Rating: 4 stars
Summary: pass my 215 exam with this
Review: i'd like to give this book a 5 star but some topic about RRAS make me decide to give it a 4 rating. The RRAS topic is incomplete. by the way i passed my 215 exam using this book(not alone though)

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Six stars for this book!
Review: Want to set up, maintain, or fix a W2KServer? Need to know how? Look no further than this book. I bought it for my own personal use, and ended up using it at work as well. Daily! What's more, the book comes complete with a cd-version of it allowing for fast searches and making it really easy to take with you. The book covers everything you'll ever need to know about W2KServer exhaustively and is so well written that if you're a bit of a nerd it reads as if it is an exiting novel.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: It's true - the book is good
Review: I would like to confirm what other people have been writing. The book is well organised, well written and deals with what you want to know. I recommend it!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Simply the best for understanding Windows
Review: If everyone who ran Windows owned a copy of this book, the world would be a safer place. This book takes Win2K by the bull horns, opens its mouth and lets you really know how it works. A must have for anyone looking to securely administer a network with Windows machines.

The clincher for me was on page 1315, when Mr. Minasi discussed a quick and cheap way to protect your machine from power surges.

Complete, exhuastive coverage. Looking forward to 5th edition and/or Master Windows 2003 Server. Maybe Mr. Minasi can convince Microsoft to bundle a copy of the book with every copy of Windows 2003 Server? We can only hope!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Excellent Resource
Review: Minasi knows Microsoft products inside and out. His explanations of concepts are often clearer than those found in official Microsoft literature and he throws in a bit of humour. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in administrating Windows 2000 and to those interested in taking the MCSE exams.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Absolutely the best book on Windows 2000
Review: This book has all the information you'll ever need concerning Windows 2000 server and Active Directory. Mark goes into great detail and does and excellent job of conveying the information. If you are currently running a 2000 Server network or are planning to do so, this is the only reference you'll need. Period.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Very Helpful
Review: We had our primary domain controller crash and it resisted all attempts at restores, so we had to migrate away from it. We continued to have network problems with it out of the chain. I knew pretty much nothing about administering active directory (besides the basics of adding users, etc.) and picked this book up to try to help us. There was a section in it about the first server that gets active directory installed serving as the operations master and how to seize that function to another server. After seizing that (and a few others), our domain started behaving itself again. Along the way, I picked up some other useful knowledge in the same section about NNTP & DNS.

I would echo others that this book will help you with specific problems. I was impressed with the author's use of real-world scenarios and experience as well as the graphics and screen shots to help you so the things he mentions.

This is one book that I think is worth every penny I paid and then some.

Summary: Not kidding, it has mystical powers...
Review: A co-worker of mine owns the third edition. We call it "The Oracle". It provided us with answers to several somewhat common problems we encountered with Windows 2000, so it was handy to have around.

We set up a RIS server at a client site to upgrade about 50 workstations to 2000 Professional. We kept having problems with workstations on other VLANs connecting to the RIS server. We checked the switches and everything was connecting perfectly. Finally, we consulted The Oracle. The author casually relayed that he worked at a site where they "couldn't get a PXE boot to work to save our lives. Then someone noticed that the Ethernet switches had a feature called 'minimal spanning tree' enabled".

We checked with the guy who originally set up the switch and sure enough, it had spanning tree enabled. We turned it off and the workstations connected and upgraded without a hitch!

This is better than any Microsoft-sponsored books out there that do nothing more than tell you how things SHOULD work; this tells you how things DO work.

Highly recommended.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: The one and only.
Review: Hi, my knowledge of Windows 2000 server was quite good before I read this book, I thought. Now I know much, much more of DNS zones, Operations Masters, running big networks and all, thats involved in Windows 2000 Server domains, than before.
It's a large book over 1800 pages, but easy to read and you can't stop reading because it's so interesting. If you have Win 2000 server operating system at home then you can use it like an school book and learn how to do things. You gone have good use of this book, whether you are an Network technician or pure beginner. Buy the book and you won't regret it.

Summary: Average Score for an average product
Review: I feel confident that this book has saved a lot of ... from the proverbial fire. Five stars, however, would represent a euphoria that just didn't overcome me when I sat down to read it. It is a working person's book written in a working person's vernacular ...That's a Good Thing. There has to be a higher quality product available on the market; I just didn't want to spend the time and money to find it. If you have the time and/or money to do so, I recommend that you do. The book is comprehensive in scope but is pedestrian and wordy. The same material can be covered in half the number pages.

I can understand the legitimate assumption that some readers may have no previous knowledge of the subject matter, however you can target a more specific book for them. In my humble opinion this book has become overgrown and overreaching. The authors would do well to reorganize the material into beginner, intermediate, and advanced volumes. The material you need to design, implement, and maintain Microsoft 2000 Servers is there, the folksy presentation won't suit folks - no pun intended - who like a more academic style.
