Summary: the best book for beginners - no question about this
Review: The author of this book is not only a computer programmer but also a professor. He knows how to teach.

Most computer programmers can not express themselves clearly and for that reason students have hard time understanding new concepts.

Michael is a very, very diffrent instructor. He makes everything easy and clear. I strongly recommend his book to all of those who wish to learn basic concepts of Visual Basic.

Summary: Excellent for beginners
Review: I found this book to be an excellent first book for beginners to Visual Basic. The writing is clear and concise. It is packed with code examples and screen shots which a beginner will greatly appreciate. I enjoyed it so much that I regreted not buying sooner and featuring it on my VB books web site.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: very clear and well-written!!
Review: This book is well written and covers each topic in the book well. I especially like the author's including the tool icon to help find it on the toolbar. However, I think the author should have included exercises to make the user write a program on their own. It'd really help the remembering effort. Also wish there were more advanced stuff inthe book!

Summary: Fine for beginners
Review: This book is an excellent place to start for beginners to VB and beginners to programming in general. For those familiar with VB, the in-depth coverage of programming structures will seem a bit tedious. A big plus is that all of the sample code WORKS and the text seems to be free of errors and typos. The only thing that keeps me from rating this book more highly is that it teaches some programming practices that are a bit unsound--for example, not naming your controls appropriately and not using option explicit.

Summary: Great for beginners but too easy for professionals
Review: As a beginner to VB programming without much of C, or C++ knowledge, this book is great. For people who come from a programming background, this book explains too much simple concepts but not enough in-depth details. You get a general feel of what you can do with VB. This book is worth its value if you don't know anything about VB.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Not the best to learn VB
Review: You will have fun in doing things step by step according to the book. However, you cannot really LEARN VB only depending on this book. After reading it, you will feel you learnred something, but you will aslo feel difficult to things your own. VB is not well explained in this book. This book is better regarded as a book demonstrating VB features. To learn VB, start with Peter Wright's Beginning VB. You may also consider to read Peter Wright's book first and then read this book.

Summary: Excellent book for beginners
Review: This book doesn't assume that you know ANYTHING about programming; it's great for people with absolutely no background in C, C++, Java, or any scripting language; however, knowing any of the above is an advantage. The first several chapters of the book deal basically with using the Visual Basic 6.0 programming environment; and that's a lifesaver. I'd have been completely lost without it. I would recommend this book to people with no background in programming -or- Windows, because it assumes you know nothing; which is a logical assumption in a beginner's book. It is a little wordy, and often refers you to online help, which I have found to be difficult to use, but all in all it's a fabulous way to get your feet wet. I'm almost finished with it, and I wish they had a VB Professional Step by Step part II, cos I doubt any other book could hold a candle to this one. It's worth every penny.

Summary: Excellent Book that I would recommend to everyone!
Review: Excellent Book for the Beginner. I just graduated from High School in May and the only Computer Programming I had ever seen was in the Computer Science class I took when I was a Senior. The Language we studied was very basic Pascal. So when I picked this book up is was a whole different world of programming. This book helped me out a lot! Thank You! I now use Visual Basic with my Web Designing and I use it Microsoft Access.

Summary: Good Coverage of Basics and How to's
Review: This book is an excellent coverage of the basics of VB6.0. As with anything you may need to buy more than 1 intro book on Visual Basic. Another good one to complement this one is Beginning Visual Basic 6 by Peter Wright. I just wish I could find one I like to move on from here. I'm looking but not finding. If this book had gone into a little more depth in ADO I would have given it 5 Stars.

Summary: Great book for the Beginner
Review: I can't say enough about this book. I am a beginner and I have learned so much from both the book and the author. Mike has done a wonderful job presenting the information. This book benefits both the beginner and the expert. I just could not put it down after a few chapters I had to continue on and keep learning. The book is designed in parts so that if you are already familiar with a particular area you can move through without waisting time. The companion disk provides all you need to jump right in and start writing your first application. Thanks Mike for a job well done. Many will reap the benefits from a true professional.
