Rating: Summary: I don't reccommend this !! Review: I recommend using additional resources to help you pass the exam. A lot mistakes involving Servlet Thread-Safe Model.
Rating: Summary: Dangerous Book for Your Certification Review: I could not believe that the content of this book is not only of inferior quality, but also misleading you as certification candidates. Many concepts are presented flawed. For example, session variables are not thread safe! Some other concepts are explained blurry using terms that are not standard. It sounds to me that the authors and the editors really need to work on the content, word-by-word, to make this book at least worth for certification preparation book. I used Sybex's Study Guide for the Programmer Exam and found that book to be of high quality. But I am extremely disappointed with this book. I stopped using this book after reading 4 chapters and bought Hanumant Deshmukh's SCWCD Exam Study Kit (ISBN: 1-930110-59-6) and moved quickly to reading that book completely. With that book, I passed today the SCWCD exam with 94% score. For your background, I am a software professional with 5 years of high-level language experience.
Rating: Summary: comparative review Review: SCWCD Exam Study Kit by Deshmukh and Malvia, Manning press Excellent, and like the cover says- "will use it even after passing" Gives you everthing and more required to pass the exam. Only problem is remembering everthing and all the subltlties. Deffintiely read the book more than once. J2EE Web Componnet Develoepr Exam trainning guide by Alan Trottier, Que publication. Decent to good. though not as good as the "Deshmukh and Malvia", it explains areas that I found confusing from other books. Using only this book should give you a 50-50 chance of passing the exam. Java™ 2 Web Developer Certification Study Guide By Natalie Levi, Sybex press I was concerned by web opinion that this book would of detriment to my passing SCWCD. Well this book is good for a new certified programmer, or someone with little knowledge of JSP and Servlets. It provided a great introduction for me (a c programmer with a little java knowledge) to understand the required concepts and theory for web app development. you will not pass the exam only using this book
Rating: Summary: A good start - but many errors Review: This book seemed to be the next logical step after the excellent Complete Java 2 Certification Guide. And this book was a big help filling in the wholes of the things I was unaware of. But be warned, if you have no experience, you will be confused by the errors. There are plenty. Tag names are written to different ways in the same paragraph (<body-content> and <bodycontent> for example). Also some exam questions have the exact same answer twice. Some of the answers are just plain wrong. These test errors also occurr on the CD-ROM. If you catch these errors, you'll be fine on the exam. Otherwise, you may want to find another source to verify some of the text, or wait for a corrected edition. Good Luck.
Rating: Summary: what a waste of money and paper... Review: I would probably give zero stars to this edition due to the fact that it is riddled with errors. Sybex corrections have countless links to "detailed descriptions" from the book's errata page. All you really need are Servlet and JSP specifications and practice exams (which are available from several vendors). This book is such a waste...
Rating: Summary: Serious Bugs in this book Review: While the content of the printed book is OK, in general (some of it is worded in a very confusing manner), the companion CD is TERRIBLE. For someone studying for this certification exam, it is filled with many answers that are simply WRONG. If Sybex wants to be the source for certification material in the future, they better clean up their quality control. Disappointing.
Rating: Summary: good book Review: Just took and passed the exam, and this book was part of the reason. Every objective was covered and was easy to read, and I don't feel like I put a lot of effort in to the exam, either. I did purchase the SCWCD Exam Study Kit (Deshmukh and Malavia). I liked that book as well, but felt this one was a little easier to read.
Rating: Summary: Don't buy this book Review: 1. full of typo's 2. confusing explanation => Don't buy this book: worst book I've ever read !!! I recommend More Servlets and JavaServer Pages (from Marty Hall)
Rating: Summary: too many errors Review: Philip, do not ruin your reputation gained in the book "The Complete Java 2 Certification Study Guide: Programmer's and Developers Exams"!!! After reading this and other books, I have passed the exam. Here is my view of this book: 1 This book had too many errors. 2 A lot of concepts were not clearly explained. 3. The authors either did not understand these issues very well or they are in hurry to publish this book.
Rating: Summary: Unclear... I only lasted 3 chapters before switching Review: I found the organization of the concepts in the book difficult to follow. I also found the explainations verbose. The answers seemed to be designed for someone who has very little web experience and very little Java experience. If you are experienced in both, you might become irritated with the length of the answers. I also tried the exams on the CD. The wording of the questions was imprecise. One question on the sample exam started with "Which of the following options BEST defines..." and finished with "Choose all the apply". How many "best options" are there? I would recommend the "SCWCD Exam Study Kit: Java Web Component Developer Certification" by Manning. After three chapters in this book, I switched. I was very happy I did.
