Summary: Pretty good
Review: This biook is good and I give it 4 stars. I didn't see the first version like some other people so I can't compare the two but I think this version is good but I give it only 4 stars because it should have more newbee-style info.

Summary: Good Eye-opener, But CD should have the references
Review: I am relatively new to the security arena, and as such, learned quite a few things from this book. I have the first edition also, and this book just got better with a little polishing. My major gripe--- Rather than commercial demos, fill the CD w/ the myriad referenced documents in html form w/ a searchable index.

Summary: Not bad.
Review: This book is a nice overview for beginners, but they'll need to go on for more information if they really want to know anything. It would be nice if they followed it up with a more advanced book detailing the things the author avoided here. All in all, it was worth reading, unless you knew all the information beforehand.

On a side note, I'm curious about the "secret message" in Appendix C. The 3rd field has been found (it's 11:34), but I still know of no one who's cracked it. I also suspect that the 1st field is Kbps, but I would like confirmation. Anyone who finds out, please tell me.

Summary: Excellent Resource
Review: I've seen some very bad reviews for this book and I don't understand why. While the first edition was longer on discussion of techniques, this book is a far more complete reference work. I'm sorry, but when I purchase a book I want my money's worth. This version of "Maximum Security" gave me much more information and many more leads than any competing book on the market. I think it's a great effort and it was definitely worth my money.

Summary: My Fav. Book
Review: I dont really understand what some of the comments below are about. The first edition of this book is widely said to be the best computer security / hacking book ever written. From the parts of the second version Ive seen, it is even better than the first edition. At least, it is up to the minute up to date.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Computer Security as the best and main book you will need. My one concern regarding the book is that many parts of it seem to be thinly veiled 'hacking instructions'. Part of the books popularity, no doubt, is that it is seen as the 'hackers textbook', and by blindly following the steps in the book it would even be simple for my grandma to break into many servers. I suggest sysadmins have a read through this book as soon as possible, and filling in any server holes the book describes. Try to beat those who would be applying the book with more malicious intent towards your server.

Summary: Anonymous is not a hacker...
Review: This book does not worth the money i payed for. Anyone can write a book about computers and internet security and put in 1000 urls and 1000 computer books and tell you to turn to those resources. I so this title and all the reviews that gave it 5 stars and i thought.. "Cool, This is a book that will help me improve my technics!!!" Well gess what? This book is worthless. Don't make the same mistake i did. Don't buy this book. Buy practical unix & internet security or firewalls and internet security.

Summary: Total Waste of money. 800+ pages on nothing (0 stars)
Review: This is without a doubt the worst computer related book I have purchased. The author points out basic security issues and refers you to web pages to learn more. His section on cracking the root password is not even a page long- when this is one of system admins biggest concerns. If you are a system admin you'll learn nothing and if you aren't, not much more. The whole hacker motif of the title bothers me to. Whoever wrote this most likely neither a hacker or a cracker. If he is, he's either bad or been censored a lot. The latter would be ridiculous, because simple UNIX or 95 books provide more info that this book. Get technical!@!

Summary: Excelent, but as good as the first?
Review: Once again the anonymous author brings some intricate security flaws to light with a clarity that cators to the novice programmer and admin a like. While this edition is full of usefull information and techniques, it lacks the straight method of attack described in the first edition. I found that this book also makes much more referances to web links than actually describing the various aspects of the the system. I would like to know how other admins who have read both editions would compare the two, send me an e-mail.
