Summary: Best ActionScript book on the market
Review: Gary Rosenzweig's _ActionScript for Fun and Games_ is hands down the most clear, concise, easy to understand, and well written programming book I have ever read. I can not recommend it highly enough. Rosenzweig's style takes the best aspects of the "Dummies" books (clarity and humor) and combines it with the level of depth and detail you expect from a reference book. For the first time programmer, he breaks down every line of code into its component parts and explains what each part does and why. For the more advanced programmer, his layout and organization allows you to go to exactly the section you need without skimming through introductory material first. Whether you are totally new to ActionScript or an advanced Flash programmer, this book belongs on your shelf.

Summary: From actionscript novice to flash games designer in 5 days!
Review: Having mastered flash basics - this was the first Actionscript book I bought. It's nice to get straight into making cool programmes instead of having to master hundreds of commands first. Gary explains actionscript in a really easy to understand way and you end up with some really good programmes that you will probably use again and again. 5 days later I'm churning out work like I've been using Flash all my life. Thanks Gary!

Summary: Flash Action Script
Review: I am a digital artist and one of the things I love about digital art is the relative ease with which I can apply it to other projects. I have long had an idea to do a simple game using some of my online art as a way of generating interest and traffic to my homepage. However, not being a programmer, I lacked the foundation to bring this idea to fruition. I had some simple computer science back in high school, but that was so far back that there was no comparison. I had been learning Flash on my own though and realized there was the power there to use, if I could only figure out ActionScript.

Then I found Mr. Rosenzweig's book!!! The grail for my need! Amazing stuff! I read the entire book over three days while on a business trip. His language and examples are clear and informative. His approach to introducing the non-programmer (myself) to the baffling world of computer languages was reassuring and encouraging. Yes, all I essentially did was cut n' paste his code into my project, but I felt very confident tweaking areas of it to custom fit my needs because I had been given a thorough grounding in all the arcane bits n' pieces by his book.

I am already thinking ahead to games I can make for my children and other projects to design for my website to add continued interest to it. In addition, I can see extreme value for some of his copyright protections to add to my Flash animations as well as extra things I can do to optimize my existing work. I have no aspirations to be a Flash artist, but it never hurts to dazzle a prospective client either ;)

Summary: the flash instruction cuts to the chase
Review: I am honestly learning more about the program in general, and actionscript, by working with the examples in this book. It reads well and it explains how things work so we can all get it in our head right, remember it, and apply it to new ideas of our own! There is great advice on how to build more efficient flash pieces also.

Summary: If you want to build games, this is the book for you...
Review: I am not a programmer by any means, but wanted to delve further into Flash and learn some actionscripting with the goal of creating some web based games. I have alway been a game addict (since the early 80's) and as a result of reading this book, have been able to recreate some of my favorites as well as produce some originals, quickly and easily. The book made it a breeze! It is an easy read and it starts off my giving you an overview of the basic actionscripting you will need to know in pursuit of game building. It then continues by covering just about every standard type of game you can imagine (shooting, catch and avoid, pong type, puzzle, etc.)! It was a thrill to be able to build these games with such ease. ...

Summary: You will make games in Flash with this book!
Review: I am not a programmer. I use Flash to make cartoons and animations. I would like to improve and learn more about Flash and try making some Flash games. For me, the next step is getting a handle on Actionscript. That's why I bought this book.

You will learn to make and then make games in Flash with this book. It is worth the money and then some. There is a reason most people rate this book highly. You don't have to be an experienced programmer at all; you just have to know the basics for Flash. His explanations are clear. The format is easy to read. This will be a book that is used as a reference after you read it, rather than just sitting on your bookshelf.

I had a question and emailed the author, and he emailed me back a couple days later. That was nice. The book doesn't come with a cd, but you can download all the files from his website. The files are all manageable, even if you are using a 56k modem or less. Someone else who reviewed this book expressed problems downloading the files. I did not. It was easy and the book is fully supported.

The book is full of code explanations. The beginning of the book is full of practical actionscript lessons to get non programmers up to speed. It's a good read, and doesn't have to be read cover to cover. You can jump around concentrating on the types of games that interest you.

Again, this book is full value. Too many Flash books out there are overpriced and sit on the shelf after reading them once. This one bucks the trend. 5 stars.

Summary: Good book
Review: I bought this book after flash mx was released, so I spent a great deal of time rewriting the code from this book to be more "mx-like". Such as having the code more centralized and creating clips instead of duplicating. If you stick to the flash 5 ways of doing things, this is a great book...however, some of the techniques in this book are now considered bad technique with MX. As far as gaming goes, this book is really good. Just wish I waited on the mx version!
