Rating: Summary: A classic tale of self esteem Review: This is a great book for teaching children and even some adults about not giving up. Sure it's predicatble to some. But for those who haven't become jaded once they became adults, this is a cool book. The colours are vibrant and the text is just right for getting the message across. And when you consider how much money some adults pay for conferences that are meant to teach one to not give up and to not allow others to tell you that you cannot attain your goals and dreams, seems this book does the same thing and for less ... dollars.
Rating: Summary: Make sure you get the original illustrations Review: This is a great book, but make sure you get the original illustrations. The illustrations by Phil A. Smouse (isbn 1577480813) are insipid, a big contrast to the original illustrations (by George and Doris Hauman) which are charming. The version I have is isbn 0448405202 but it appears that other versions probably also have the originals.
Rating: Summary: very enjoyable no matter your age Review: This is a very good book. This teaches perseverance to young children and is also just fun to read. When I got this book as a child I liked it a lot and as i got older and read it again I saw that is was also well written.
Rating: Summary: review Review: This is about a train full of toys and good things to eat. They are traveling to get to a town full of good girls and boys and the engine on the train they are in breaks down. They need to get there so when an engine passes they ask if it will help them. They make up reasons why they can't do it like they don't have time to help and things like that. Then a little engine comes along and is willing to help them out. Nobody thinks this engine can pull the train over the mountain because it is too little but the engine believes he can and tries to do it anyway. The engine starts to pull the train and keeps saying "I think I can, I think I can", ... This is a great book for children. It teaches them they can do whatever they put their minds too. The little engine did not give up just because no one thought he could pull the train over the mountain. He kept going ... people can do anything if they believe in themselves.
Rating: Summary: So cute Review: This is my favorite book! My son likes it too. The windup train stays on the track amazingly well.
Rating: Summary: Abridged edition Review: This is one of the great children's stories of all time. I loved it as a child and read it over and over again, and my son has been demanding it as a bedtime story regularly since he was2-1/2 years old. The 1991 Platt & Munk (a division of Grosset & Dunlap) edition, beautifully illustrated by Cristina Ong, leaves out all the requests made to the busy trains. The story is now very brief (which is why I give it only 3 stars instead of the 5 the full-length version deserves)--I suppose because it is a board book--but the essentials are all there. It also changes the sex of the engines from male to female, so perhaps some parents would like to read this edition to their children as well as one of the others.
Rating: Summary: One of the most important messages of life Review: This little book with its beautiful picture of ' The Little Engine that Could' was a favorite. I read it many times to my children . The message of not giving up, of taking on something which the odds are against and are unlikely, of doing what is hard and to some seems impossible, of persisting and persisting until one does climb the mountain is one I think important for all of us in life. As I remember this book I think of my children and pray to G-d for their well being .And that they too will know in the words of their grandfather that lesson " When the going gets tough, the tough get going"
A beautiful little book which brought us many moments of happiness.
Rating: Summary: The Little Engine that Could Review: This story is a childrens classic. A wonderful tale about a little helpful train that overcomes great physical adversity through sheer will power. A great moral teaching story for young impressionable children. This story teaches our children especially our daughters that they too can be successful if they work hard and think positive. This is a story I'll read to my daughter many times. The little engine represent a positive female role model without flaunting its femininity. In fact I had forgotten the engine was female until I read it again recently. A great story worth checking out.
Rating: Summary: You May Be Little but You Can Still Help Review: This story is about a train that was just a littel train but when a big train broke down that was caringing all the toys to the children broke down he had to go and do it. But everyone said that he was jsut to small but he pressed on and he got all the toys their on time.
Rating: Summary: Just the way I remembered it Review: This was one of my favorite books when I was a child and when I read it to my boys it took me back to my childhood. The story is just the way I remembered it. It is the exact same story that I had when I was small. The illustrations are really cute and the story sends a positive message to children. We love reading it together.
