Rating: Summary: Formalized good ideas Review: There are not much SQL books out there on the market. SQL, is some what a tricky language. The theory is simple starter texts are available but what you would really like to see is a result set of the kind you want in a reasonable time, without client side workarounds. Celco in this book presents good solutions to "real" real world problems rather than teaching SQL on a employee database. The ideas are formalized, but the text should have been edited much better. If you earn your money out of RDBMS's, this book shoul be on your shelf. Absolutely not a beginner or an intermediate book. For advanced programmers only.
Rating: Summary: typos typos typos & sloppy explanations Review: There is a lot here, some of it quite advanced and quite good. But well over half the examples I looked at had errors -- typos often, or repeated chunks of text. This made the examples pretty much worthless. His prose explanations are often very unclear indeed.
Rating: Summary: Optimised SQL Ahoy! Review: This book has been marvellous for me. I've been dealing with large ERP databases for the last two years now and Joe has really helped me tune and optimise my SQL to get the best out of the SQL-92 standard (and make my queries run at least 50% faster!) I believe that this book is a MUST for anyone who takes their SQL seriously; whether you're a student, a developer or a systems analyst, you can be sure to learn a lot from here and squirm at all the SQL pitfalls you've been digging yourself into. Great stuff.
Rating: Summary: Valuable but flawed Review: This book is indispensable for a thorough knowledge of SQL, but it is decidedly not for the beginner. I'd rate it 5 except for the abysmal editing and proofreading -- far too many errors for a book costing over $30. Kudos to Joe Celko, shame on Morgan Stanley.
Rating: Summary: Must for every SQL expert Review: This book is not for beginners or people with little SQL knowledge. It helps to enhance your methodical approach for problem solving. It needs some more examples so that people with little knowledge of SQL can grasp it . I haven't seen any book comparable to this one for learning different techniques of writing tuned queries which seem to be very complicated in first approach.. Make sure you are not buying it to learn syntax
Rating: Summary: If you know some SQL and want to learn more, this is it! Review: This book is not his basic volume in SQL, but his advanced volume. It helps you along explaining different issues with an excellent explanation of NULLS, their pros and their cons. It gives examples of solving problems in different SQL ways. A great buy.
