Rating: Summary: excellent Review: I picked up this book after having it recommended to me several times by HTML programmers that I work with. It really is great. The author does not spend so much time going over code that is hardly used or really emphasized. She thoroughly clarifies all the relevant information that one would really need to remember. Her explanation of style sheets is very comprehensive, the reference tables in the appendix are extremely useful, she consistently gives helpful reminders thorought the book, provides many useful tips and tricks -- overall, the best HTML reference out there.
Rating: Summary: Informative and entertaining Review: Ms. Castro provides exactly the right level of detail for learning HTML and the examples are well-chosen and clearly presented. Her writing style incorporates a touch of humor, which is also nice. Finally, the book is very generous in its support for both Mac vs. Windows as well as Netscape vs. Explorer users and the brief critical reviews of common HTML and image-editing tools seems equally fair.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Resource Review: This book is an excellent guide to learn or brush up on your HTML. It teaches everything in depth and with examples, in a very clear way. It describes CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) in depth also.
Rating: Summary: I just recommended this book to a friend Review: Programming language like HTML is easy to learn when you have a good teacher. Elizabeth Castro is a great teacher. I used her book dailly. It has made my life online so much easier. This is a must read for anyone interested in learning HTML.
Rating: Summary: A Great Reference Review: This is a great book for beginners and a good reference for the more advanced. The text is clear and concise with, of course, ample illustrations. I needed a book to help me brush up on my HTML tags and also give me a quick overview of cascading style sheets (CSS) and scripts such as JavaScript. I bought this book sight unseen based on the Amazon.com reviews and am very happy with what I received.
Rating: Summary: An excellent learning tool and reference. Review: I bought Castro's book along with Joe Burns HTML Goodies. I prefer Castro, although both are good. Burns has a tendency to be too "cute;" he doesn't have to write a dissertation, but I felt that in trying to make his material simple and entertaining he was talking down to me, even though his content and web examples were excellent. At first I found Castro to be dry. The material was presented in what seemed like a repetitive way, and in reading whole chapters everything seemed to run together. However, when I got used to it I realized that the consistent format made it easy to learn new topics because I had got to know where to expect things. I also liked her focus on Catalan and cats, as well as her subtle humor, because it presented her in a very human way, which to me is very important in a technical book. The book's organization is very good and that, along with its comprehensive index, makes it an excellent reference book as well. A technical writer who is (a) good technically and (b) a good writer is rare. Castro is both.
Rating: Summary: Great for beginners as well as experienced site builders. Review: This is the most worn book on the shelf beside my computer. Like the first html book by Elizabeth Castro the instructions are brief , clear and easy to understand . Netscape and IE only extensions are clearly labeled . It's great for 'quick look ups' too! A hexidecimal color chart is included in the back of the book . This is a must have for any site developer's bookshelf .
Rating: Summary: Excellent for beginners and experts Review: This book along with most of the others in the Visual Quick Start series gets it. Learning technical concepts such as HTML does not have to be a painful and alienating process. This book combines simple, modular lessons with frequent illustrations. The presentation of the text is simple and the illustration helps you to see exactly what you are doing. Essentially, the book uses both hemispheres of the brain. If you learn visually, you can focus on the pictures first and absorb the text second. If you learn by processing written instructions, then you can absorb the text first and confirm your understanding of it by refering to the illustrations. Many technical manuals are too dense and use illustrations in a haphazard fashion. This one has been optimized for the best and most enjoyable learning experience. If you are new to HTML coding then this book is an excellent start. If you are experienced, then this book is still a very handy reference. I have friends with software patents who keep it within reach when they use HTML.
Rating: Summary: it's the best Review: this is the best technical book that I've ever read and I've read a lot of such books. Congratulations Elizabeth when will you do one on Python :-)
Rating: Summary: Nice book, lots of helpful info. Review: This book is a very good reference guide. The color chart in back is worth the price of the book.
