Rating: Summary: Save your money and read the API docs. Review: This book did not teach me anything new! I downloaded the trial version of the Java Web server, looked at some of the sample servlets, read the API documentation, and then bought this book with the intent to learn more on the Servlet technology. Much to my surprise, I didn't learn a thing! The first couple of chapters feature a bunch of toy programs. There is also a file upload servlet, but the web server comes with one that is much shorter and easier to understand. Thanks, but no thanks, I'm returning it!
Rating: Summary: A very good book for Java Servlet programming Review: This is one of the fine books, which I read. The other books are The C++ Programming Language by Bjorne Stroustrup, Inside COM by Dale Rogerson, Professional Style Sheets for HTML and XML by Frank Boumphrey, Inside Distributed COM by Guy Eddon and Henry Eddon and Designing Component Based Applications by Mary Kirtland. Coming to this book: In this book authors Jason Hunter and William Crawford not only explained Servlet technology, but also they showed how to use it, in detail. This book covered a to z of developing distributed applications using HTTP(web) through Servlets. In this book everypage is useful and worth reading including appendices.
Rating: Summary: Best in the Market. Review: This the best book on the subject. It's better than official documentation and tutorials. Buy it, Mr. editor! do I get commission?
Rating: Summary: Lets you start right away Review: I took me 1 day and 2 chapters just to directly begin programming my servlets !!! The advantage of this book is that it is not for reading at night in your bed. It discusses very useful topics and has instructive examples but of course you must be familiar with HTTP protocol and WEB issues and have average knowledge in JAVA
Rating: Summary: Excellent book for understanding the internals of Servlets. Review: This book can be an excellent source of understanding and knowledge for beginers and experts as wel.
Rating: Summary: The best (useful) Java book I haven't bought so far ! Review: This book's cool, content rich, from ground up to enhanced technique. Buy it. It's worth it.
Rating: Summary: The best book on servlet programming Review: This is an excellent resource on Servlet programming. The author has taken a great care to cover all areas of servlet programming. The meat of the book starts from Chapter-7(Session tracking!).
Rating: Summary: Excellent learning and reference material Review: O'Reilly books rarely disappoint. I own over a dozen O'Reilly titles, and _Java Servlet Programming_ follows the trend by supplying in-depth, concise information, without all the fluff and fillers most technical texts contain. Coming from a strong Java Servlet development background, I purchased this book as a reference. However, after reading the first 50 pages I realized there was still plenty to learn. This book teaches well and does not miss a trick in doing so. The text is well written and the examples are simple, yet to the point. Looking at all the lousy technical texts out there which are over 800 pages with 14 point fonts and page after page of bloated code listings, it is refreshing to have a company like O'Reilly who puts out quality, fluff-free publications time after time.
Rating: Summary: This Book Will Get You Started Review: If you know JAVA and HTTP this book will get you started on Servlets. If you already know Servlets in detail it is not much of a reference. But, if you want to learn servlet programming without the headaches of learning by chance and circumstance then this book will be of great assistance.
Rating: Summary: very good book for both beginners and medium-term readers Review: easy to understand, good examples. a friend asked why i kept it with me all the time. to be honest, one of the few computer books that non-fanatical developers can read for pleasure.
