Rating: Summary: Better than English Roses but that isn't saying much Review: Madonna does know how to pick fine illustrators. I wish she was as good at writing. I've worked in a children's bookstore, know many booksellers and we all agree...she can't write. The story isn't so bad except that when Mr. Peabody takes the apple, the clerk is standing right there. It seems pretty obvious to the reader that the clerk knows he is taking an apple. So why the big surprise later on in the book? How many of these works is she going to spring on unsuspecting children? There are many other fine books - ask your independent book seller.
Rating: Summary: Good message and beautiful illustration! Review: I can't believe everything Madonna does turns to gold. I liked her first book, "The Englishes Roses" and I liked this book almost as much. I plan to buy her whole set of children's books. Children (even adult ones) all need positive words and meaningful life lessons (like the ones told so beautifully by Madonna) to guide them along the way. :)
Rating: Summary: A Beautiful retailing of a great story. Review: Madonna has really outdone herself. She's taken that classic parable about spreading feathers in the wind and written into a classic story. Unlike the English Roses, this writing isn't awkward, the dialogue isn't uncomfortable. The illustrations are georgeous! The artist has perfectly captured the magic of this small town in a simpler time. The art alone is worth getting the book for. Even if you hate Madonna, this story is wonderful. I highly recommend this book. It is well worth the money.
Rating: Summary: Mr. Peabody's Apples Review: This is a must read for all ages. This story tells a very important message. The illustrations tell the story without words. My family of five all read this book the first day. We were able to talk about the story easily and relate it to our lives. Share this book with everyone. This book makes a wonderful gift.
Rating: Summary: Apples for the Teacher Review: This is a wonderful story, an important and overlooked message, and ends with a great metaphor!
Rating: Summary: 5 Stars, 3 Apples, and 2 Oranges ... Review: On a scale of 1 to 10, I give this book 5 stars, 3 apples, and 2 oranges ... (sorry for mixing apples and oranges, ma, but I'm up to my knuckles in feathers here ... , how's about you???). This is such a wonderful book for kids like me ... (... how do you like dem apples??? ...). You tempt us so much with your imaginationings ... it's unbelievable! (Say hello to BS for me ...)
Rating: Summary: Listen to critics!! Review: "A dreary, heavy-handed tale," snips USA Today, which says that although the book "is supposedly inspired by a 300-year-old story told by Madonna's Kabbalah teacher, the message is pedestrian and predictable." The paper concludes, "The book displays a humorless, ham-fisted morality." According to the Village Voice, "If you strip Madonna of her naughtiness she doesn't have much to offer," adding that the character names -- Tommy Tittlebottom, Mr. Peabody, Mr. Funkadeli -- "sound like dirty jokes waiting to happen." (The title is titter-worthy, too.) AP believes the tome, which debuts today in 36 languages and more than 10 countries, is "a little hokey," with the New York Post calling it "a slight and preachy tale." Madonna may not know kids' books, but she definitely knows kids' book promotion. She's scheduled for a sit-down on "The Late Show with David Letterman" on Tuesday to stump for the release. Don't expect a repeat of her infamous, embarrassing (remember the Big M giving Dave her panties?), expletive-filled appearance in 1994. Since both icons are now parents, we're guessing the convo will have less swearing and more sharing. --quoted from MSN news---
Rating: Summary: Excellent lesson about the danger of rumors Review: This book I couldn't wait to read since I loved the English Roses book so much. It came to my house and luckily the girl who introduced us the Madonna's first book was over so I gathered the girls and my 4 year old son and read them the book. It was such a good book and they were so interested in why Mr.Peabody would be stealing apples. Before you know it everybody in Mr. Peabody's town thinks he is a thief! I won't give it away but there's a lesson on why the rumors are so hard to take back once they are out there and how damaging they could be to a person. A lesson well told and well learned (hopefully).
Rating: Summary: Good Apples Review: People should really forget it's MADONNA, the superstar singer, who wrote this book. Just read it. Madonna did come across as somewhat an unpolished writer on The English Roses but if Mr. Peabody's apples is anything to go by, Madonna seems to have found a new niche.
Beautiful illustrations by Lorent Long adorned the book but these aside, it's really Madonna's adaptation of a 3000-year-old styory told to her by her Kaballah teacher that works. In the ned, Madonna will achieve her goal of getting children to choose what they want to say carefully and not cause other people unhappiness. Words, they often cut like a knife. Madonna has a good storytelling approach, often straight to the point and coherent. Kids will relate most easily together with the pictures.
And this book is not only for children but adults alike who are often lost in the tussle of this mad world, so it'll be good something simple but yet so fundamental that few of us actually remember.
Rating: Summary: These books by Madonna are great Review: After reading both of these books, it looks like Madonna has a great future in book writing. I can't wait to read the next one.
