Rating: Summary: PERFECT for the real world Review: "The examples that come to mind are his organizational trees. Who cares about that?" I do! Our company has a hierarchical structure with imperfections. His examples cut the number of queries we use in half and allow flexibility for future expansion.
Rating: Summary: SQL for Smarties Review: A nice programers reference, full of examples on how to do appl ication programing in sql. If you are a program uses SQL often you may find this helpful.

Rating: Summary: A great SQL reference guide the experienced sql user Review: Being a professional Database Administrator using Ingres, I wanted a good SQL reference book and I found it. This book does not teach you SQL it is designed for those who are already familiar with basic conventions; what it does do is to highlight areas where you could improve the efficiency of the code you write. This resides on my desk permanently and should be treated as a reference bible rather than a tutorial. The gems it contains cannot be absorded at first reading...you will refer to it again and again. A fine book and a great buy.
Rating: Summary: Most readable technical book Review: Celko has an amazing ability of making technical stuff seem readable and easy. A very enjoyable read.
Rating: Summary: An absolute MUST for any serious SQL programmer Review: First of all, I couldn't recommend this book for beginners. It is, however, PERFECT for the SQL programmer with some experience who is looking to take his/her SQL abilities to the next level. There are great pure SQL solutions for problems that many programmers think must be done outside of SQL in a host language. One of the most important lessons from the book is this: think in terms of sets and set theory instead of in terms of columns and rows. Lots of other great info though. Be warned: the examples are all written in the SQL-92 ANSI standard. Examples will have to be modified if your vendor-specific implementation of SQL doesn't follow the standard precisely. Kudos to Joe.
Rating: Summary: SQL for Smarties Review: Given the title I thought it would have more advanced advice for more challenging problems. I've been using SQL for a while, and I didn't really see any new or unique solutions in here. On the other hand, it is a solid treatment of the subject so I do recommend it if you are still new to SQL.

Rating: Summary: Very Good book Review: I bought this book because Henderson "TSQL for gurus" mentioned it, actually I bought all Celkos books, they are great and even if you think you can outsmart the book and the writer you wont get far. It takes time to be good in SQL since it is totaly different from standard procedural language. This books shows you lots of things you may ask why the heck do I need this? abd many would say well the SQL I used has this feature and I dont need that Ansi stuff, but the point is the book makes you think SQL and that is what its goal was not compare or choose a particular SQL implementation, I myself am attached to T-SQL so i tried to do things MS way.I recomend it and if you really want to pushed the way you think SQL forward buy some miles buy it.. Sure anybody can write a query .....but how many ways can you do it?
Rating: Summary: Exceptional quality in a computer manual Review: I cannot work without this book. Stuck with a poor database structure and huge volumes of data, I have had to explore every trick of the trade. Few computer books in general provide information that is accurate, helpful, and not repetitive of manuals and online material that is already available to you. This book is of exceptional value. Someone swiped mine and believe me, I must have another copy. How many of the computer books you have purchased get that kind of respect? Warning: Beginners may need another book and it is not a replacement for your SQL vendor specific reference.
