Rating: Summary: author should show some responsibility Review: The book has a lot of errors as already pointed by other reviewers. To my future disappointment, the errata on the sybex website has some error too. Seems we need an errata of errata for page: 204, 160, 221, 282, 313, 332I am going to buy another SCWD book now.
Rating: Summary: This is the worst computer book I ever bought! Review: This book is full of errors, and is the worst computer book I ever bought! I don't know what contents inside the book to trust. I wish I have saw the similar comments given by others and bought the other books, such as that entitled as "SCWCD Exam Stdudy kit".
Rating: Summary: Needs a second edition - fast Review: I read and used the excellent "The Complete Java 2 Certification Study Guide: Programmer's and Developers Exams (With CD-ROM)" ISBN 0782128254, and it got a fully deserved 5 stars from me. The Java web developer certification is the next logical step for anyone interested in moving into the world of Enterprise Java. Philip Heller was involved in both books, however I must say that he has really let me down with this one after such great expectations. Not only is this book riddled with simple typos it also contains some very misleading errors. For someone like me who is new to the world of Servlets these mistakes can be DANGEROUSLY misleading. Some of the review questions give the wrong answers - a problem only just addressed in the newly updated errata page. Be prepared to spend a LONG time updating your book with all the corrections - there are many and somehow I think the list will grow. To compound these errors, the error I sent to sybex regarding the second paragraph on page 81 has recently been added to the errata page at sybex.com . However they still haven't got it right! The authors seem to be unsure whether GenericServlet is a class or an Interface. Last I heard it was a class! To summarise, while this book may be useful to give the reader a framework within which to study (at least it tells you the exam objectives) it needs to be complemented by the api doc (for corrections) and probably another book (for a better comprehension). I would recommend "More Servlets and JavaServer Pages" by Marty Hall which I am reading in conjunction with this book. There are just far too many errors in this book. Please bring out a second addition soon Philip! You owe it to your public who expected so much more!
Rating: Summary: Excellent book with a few errors Review: I'm not sure why so many people are slamming this book. I'm about half way through it and have found it to be a really good resource to have. I write Java web applications at my job, and feel that this book has really improved my coding as well as prepared me for the exam. I would say it is a must have as it is an easy read packed with valuable, well organized information. I don't usually leave reviews, but I felt the average ranking for this book was too low and wanted to bring it up to where it should be. 4 Stars.
Rating: Summary: What a shame... this could have been such a good book Review: Yes, the book is full of mistakes, many, many, many mistakes (both typos and logic type), but I have to admit I was still able to use it to pass the exam. If you're already familiar with JSPs and Servlets than the book can be a helpful aid in preparing for the exam as you will be able to spot the errors. If you're new to the topic, use other means (online forums, online mock exams, Servlet and JSP documentation, ...) along with this book or you'll be compromising your chance to pass the exam. The book is overpriced in comparison to its contents so buy a used one and get rid of it once you're done with the exam.
Rating: Summary: A good overview Review: I was pleased with the book even though there were a few errors (typo's and practice exams). It gave a good overview of what is on the test. I would recommend it. I just ordered the Manning book and will read that as well.
Rating: Summary: Is it that hard to be accurate? Review: A recent look at Sybex's errata page shows that they are tracking the errors as they come in. I think it would make sense to publish this book in soft copy. Some readers are happy to provide corrections if they don't have to pay first to do it. Where certification is concerned, mistakes just raise anxiety. I want to know what's correct, not what the author thinks might be correct and would verify if only there was time to check the facts. I hope Sybex is good on refunds.
Rating: Summary: Worthy purchase Review: I've read the entire book and was very surprised to see the type of comments posted. This book is good. The topics were explained well and the errors were mostly typos. You can go to the sybex correction sheet to see for yourself. I thought the authors did a great job explaining each topic and providing tables to help remember the terms. This is definately a good study guide.
Rating: Summary: Disappointed, this book poluted sybex's reputation Review: I waited for months and bought the book instantly after it was published. To my disappointment, this book is full of mistakes. (I am not talking about typing errors) The code samples seem written by people who don't understand Java at all. The books website only posted 4 errors. I feel the author hired some idiots to type the book for him, while he himself just gave the main ideas.
Rating: Summary: Too many mistakes Review: Just way too many mistakes. Don't use this book without having JavaDoc handy.
