've found my childhood memories somewhat truncated in it. Especially with the Story of Babaar- I miss seeing the pictures!
