Summary: A Great Resource for DBA shops with Examples and Code on CD
Review: A book that is to be a great resource book! The examples that are presented in this book, along with the CDROM,and the detail instructions on how to build something with SQL Server 2000 are extremely easy to understand and useful. The book is already benefiting my DBA team create standards, procedures, best practices, etc. Some great example code and sample DBA shop documentation on the CDROM as well.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Book was well written. Book and CDROM are VERY USEFUL!!
Review: Book was well written and contains many valuable sections that define a SQL Server DBA role in a detailed manner. The book contains many additional and crucial chapters not found in a typical SQL Server DBA book (i.e. technical writing, data modeling, Oracle and Sybase Migrations) that are needed to be a well-rounded DBA. The included CDROM is awesome!! It contains many sample scripts and support document templates that can be used every day on the job. It is a CDROM that I carry with me at all times.
I would strongly recommend buying this book!! Great job!!

Summary: Always keep it near
Review: Carl is a working DBA. He has a deep grasp of the cluster environment and what it takes to keep SQL Server working. He is very interested in presenting the material in the clearest form. If you do not have this book buy it. The information is worth it.

Summary: SQL DBA
Review: Don't buy this book! Most of the text in this book is word for word right out of the help files with no further explanations. I'm an MS-SQL admin and programmer and I find it extremely aggravating to read the SQL Server Books Online help files and crack this book open for more information only to find the exact same thing in print. I'm throwing it in the garbage.

Summary: Disappointed
Review: I agree with the other person who gave this book one star. This book reminded me of SQL books online. If you go to each screen and click on Help it will give you the same information as what's in this book - nothing else. I was disappointed that the author didn't go into detail as to what options are the best to choose - that's what I am looking for.

Summary: An outstanding and very productive DBA guidebook!
Review: I am a DBA Manager and have purchased and read this book with much satisfaction. The book has been thought out and reads very well. The use of bullets throughout the book allows my DBAs to get to the information quickly without fumbly through alot of text. I am excited about the chapters that go beyond understanding SQL Server technology (which the book does a great job going ove: Backups and Restores, OLTP, Capacity Planning, OLAP, and much more) and help a DBA understand and better themselves in their role. I am talking about the Data Modeling, Technical Writing, Verbal/oral communication chapters. The chapters in the book that go over Oracle and Sybase Databases migrations to SQL Server have helped us tremendously during our Oracle to SQL Server Data Warehouse projects. The included CDROM is exceptional. I have not seen any CDROM like this included in any books before. It is a CDROM that my DBAs access and use on a daily basis. It helps many DBA support documents (for inventorying servers, creating a backup and disaster recovery plan, drawings that define SQL Server hardware configurations for Database servers, and much more) that have assisted me in my daily tasks.
I have purchased 5 additional copies for each DBA on my team and will suggest this to other SQL Server DBA Managers.

I can definitely tell that this book was written by a DBA who has much interest in his work and the SQL Server DBA role.

I highly recommend purchasing this book!!

Summary: A SQL book for Beginners ONLY!
Review: I bought it reading all the good reviews about it being touted as a "Book for all DBA's". I would definitely disagree. It's definitely a book for beginners. As a book for the beginner DBA, it does a good job of going through all the tasks that a DBA need to do, and shows all the things that SQL 2000 can do. But the information on each aspect of SQL is glassed over. It doesn't get into much detail. But for what it does cover, is well written and well-organized. So, as a beginner book, I would give it a 4-5 star rating, but as a book for all DBA's, it's 1-star. I averaged the two to get my official rating -- a 3-star.

Summary: The BEST SQL SERVER DBA book in years
Review: I have read the book and I am recommending this to all of my fellow DBAs, both as a technical reference manual and for exam prep. The book contains a concise and easy to read explaination of all the main topics in SQL Server 2000 with scripts and a great included CDROM!

This book gets into the nuts and bolts of day-to-day tasks that a SQL Server DBA goes through. It's a great reference book to keep on your desk and close to you at all times.

I credit this book with saving many of my projects!

I recommend this book very highly!

Summary: Different and Unique makes it a Great Book!
Review: I was given this book title by a fellow DBA. The book is essential for me to get a grasp and understanding of the role I will be performing as a DBA. I have been asked by my managers to create SQL Server support documentation, and this has become achievable due to the CDROM in the book which contains many starter support documents. I am in an environment where Oracle exists and have to move data and sometimes schema to SQL Server. There is a great chapter in the book that assisted me. I was a little weak in data modeling and the book got me going in a much better and productive direction.

I highly recommend the book for those who are looking to become more diversified and more complete with respect to their DBA role.
