Summary: This book is a must-have!
Review: This is an absolutely wonderful book. I have 3 young children (ages 2-6)and this book is a favorite. We keep it at our bedside for storytime. It has stories for every reading level. You will probably remember many of them from your own childhood. What a collection, all together in a beautiful hardcover book!

Summary: wonderful, high quality book
Review: We really love this book. It not only has clear and beautiful pictures, but also is a high quality book. It collects various stories which fit different age babies. My baby is 11 months old, she likes these bright color very much and loves to touch the book and tries to turn the pages. We read the stories for her everyday. When we are reading the stories, she is always around us and tries to figure out what the words are.

Summary: A wonderful collection
Review: This is the best single-volume collection of children's picture book stories I have seen. My children had many of the stories in softcover editions and most of these translate well in the format of this collection. Others were entirely new to us. Many truly classic children's stories are in this book and most of the best children's picture book authors are represented. The book is versatile: you can take this one volume on a trip and not need any other story book for your preschooler. The only drawback is that in some instances, not all of the illustrations for a particular story are included or the illustrations are much smaller than in the original book. However, the quality of the printing and paper is excellent, so this is not a distraction. My 4-year-old pulls this book off of the shelf every night.

Summary: Fabulous Children's Book
Review: All the classics and then some! What a terrific book for a family with young readers and soon-to-be readers.

Summary: Best bang for your buck!
Review: If your goal is to bring joy to your children through the reading of fantastic stories, this book will give you the most bang for your buck. If you have unlimited money, by all means go out and buy these books separately so you get the full-sized and complete illustrations. Whichever path you choose, these stories are too wonderful not to have for your children.

Summary: A crime against children's literature
Review: If you believe USA Today is a great newspaper, People is a great magazine and McDonald's is a great restaurant, this is the book for you. Or perhaps Reader's Digest is more analogous. The integrity of many great works of children's literature is destroyed by cutting them up and editing them as in this "treasury." The world moves too fast as it is, and taking the time to snuggle up with the complete versions of these books is one of the great gifts we can give our children and ourselves. It is a tragedy that thousands of children will miss out on that experience while ingesting this "fast read," "fast look" version.

Summary: Excellent collection of the best loved children's stories!!!
Review: This book is a must have!! It will expose your child to some of the best children's literature written in the 20th century for a relatively small monetary investment!! Use the book as a guide - read the stories - fall in love with them - then buy your own copy or borrow it from the library so you can enjoy all the illustrations on full pages!!! My 5 year old son can discuss almost every story in the book because he's had access to a lot of children's literature in one place!!!

Summary: A great book to share with children
Review: I throughly enjoy this collection of children's literature. I am a children's librarian, and love to cuddle up with my children and read one of the stories.

While I agree that some illustrations have been cut or reduced, the overall intent of the book is to give a sense of the wonderful stories and fantastic illustrations that exist in children's literature. My family and I tend to look in the local public library for the stories we have enjoyed, and see all the illustrations.

A very good overview of picture books.

Summary: What have you done?!?!
Review: The twentieth century has produced some brilliant picture books, and the editor of this collection has selected well. However, . . . in the best picture books the text and the pictures truly synergize. Stripping many, many of the pictures away from the text destroys many of these classic books. Shame, Shame on you. Clearly this was conceived and executed as a money making gimmick, with little regard for the art of children's literature.

Summary: Great overview
Review: This is a great anthology of children's literature. Although some people have mentioned that artwork is lacking, there is a mention in the introduction that if your child becomes very attached to a particular story, you could purchase a separate copy of it for ease of carrying. You also could consider purchasing a separate copy if you wanted to see the full artwork.

I thought this book was a great overview because you could read the stories (with reading level indicated by a color-coded book) and decide for yourself if it was worth spending more money on individual copies. I like owning a copy because it has replaced many of my long-gone paperbacks from my childhood. Those paperbacks were made to be read, which means their longevity is limited. But this hardcover collection of some of my childhood favorites will (hopefully) hold up much longer.

So, I would buy it as an introduction to children's literature, and let your child browse and see what s/he likes. Then you can purchase separate copies later on.
