Rating: Summary: A great companion book to his first one! Review: A great book to start reading when you're halfway or more through his first book. It stretches your Visual Basic mind muscle, widening and deepening your understanding of the language and controls, properties, and methods. I highlighted many examples in my copy, because I know I'll be coming back to them. The conversational style of this book is wonderful: instead of tech babble you get real world, to-the-point conversation about real world Visual Basic problems. This book's a winner!
Rating: Summary: Great Follow-Up Review: After going through the first book, "Learning to Program with Visual Basic" I decided to buy this one and just brush up. Well it helped more than I could have imaginged. I ended up seeing a couple of beginner problems I was having with my first program and found the solutions. This is an excellent follow-up to John's first book. I can't tell you how awesome this series is. I've bought 4 so far and am working the Visual Basic Databases. Great teacher, easy to understand. "Examples" is a great book for those pesky problems. Loved it!
Rating: Summary: Superb introduction to programming with Visual Basic Review: As a computer science graduate student, I have read many computer language books. Most of these books claim to be easy-to-understand and after looking at the graphically impressive book covers most of them come in, even I was fooled. As always the books end up as reference for only one or two points for the language. "Learn to Program with Visual Basic" is a different matter. Through clear, understandable exercises you find yourself soon at the end of the book with a functional, working and yes not so difficult to understand, program. It truely is the first computer book that I've read not browsed.
Rating: Summary: Very unique way of presenting problems ..... Review: Having read John Smiley's first book on Visual Basic 6, I was so impressed I bought this one as soon as I heard about it having read ZERO reviews. I hasten to add, I'm NOT dissapointed. It's a great technique Mr Smiley uses.... A live question and answer scenario with callers calling in with VB problems and Mr Smiley interjecting his own brand of humor ..... it work's for me. This book is filled with VB "gotchas", the kind of things that have you staring at the IDE for ages trying to figure out. Well done Mr SMiley - this is a great reference book, also, my compliments on the index content. The only reason I gave it 4 and not 5 stars is because you didn't include one problem I had..... Tsk Tsk........ 'A' rating from me :))
Rating: Summary: This Book Isn't Good Review: Hi, i got the book to enforce my knowledge about Vb and Databases. People PLEASE DO ME A FAV AND DON'T buy this book
Rating: Summary: Learning VB that is Easy and Fun Review: I admire the way Prof. Smiley, teaches us the art of programming using VB. I believe that this book in this format actually adds an additional interest to learning. Putting myself as a listener or viewer to the show, I actually found myself answering the questions with " how could you ask that question if you read his first book" or sometimes even worse commentary. I found that I learned some things that aren't mentioned in other books and I learned them without even knowing I learned it. I guess Professor Smiley has a precious gift, the ability to teach (what I believed to be difficult) material and make it fun and interesting. I strongly endorse this book for any beginner level or intermeditate level programer wanna be. You need this in your library! I only wish his TV show was actually aired!!!
Rating: Summary: I WOULD RATE IT "10 STARS". Review: I am just sitting and waiting for his next book to be published. This book is an exellent follow on for John Smileys first book "Learn To Program With Visual Basic". This is an execellent book to enrich your VB knowledge. I'm sure that nobody can meat or beat John. I read ALL VB books on the market, "JOHN'S 2 BOOKS ARE THE BEST, BEST, BEST"
Rating: Summary: Great concept. Many questions that I had. Review: I felt a little better that some of the same areas trip up other people. Professor Smiley lucidly explained each area and it all made sense. Not all VB books have the gift of clarity. His do.
Rating: Summary: This is the worst VB book you can buy! Review: I flipped through this book at the bookstore and I saw someexamples of problems that I have run into in the past, so I bought thebook. That was a big mistake. This book is supposed to be based on a TV talk show that doesn't exist, where the callers call in and ask questions. You could take the 485 pages of this book, rip out all the stupid fake dialogue and have a small FAQ but I wouldn't dare charge someone for that information. The book is awful. The writing is terrible. The concept is miserable. The questions are beyond easy. Leave this one on the bookshelf.
Rating: Summary: All Other Authors:PAY ATTENTION! Learn from this author! Review: I gave a five star rating to John Smiley'd first book (Learn To Program With Visual Basic 6 for Absolute Beginners) and another 5 star rating to this book, because John Smiley is the ONLY author I have found that truly addresses his books to an absolute beginner!
