Summary: Very Good One!
Review: IF you didn't buy this book you have to buy it now. There is nice tricks, in it. If you are new in VB like me, you'll enjoy it very much.

Summary: The best book yet for beginner/intermediate VB programmers.
Review: If you're not familiar with John Smiley's style of teaching than you're in for a treat! He uses a call-in cable TV show as a setting for 100 of the most common Visual Basic questions asked by beginner and intermediate users alike. This book is unlike any other that I've read on the subject. While many authors will try to cram as much info as possible into their book, Professor Smiley has a much more laid back approach. He explains the answers in easy-to-understand language without "talking down" to you or filling your head with a lot of jargon. The best that I can say about this book is that I've learned more from "VB 6 Examples" than I have with any other VB book that I've ever read. Highly Recommended!

Summary: Excellent Learning tool and reference book
Review: John Smiley has written a book about Visual Basic that anticipates and answers questioins that I have wanted to ask myself. Not only does he answer the question in terms and pictures that I can understand, but he often starts out each question explaining some of the terms that are in the question. This book also has a table of contents listing each question so it can be and is a useful reference book for later use. I obtained so much knowledge and skill from this book. Cannot wait for his next book. Excellent book for any level of programmer.

Summary: Learn to program with visual basic examples
Review: Just wanted to take a moment to say I have all of Mr. Smiley's books. I have yet to say thanks to Mr. Smiley. These books are written in a manner that relaxes on while reading. He has a program (the China shop) that you follow along with throughout his series. This book (Examples) is the exception to that series. Mr. Smiley does a dialog as if he is on a TV show where he will answer caller's questions. I am working on several programs for my college and I can not tell you how many time I have used this book as a reference. It answers many common sense questions. If you are a beginner, get this book. Thanks, for your effort John.

Summary: Execellent and Informative
Review: Many times I wish there were books that gave various examples of what a typical programmer encounters. Examples are many times small independent programs. I like the ability to do each example independly. When I have only a few minutes I can look up an example and do it. They can be written and debugged very quickly. I am always on the lookout for examples on various subjects. I wish there were more books written in this format to assist progammers. The examples in this book are common to most new programmers. Professor Smiley's presentation is outstanding and it makes you feel as though you were part of the TV audiance. Well written and presented.

I have taken Learn to Program With Visual Basic 5 parts 1 and 2, and enjoyed both courses. Looking forward to taking more of his classes through ZDU.

I am also looking forward to Professor Smiley's new book due out in August about databases.

Summary: Don't write your first VB program without reading this book!
Review: Picture this...

You've just read an introductory book on Visual Basic (hopefully mine!), and you're starting work on your very first Visual Basic program.

A little bit into the process, and you realize that you'd like to change the Color of a button on your form. You change the BackColor property, but nothing happens!

Or...

It's your first day of work at your new Visual Basic programming job, and your new boss casually mentions that you should change the mouse pointer when the user moves the mouse over a disabled checkbox!

Or...

You send a friend the Visual Basic program you've just written, but when they run it all they see are error messages about missing DLL's.

In all three of these cases, you can search through your Visual Basic documentation, you can check out online help, you can search the newsgroups, even call Microsoft but...

You can get the answers to these questions, and 97 others, quickly, painlessly, and enjoyably in my new book.

The 100 questions that I answer in this book are the 100 questions that beginner Visual Basic programmers have asked me over the course of the last 5 years of teaching Visual Basic. Even if you've been programming in Visual Basic for a while, I know that you'll still find this book useful

I can guarantee you that as soon as you start to write a Visual Basic program of your own, you'll be asking one of these questions yourself.

And for those of you who read my first book, Learn to Program with Visual Basic, I can guarantee you that this is not just another dry question and answer book. You'll be entertained as well!

Summary: This book was the turning point in my studies
Review: Simple to follow and examples of how newbies would do
something (that didn't work) and what was wrong, and then an example of it
done correct...

This book finally made things click...
REALLY 'THE TURNING POINT' in my self-studies!

Written as if it were a detailed record of a call-in Visual Basic help show.

I suggest those trying to learn VB get this and all of John Smiley's books on the subject (I own them all!)

Tony!

Summary: John Smiley's Learn toProgram with Visual Basic 6 Examples
Review: SMILEY'S book is an excellant learning tool. His colloquial style provides a learning alternative that is free of cumbersome and sometimes unnecessary technical terminologies. Clearly, John is more than a professional programmer who decided to write a book, he is a teacher providing technical information in a fashion that creates a positive learning environment for everyone. There are no bits of information showing up that has not been previously explained. SMILEY'S is a step by step teaching method designed for successful learning. Thankyou for that..

Summary: The book was ok
Review: Some useful information. My complaint is it took so long for the publisher to ship the books out.

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: Don't bother
Review: The book is basically a dialogue from the author's class on visual basic databases. I found this writing style to be very annoying and not easy to follow. The whole book is centered around one project and presents a narrow viewpoint rather than the more comprehensive approach to database design I was looking for.
