Rating: Summary: A beautiful story Review: Oh how true this is!!! How many times have we said things and later wished we had known all the facts before we opened our big mouths? A lesson we try to teach our children everyday that words can hurt and you should think before you speak. I love the way this one is illustrated as well. I loved the English Roses and was truely impressed w/ both of these books. I anxiously await her next book. Which is about the only thing I've every been interested in when it comes to Madonna.
Rating: Summary: She never stops amazing me Review: Madonna uses her words so wisely. She is amazing at everything she does. This book can teach anyone who reads it. Her deeper knowledge of her love for her kids, herself, her husband and universe really shines. Kids will love it, adults will love it. Awesome illistrations!!!!
Rating: Summary: IMMACULATE EDITION Review: Madonna's latest children's book, "Mr. Peabody's Apples," is both charming and refreshing. Madonna brings her unique style in telling the story of a small boy whose hero, his teacher and baseball coach, has seemingly fallen from grace. The childhood disappointment is described with an endearing reminiscent quality without being at all sentimental. The exercise Mr. Peabody gives to his accuser will shake the impulse to ever say a negative word about anyone to its very core. Loren Long's illustrations are exquisite. They remind me of the kind of illustrations I found myself pouring over and imagining about for hours as a child. "Mr. Peabody's Apples" will be appreciated by both children and adults alike for a long time to come. I look forward to the rest of the books in the series.
Rating: Summary: A great book for kids, it's NOT FOR ADULTS! Review: Critics seem to forget that this (as well as the English Roses) is a book for KIDS, not adults. Therefore, it doesn't need to be as deep as a two hundred page novel. Yes, the story is a bit pedestrian, but this makes it easier for kids to understand. Mr. Peabody's Apples is an excellent book that all kids should read.
Rating: Summary: Touching Review: I just bought the book yesterday and my son and I love it!. he wanted me to read it to him three times before he went to bed. This morning, he asked if I would read it to him this evening. It's a lovely story about the power of words. Madonna writes a beautiful message that should be practiced by children as well as adults. Go buy it today!
Rating: Summary: Better Than The English Roses Review: Being a big Madonna fan, I was excited to read her children's books. I liked the first one, The English Roses, but after reading Mr. Peabody's Apples, I have to say that it is much better. The lesson that is learned and the way Madonna goes about writing it was much easier for a child to understand. In The English Roses, her comments to the reader were a bit distracting. Although I didn't care for it, it wasn't enough to deter me from buying the second book. I was pleased to see that she left out the sarcasm and focused on the story. It was a great read, even for a 20-yr old college sophomore!
Rating: Summary: Too explanatory... Review: While Madonna has chosen a wonderful character trait to highlight in "Mr. Peabody's Apples", I believe that she tries to over-explain the moral of the story rather than giving the child a chance to think for himself. All in all, my five year old son (who devours books) was quite apathetic to the whole plot and found the writing to be too simplistic in relation to the bold and thought provoking illustrations rendered by the, obviously talented, Loren Long.
Rating: Summary: Moralistic, Flat, One-Dimensional, Unoriginal Review: I find it ironic that someone who's posited her entire career on pushing other people's buttons about conventional moral stances should in her children's books be showcasing herself as something of a feminine version of Mr. Rogers. It is doubly ironic that someone who's done everything conceivable to promote gossip about herself has now written something wherein spreading rumors about other people is presented as a negative thing. Then again, when practically everything she does is a marketing gimmick, Madonna can't be accused of being a hypocrite. She's really just a great businessperson, and if there is a hidden moral to this otherwise telegraphically obvious tale, then THAT is it.
Rating: Summary: A Teacher's Opinion Review: Knowing Madonna's past, it was very difficult for me to believe she could write a wholesome book with a tremendous message for children and adults. But, this book accomplished a great life lesson in a touching way. It was very well written and has a relevant message for people of ALL ages. I shared it with my class and have decided to purchase more of Madonna's books. This book is well worth the money. The illustrations are breathtakingily beautiful.
Rating: Summary: A Very Nice Book. Review: I was a bit leery about the story until the end but I liked the message. It is a fable about how people's words can hurt others. The art work is phenomenal and representative of Thomas Hart Benton's paintings.
