Rating: Summary: Easy-to-read, broad overview of Win 2K Server Review: Before I say how much I like this book, I'll confess I have not read it cover-to-cover, as I have the 3rd Edition and it is over 1800 pages. But it is a refreshing change from other texts on the same subject written by folks who think MS products are infallible. Why did I get this book? I'm not an IT person, but I write a lot of code... mainly for PHP/MySQL-based web sites that usually run Unix-based systems using Apache servers. When offered the challenge of designing a huge web-based application for my employer's intranet, I accepted, but only later found out I had to run my scripts on a Windows 2000 Server. And to make it worse, I would not be allowed to administer the server... only our IT department staff was allowed admin rights to it. And if that wasn't bad enough, no one on our IT staff knew how to run Win 2K Server. Yet they expected me to have all the answers for them. This book has given me the answers. Now, don't get this book if you are looking for guidance on running PHP/MySQL on Win 2K... no no no. There's plenty of information on the net for that. What I'm talking about is the stuff like Active Directory, or DSN, or SMTP... things that I needed to know to get all our users up and running with the correct permissions to specific directories, databases, email, etc. Its a good introduction to the topics to familiarize yourself with the terminology. If you need advanced coverage on a topic, you may need to get other resources. But this has been a great starting point for me. One point I want to re-emphasise... before I bought this book, I bought another book on MS IIS 5.0 which just about made me sick to my stomach. The other author was some kind of pro-MS zealot and laced the book with lots of sugary-sweet praise for MS. But not Minasi. I was impressed with his balanced perspective and his mix of both compliments and criticisms. Anyway, I recommend this to people who know little to nothing about Windows 2000 Server.
Rating: Summary: Best Technical Book on WIN2K...Outstanding Review: The best technical book I have read on WIN2K...I find this book to be a great resource with valuable technical tips and topics such as IPSEC!...Go and get this book if you still struggling with WIN2K. Cheers...
Rating: Summary: Mastering Windows 2000 Server (4th Edition) Review: What can I say? Mark is the best.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Book...Worth the Money Review: This is the first time I am writing a review in Amazon.com though I have been a customer for 3 years now. What prompted me to write for the first time is that this book covered excellent material, worth the money, with a great reading pleasures compared to other technical books that I had read over the years (though the book volume its more than 1500 pages). In addition, as an Internet Project Manager, the book written by Mark and his team impresses me. The book is a great investment. Don't implement WIN2K if you don't have this book!
Rating: Summary: Thorough, yet Clear Review: This is the best book I've read on Windows 2K Server. Others I've read have fallen either into the trap of being too shallow and not covering enough material, or being too technical and unintelligible. I really enjoyed the depth and clarity of this book. It obviously isn't best to read this book cover to cover. If you're looking for that, Windows 2000 Server for Dummies was good. But if you are looking for a great reference work, I highly recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: Mark Setting the benchmark for wink 2k writting Review: this book is a must for everyone who is serious about windows 2000. Let me put things this way; I have read it from cover to cover and felt like i was reading a novel on "how to feel in love with win2k". Mark Minasi is simply the best technical writer about windows 2000. you get the impression that he really enjoys himself passing his knowledge. the chapter on active directory is really compreenssive. the book addresses all types of sytem admins from single to multiple domain cenarios. the chapter on deploying windows 2k itself pays the investment. from setup manager to ris services, you learn how to deploy multiple machines in a real quick and easy way. even though mark is always stating that he feels his books are no study guides to pass MS exams, the truth is that i have achieved my mcse cetification with this book and the help of the transcenders - nothing else. it's just a shame that this guy is not portuguese, so that i could go and see him speak about windows.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Resource, Always Handy! A must have for admins! Review: This book is incredible. When I first purchased Windows 2000 Server to run my own webpage, I was clueless until my academic advisor (also a computer junkie) told me about this book. I purchased it the next day and I must say that it is definately the best Windows 2000 Server book out there. It is amazing how much information you can get out of this single book. If you're new to Windows 2000 Server, then this book will give you the kick start you need. Or, if you already are into Win2k Server, then this book will show you every feature that Windows 2000 Server has to offer. It is probably my most used reference book I have ever bought, even more usable than my school books (and a lot cheaper too)!
Rating: Summary: Partial Review. Review: I have only read up to chapter 4. Making that point clear, the only thing I can say about this book is: How many computer books you can say you non-stop? This book is a page-turner! Extremely well written, very open-oriented and detailed. Full with advices all around. The only reason why I am writting this review before finishing it is because I got the Fourth Edition 2 weeks ago at a local bookstore... I don't know why this website still carries the older version.... So look for the new one! It is THE Win2k book to have in your library...
Rating: Summary: Minasi is peerless. Review: . Definitely 5 stars. Hard to say more than has already been said. Content: Extremely thorough and accurate. Better possibly than his Windows NT Server 4 edition. Writing Style: Intuitive and light/humorous. Knowledge: Obviously an expert in the Enterprise. Usability: When we write documentation on how our server and dc's are set up, we often refer to page #'s from Mark's books where he documents the undocumented. Check his other books, I think you'll find he is the best of the best when it comes to authoring technical material. Mark, thanks for another GREAT one!
Rating: Summary: Nothing special Review: Usually Minasi puts out great books however this one is more a study/learning guide than an actual pragmatic, in-the-field manual of network administration of Windows 2000. If you are new and want to learn, this is a good book but if you seek an administrator's companion of real-world network administration experience this is not the one to get the job done.
