Rating: Summary: Its a good book if you are just starting Review: Well I had VB a few weeks before I got this book and I had been learning from online info before I got it. So I did not get that much out of it. Its one of those books that should have came with VB because it is for newbies to the language the to the IDE. But If you have done nothing with VB or any programing at all This is a good book to start with. It would have saved me a lot of time online posting to newsgroups and searching web sites if I had this book from the start.
Rating: Summary: Another MS Press let down Review: My experience with MS press has not been that great. This is the second MS press book I have bought and I've been pretty disappointed. This book just barely covers the basics of VB programming. You will need more beyond this book to truly understand VB programming. If you are new to Visual Basic I would recomend Wrox Press' Beginnning Visual Basic 6.0 by Peter Wright. It is much more thorough and goes into much more depth than this book for a similar price.
Rating: Summary: Not to shabby! Review: Great for the newcomers. The layout is simple and effective. My classes were based on this book, and I scored very well on my tests due to the thorough job the book does.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Book for a Beginner Review: I am not a professional programmer but wanted an introduction to VB 6.0 just to see what it was all about. The book starts you out easy and works you up to an introduction of several more advanced topics. Loved the book. Well layed out and easy to follow.
Rating: Summary: Nice layout but teaches poor progarmming pracitces Review: Based on the reviews of others, I selected this book as a text for my VB class. While the book layout and topic are well done, the author introduces very poor programming practices. He likes use of Variant data types, which are very inefficient. Other bad habits are the way that variable types are declarated. My students gave a very lukewarm reception to this book. You can learn to program in VB using this book, but you will not learn good programming habits.
Rating: Summary: FOR BEGINNER PROGRAMMERS Review: THIS BOOK IS EXCELLENT FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE JUST STARTING TO LEARN ABOUT VISUAL BASIC. EACH PAGE IS VERY DESCRIPTIVE, STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS. BY THE TIME YOU FINISHED READING THE BOOK AND GOING THROUGH THE LESSONS ON THE CD, YOU WILL WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT VB!
Rating: Summary: Great book for VB Newbies Review: I never thought VB could be so easy. I only knew HTML and now Ialso now VB. Ya, it took me two months. But, I got it all down now anduse it at work. This book has made me into a happy little computer geek. ...Just pace yourself and this book will teach you the basic's and you'll be all the happier for it.
Rating: Summary: Excellent book for experienced developers new to VB Review: Coming from a Delphi applications developer background, I found this book easy to follow for my introduction to VB 6. I didn't realize how easy VB is to learn. This book is packed with information covering many topics including ADO and Active X controls, string handling, internet controls. Of course, the topics covered were just a taste and not indepth at all. It was just enough information to get your feet wet. Most of the chapters had applications to practice coding. However, there were several chapters that had sample applications but didn't have any practice code to type. He just went through the pre-written code and explained the key statements. It was more of a reference than actual typing and learning. This books isn't for beginning programmers. But it is a good transition book from other languages to Visual Basic. For my first Visual Basic book, I learned a lot.
Rating: Summary: Helpful VB Book Review: I read many books on how to learn Visual Basic. But i have got wider knowledge when i read that book, which is very very helpful and useful. a piece of advice go for it.
Rating: Summary: It may step you through VB but it doesnt explain it Review: I dont know why people keep saying this book is "great for beginners" because it definitly isnt. The author steps you through the techniques but doesnt bother to explain to you what each line of code does. Most of the time hes like "I'll explain more about this later on", but why even bother writing code that you know absolutley nothing about. It's like doing a tune-up on your car and not knowing what it is your doing or trying to accomplish. This book trys to explain WAY TOO MUCH info to you at once. Thats why there are individual books about databases and DHTML and activeX objects. But the author trys to cram it all in. After you read this book and try to create your own program, you'll wish you knew what all those lines of code in the book meant. In general, if you really want a book that explains these type of subjects, go with with a book by John Smiley, his Learn to Program books are great cause he really explains why it is you are doing something. And he tells you about the principles before you just break open the code window and start typing in stuff you have no idea about.
