Summary: Great book on SQL Server 2000 and the DBA role
Review: This is a very informative book that I consult with on a daily basis. The book exceeded my expectations! Before it came out, I could not find a book that completely defined the SQL Server DBA role, many just discussed the technology. This book goes over the SQL Server technology very well and contains extra chapters that discuss secondary, and important, responsibilites that a SQL Server DBA must perform with profiency. The book is written with much level of detail to assist me in finding a solution. The Designing a Database server chapter was extremely helpful for me to get my point across to the System Admins on what a database server needs to be a productive system by covering hardware considerations such as RAID controllers, file system, drive storage, memory and more.

The code samples in the book and the extra samples on the CD are excellent and are very helpful. The included CDROM is exceptional and definitely one of a kind. Many included CDROMs in technical books are useless. This book has a very productive and effective CDROM. It was definitely written by a DBA who works in the field and nows what he needs to have around for reference. The documents on the CDROM are effective templates to create DBA support documents. WOW!!!!

Summary: Great Tool and Resource, a must for every DBA!
Review: Wow!! I was excited to see a book that for the first time actually discussed the complete role of a SQL Server DBA, and not just the technology aspect. Beyond having the sections that discuss the technology offerings of SQL Server 2000 in a productive manner, it also goes into hardware, Windows 2000 Administration for the DBA, data modeling, and communication skills.

The included CDROM is a resource that is a must for all to have. It is, as others have said, quite different and much more useful than other technical book's cdroms. I have this CD with me at all times ready to use.

I strongly recommend this book as a great tool and reference to all DBAs, Team Leads, DBA Managers and others interested in the SQL Server DBA role.
