Summary: Passed Jan 27th!
Review: I have just read the Security+ Passport by Trevor Kay and I must say it is one of the best cram book out there for this exam.
I took the beta exam and didn't pass because of lack of proper training material. I wrote the Security+ exam Jan 27th after reading this book and I got 820 (764 is a pass).
Thank you Trevor!!

Summary: Not deep enough and dident cover all areas
Review: I have taken the test twice now. First time i took it with no preperation and got a 640. I got the book, studied it and got a 760, both fails. I was getting in the 90's on both prep exams provided with the book. The two tests were extremely different and the Meyers book would have gotten me past the first test, but was almost no help for the second. It is a good book to for a beginner but not for an actual test prep.

Summary: Lacking in depth
Review: I passed the exam, but I wouldn't say that this book was a great help in that regard.

I thought this book was too superficial in its coverage; if I hadn't had prior experience there would have been questions I would have missed simply because the book didn't even bring it up. There was even one instance on the exam where the terminology used was different than the terminology defined in the book.

Bottom line is that I wouldn't suggest using this book, even as a quick review before the test.

Summary: Awesome read right before the exam
Review: I picked up this book a week before my exam. I have used another book as part of my study guides and I wanted a fresh outlook on this exam (I was really nervous about this exam). They are not Cheap! I found some really good tips and information that was on the exam in this book that I did not find in the other study guide I was reading. This book was great to have as a good quick review of the exam topics before I sat the real exam. I really helped me pass!

Summary: looks very little like the real exam
Review: I read this book 3 times, did the practice exams and others, and thought I was ready... After the first couple of questions on the exam, I knew I was in for a long morning. The book and practice exams exposed me to a slice of security topics, so I'm the better person for it. BUT, it was supposed to prepare me for the exam. I think it covered approx. 33% of the exam questions. Another 33% of the exam I had to pull from my 20+ yrs of experience in it and some luck. The last 33% of the exam were just guesses on my part, never hearing of some of this stuff.

What a waste, buying this book (yes, I failed, only getting 70% correct). I wonder if buying a [$] book would have been better. There is no way I can take this test again, with a better set of practice tools (books). I am so ... disappointed, wasting my time like this
with this book as a prep.

STAY AWAY, and invest elsewhere.....

Summary: Great review of the exam
Review: I recommend this book to anyone who is already familiar with security concepts. I found this book to be a great refresher to read before you go into the exam. If you are a newbie I recommend using this book as a second resource since it is a cram book targeted at the experienced audience (like me).

Summary: Good, but not great
Review: I sed the passport book along with the Syngress Security+ book, and found that the Syngress book had a better in-depth coverage of the material. That said, the passport book was a good secondary resource for the exam.

Summary: NOT Nearly Complete!!!
Review: I used Mike Meyers Net+ for the Net+ exam and easily passed. Since I enjoyed his books I grabed this for the Secruity+ exam.

Boy was I surprised when I went into take the exam the test was much more difficult than the book had lead me to believe. Needless to say I did not pass the exam.

The problem is this book does not cover in detail what it needs to cover. It glosses over and gives you 5 sentances where there should be 5 pages!

CompTIA's Security+ exam is not a basic entry lvl exam for grading first year IT persons. No this is the hardest CompTIA exam I have ever taken and this book will not prepare you for the realities of the test.

Take it from someone who knows and has passed the Security+ exam avoid this book and Security+ Exam Cram 2 (Exam Cram SYO-101), for more questions on the Exam Cram 2 book find my review of it.

The book I recommend and was recommended to me is the only book to use is: Security+ Study Guide and DVD Training System by Syngress Shinder Books. I have done a review of it so feel free to read it!

Erik; A+, Net+, Security+, soon to be MCSA.

Summary: Great Book Excelent Study Aid
Review: I used this book as a last week before testing study guide. It's great review of all the major key points. While it didn't go into deep detail on many of the subjects, it does outline all of them. If you can read each of the chapters within the expert time given at the begining of each of them then you're ready for the test. I got 890/900, Now it's time for the CISSP and I will definitly buy the Passport book for that.

I do agree with other reviewers though, this book is a review book and shouldn't be used alone.

Summary: Security+ Certified....
Review: I used this passport book along with the Security+ Study Guide and DVD Training System. I found the Passport book to be a well needed read right before the exam.
The exam tips are on target and the flow of the book was just like the real exam.
Thanks Trevor!
