Summary: Yes, it works for its purpose
Review: Yes, it does what it is supposed to do. I did a chapter a day, each chapter test, drilled the exams, re-read the book cover to cover the day before the test, took it and got a 76% - passed.

But also, it does have substantive typos and a few outright errors in the test engine questions and answers. While I don't excuse it, I want to point out that anyone who has worked with Java and has also taken, as required, the Java Programmer's exam and passed it, will have no trouble spotting the errata. But since this is a technical book, and since the mistakes were fairly obvious, it rates a 4 instead of a 5 star score from me.

Summary: Serious typos and errors
Review: I am very disappointed in this book. I got it right away, trusting to Heller's reputation for his excellent SCJP book, and the result is this disaster.

Typos appear every few pages. That's bad enough, but there are serious errors in virtually every chapter as well. For a regular text, that's bad enough, but for a certification guide that's a disaster.

A search for the book's web site turned up an extremely lengthy errata list, growing all the time.

I simply can't believe the editors allowed this book to make it to press in its current form.

Summary: It's Very Good For Certification Not Learning
Review: Hi all
i have heared so much about that book before buying it that it is full of errors and useless but really after buying it i can say it is the best book for the exam not for learning you have to learn first and then use the book to prepare for the exam not to start learning from the book so u will find in the begining of the book a test to direct u what is the missing with u so to read it.

Summary: Worse than no help at all!
Review: I found this book to be worse than having no study guide at all. The editing is so poor that I just became furious as I read it. The practice test questions are poorly worded and the answers given are often just plain wrong.

If I thought I could get a refund, I would return this book immediately.

Summary: Their must be a better book on the subject.
Review: This is a poorly structured book. You will find on many occasions the explainations are not complete and what is written is unclear. Their are often refrences to subject matter that has not yet been introduced or explained. Leaving the reader lost. If you are willing to struggle a bit and supplement this book with other material you will find it has some value but for $59... I dont think so. I will be returning my copy shortly.

Summary: A well written book with some errors
Review: This book is clearly written. I very much like the format of the book. I found it easier to read than most other computer books.

The book does contain errors, but at least the errata is available online.

It's a good reference for anyone interested in getting their SCWCD certification, as well as those looking for an all-purpose overview of servlets, JSP, and general Web development.

Summary: a complete waste
Review: This book is full of mistakes...not just typos, for which they've given an endless list at the book's website on sybex.com, but SERIOUS CONCEPTUAL mistakes. For example, at page 286 the author is trying to explain the thread safety of context parameters(???) where as the authors should have explained the thread safety of context attributes. Further, it says that context attributes are thread safe, which is WRONG.

This is just one...believe me, there are tons of such mistakes which can cost you your certifcation. This book deserves ZERO stars.

Summary: Not That Bad
Review: The book has contained many many errors as other readers said, but most of the errors are just typo error and will not affect the reader esp. those preparing for the exam.

Neglect those errors , the book can list and explain all the exam objectives precisely and present them in a appropriate order.

Recommand for those who already have knowledge on web, servlet and jsp. Not for beginner.

Summary: don't buy it
Review: this book is not well written and has so many errors. it will only waste your time and money.

Summary: Shoddy finish causes rejection
Review: You wouldn't accept delivery of a car which had marks and dents in it, would you? Even if it was the latest turbocharged model.
Even for a nice discounted price and excellent service from the distributor.

That's what we are being asked to do with this book.

It's hard enough trying to absorb all the new concepts that this book is teaching, the amount of errors is too distracting to make learning possible.

For now returned, maybe I'll reorder a much later printing or edition - if I still need it by then, I'll look for an alternative.
