Rating: Summary: Excellent reference book. Review: Although many other authors and publishers claim that there isn't another Excel book like their's, in this case it is true. The book reads the way a true Help manual should, quick and to the point. There are so many tips and tricks listed in this book that every chapter can teach even the oldest of dogs new tricks. There is a nice blend of tips that speed up spreadsheet navigation, auditing and use with easy to follow examples that introduce some of the most useful features of Excel. If you have ever cringed whilst watched people using Excel inefficiently, just wait until you've mastered some of the techniques explained in this book. The book has examples using VBA but the intent of the book is not to teach VBA extensively. In keeping with the theme of the book, most of the VBA examples that are included are useful and can be directly imported into you workbooks without modification. i.e. useful real-world examples. "Mr. Excel on Excel" is purely and simply a very well-written reference manual for those of us that need the answers quickly.
Rating: Summary: Some Useful Ideas Review: An average book for Excel tips. My major frustration with this book was the writing. The authors go into excrutiating step-by-step detail of how to implement various Excel solutions. Additionally, the authors fail to adequately "set-up" the task at hand. In other words, the time spent on telling one how to do something is much too long as compared to telling them "why" to do something. I find the books which achieve this to be the most valuable. If you want to add another reference book to your Excel collection, this book has its place. However, I would purchase "Excel Hacks" first.
Rating: Summary: A Must Have for Accountants Review: As an accountant who deals with complex applications, I have found the book to be very useful. Specifically the chapters dealing with filters, subtotals, and pivot tables have been easy to follow. The examples provided with each technique are just great. The consolidation chapter should also be given proper notice. The book provides examples of techinques on how to compare lists (charts of account) without using formulas. Very useful! I highly recommend the book.
Rating: Summary: Ups and downs Review: As an Excel trainer for the past fifteen years, I've seen what does and doesn't work in presenting information to users. There are many good ideas in this book, and deserve being written about. But while some of them are presented well, others sometimes miss the mark. The ones that work give some very helpful information that could be used on the road to mastering Excel. They involve tips that are sure to boost the user's efficiency. But the ones that don't work sometimes portray a solution that is not necessarily the most effective in each case. In those cases, I felt that there were alternatives that would involve fewer steps, fewer keystrokes, or perhaps fewer lines of VBA code. Hopefully those who buy the book will be able to tell the difference between them.
Rating: Summary: I was disappointed Review: As both a long-term book editor and a lover of Excel, I am always on the lookout for good Excel books. An acquaintance showed me "Mr Excel on Excel" and I was not impressed. There did not seem to be an easy flow to the information presented. In many cases I had to read the same material several times over to get the gist of what was being said. Had this book crossed my editorial desk, I would have definitely spent more time smoothing out these areas, and making them easier for an audience of all levels. As an advanced Excel user, I'm afraid that beginners to Excel may find it a little difficult to follow at times.

Rating: Summary: An absolute must have time saving tool Review: For anyone out there who is really motivated to improve their Excel skills and save time with new efficient tools and techniques. This is a must have book for all professionals using Excel on a daily basis. I have reached levels in Excel that I didn't even realize existed. Well worth the money.
Rating: Summary: Well worth the money Review: Given how many Excel books there are out there, it can't be easy to write a good one that fills a genuine gap in the market. Nevertheless, Jelen & Rubin have managed to do just that. Aimed primarily at the intermediate user, "MrExcel on Excel" is packed full of tips that will get you using Excel much more effectively. The book will not teach you everything there is to know about Excel; nor will it show you how, with some fancy API programming, you can make Excel do the washing-up and walk the dog. What it will do is show you techniques and tricks that will speed up tasks you already think you know how to do, and introduce you to a few that will show you how to do things you thought couldn't be done. If you've already used Excel and want to use it better, then buy this book - in time saved alone it should pay for itself in under a month

Rating: Summary: Much too over-priced Review: Having spent time as head of a software publishing firm, I feel I have a solid grasp on good presentation and fair pricing. There is simply not enough quality substance with this book to justify the hefty price tag. The authors would have done better to take less material and present it more clearly.
