Summary: Carl Speshock is "The Man"
Review: I worked with Carl on a project in Houston. When he came in, our database architecture was a 1. When he left, it was a 10. The man is "The Bomb". Buy this book. He is a 5 star guy and this is a 5 star book.

Carl, "You are killing me".

Summary: A very good book for the professional administrator
Review: If you manage multiple SQL Servers for a living, you need this book. I turn to it again and again. It is not your father's admin guide, but that is what I like about it. You get the impression from reading it that the author has managed a server or two.

I don't keep many books on my desk for ready access, but this is one of them. I highly recommend this one and suggest you read it if you want to be a professional SQL DBA.

Summary: A must for all SQL SERVER DBAs!!!
Review: The book is extremely informative with respect to the SQL Server DBA role as a whole, not just the technology aspect of it.

The included CDROM is quite unique and different from many technical books, it is actually useful!! It contains DBA support documents in a template format that are extrodinarily productive and informative. I was able to create my SQL Server DBA shop operations manual from this CD.

The SQL Server DBA needs to be a well rounded individual in todays corporate environment, having not only the technical skills but also effective business processing, data modeling, technical writing, and communication skills. The book goes over all these.

I have bought a copy for each of my DBAs in the shop and we are setting up training sessions from the book.

I recommend this book to all DBAs, managers, tech leads and any one else who wants a complete definition of the SQL Server DBA role.

Summary: Understand the Complete Role of a DBA!
Review: The book is refreshing to read about the many different roles that a productive DBA needs to be knowledgeable with and to become efficient in. Many technical books go into great effort about the SQL Server technology, which I feel you can more info via MSDN, magazines, and conferences. But, no one goes into the complete role. Many DBAs are not proficient in data modeling, selecting hardware for database servers, creating support documentation, and understanding the OS and network settings that are effective and beneficial for a database server. This book goes into all of this.

Summary: Best book for my new DBA role!
Review: This book has given me what I needed for the SQL Server DBA position I have been tasked with to perform. The book goes over many aspects(Hardware, Windows OS administration, Data modeling, technical writing, SQL Server Technology, and much more)of the DBA role that are required to become proficient in to be successful as a DBA. The CDROM is for once a useful CD that can be used by a DBA on a every day basis with respect to the scripts and documents that are on the CD.

It is a great book that is well written and you can tell it comes from a DBA who is active in the field and has experience.

I would recommend this book for all to buy

Summary: A MUST-HAVE book for all SQL Server DBAs
Review: This book is a must for all DBAs! It is the first of its kind to go over the complete DBA role. It has help me as a DBA to better understand of what is expected of me and how I can grow within my career. The areas of Windows OS and Network administration for DBAs, Hardware selection, Data Modeling, Technical Writing and Communication skills are all areas that many DBAs need to sharpen their skills to be a well-rounded DBA. The CDROM, which includes many useful support document templates has help me create a DBA Operation Manual for my company. It also has a great chapter on when you start your first day as a DBA what to expect and what areas you should take iniative in to become a valuable team member.

Summary: Great Addition to Tech Book Library!
Review: This book is one that goes the extra mile to address working DBA issues. As a DBA manager I needed a book that went into subjects of hardware, data modeling, technical writing, and many others that you CAN'T find, especially in Book on line. The book is a must for DBA's to understand their complete role. The included CDROM is completely different than others, for it contains support documentation that has helped us define much of our needed standards, policies, and procedures.

I disagree with the two individuals who mentioned the Books online issue. Books on line does not discuss the complete role of a DBA, hardware skills, technical writing, what is expected of you when starting your position, interviewing for a DBA position or interviewing a DBA candidate, and much more.

The book is a must. Get it now!!

Summary: Understand the DBA role entirely!!
Review: This book was recommended to me from my new DBA manager. I have been a DBA for 3 years now and had no idea of what the complete SQL Server DBA role encompassed. Well, now I do! This book is very explanatory on the different areas that should be understood and what a DBA should be proficient in to be completely well-rounded in the DBA role. I am pursuing some additional training due to the tips given in this book and have already seen results in what I can offer as a DBA. My manager is happy and so am I!

I recommend this book very highly!!
