Summary: "Anonymous" finally kicks some major booty
Review: I got the first edition and it was just so-so. This book rocks! If you're looking for a no-nonsense security book and you can only afford one, this is it. Steal it if you have to. Well...maybe not steal it, but get it, anyway. :-)

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Well written and full of useful information
Review: I'm relatively new to computer security issues, but this book covered almost everything. What the author wasn't able to cover in the book, he provided extensive on-line references and plenty of useful programs to experiment with. Maximum Security provided an extensive overview and has given me a starting point to learn more about computer security issues.

Summary: New Edition of a Unique, Controversial Book!
Review: This new edition of the #1 computer security bestseller is designed for anyone who needs to find out how to protect their computers, networks, and Internet sites from unauthorized intrusions. Written by a convicted hacker -- someone who knows which systems are vulnerable and how crackers get into them -- this unique guide to Internet and network security identifies the security holes and faults inherent in wide variety of computer systems and networks, and then describes how to go about fixing them.

A sampling of the acclaim for Maximum Security:

"Required reading for any system administrator or manager. Batten down your system's hatches with security tips and tricks written from a hacker's perspective." --Rich Schwerin, PC Computing

"Maximum Security serves up a very thorough tutorial on the programs and techniques behind Internet hacking... it also provides a wake-up call for Web site administrators. By getting an honest appraisal of what many utilities are capable of doing to certain platforms and network configurations, Webmasters will better understand how to protect their network, or how to determine when and where security breaches occurred." --Ben Elgin, ZDNet Whole Web Catalog

"This book covers in copious detail Internet warfare, programming languages, scanners, sniffers, password crackers, trojans, platform security, remote attacks, spoofing, firewalls, and the law. It is a how-to protect book and, by default, a how-to attack book." --Library Journal

"Want to learn how to breach a server? Find kits that generate virus code? Hide your identity in cyberspace? Would-be hackers typically turn to underground journals or cracker Web sites for such tricks and tips. But now a mainstream publisher has a book filled with such advice. Aimed at systems administrators, Maximum Security... has sparked another round of debate about how much security information should be disseminated to the general public." --Sharon Machlis, Computerworld

"If you need to worry about securing your site (and who doesn't?), this is a worthwhile purchase and a worthwhile read.... There is almost 200 pages of hacker tool information -- reason enough to buy the book, unless you want to do the research yourself, and all but one chapter has additional resources listed at the end." --Bob Bruen, Cipher - Newsletter of the IEEE Technical Committee on Security and Privacy

Summary: A MUST for any administrator's bookshelf
Review: This book has nearly 1000 web links to more detailed information on specific topics ... pick ANY 20 of these links, and you've just got your money's worth - tenfold.

It is certainly legitimate to say that this book AIDS the cracker-wannabe. But NOT ONCE in this book does the author point out a cracker scheme WITHOUT countering it with common-sense protection OR "counter-terrorism" software.

To the administrator's out there who choose to ignore the warnings of this book -- I equate you with unknowing-yet-naive consumers who blindly buy the first Brooklyn Bridge offered to them [in other words, the consumers who DESERVE to be conned], by believing the ludricous claims by the salsmen wearing cheap leisure suits: if you shun this author's wake-up call, your system WILL be compromised !!

This book is certainly NOT the most technical book on information security on the market -- but it does not claim to be (DOZENS of times the author point the reader to links on the web for more detailed info); and you can BET that this book will be the choice text of would-be crackers (who can get this info elsewhere, albeit not so easy-to-understand).

Do the math ... be the judge for yourself ... if you STILL aren't convinced, you'll never learn.

(By the way: this book deserves 5 stars ... I just gave it one star to get your attention) ....

Summary: The Best Computer Security / Hacking book out
Review: I know a lot of people buy this book because to teach themselves hacking, which it does really well. If this book is anywhere near as good as the first edition, then it will also become the central book in any computer security nut or 'hackers' library.

If you read through the book carefully, you will learn about the security and breaking in to any of the major systems out there. A dangerous book if in the wrong hands, as it practially shows you step by step how to break into computer systems, but I also suggest all sysadmins read the book to learn how to protect your system. If you are into any of this stuff, this book would probably be the main book in any hackers library. With the updated edition just out... its probably time for sysadmins to quake in their boots!

Summary: The most phenomenal book in the market
Review: I purchased "Maximum Security I" and could not wait to get my hands on "Maximum Security II" . It is finally awesome to see that there is an author out there than can explain things in a way so an average human being can understand. Most authors of computer books write them in a way that the author assumes you are either a Cyborg or the Hal 2000 from 2001 a Space Odyssey. I find the second version of this book to me better than the first. If you are looking for a book that you can understand, this is the one for you.

Summary: Anonymous strikes out
Review: An odd sequel to Anonymous' previous novels: "My Secret Life : An Erotic Diary of Victorian London" and "The Autobiography of a Flea and Other Tart Tales". "Maximum Security" is written in a fashion suitable for reference material, but without wit, humor, or intelligence. The literary style drags the subject to a standstill and weakly supports the tenet that experiencing someone else's fear of the unknown is worth more than the price of a paperback.

Summary: definately get you off to a nice start
Review: Let me stress a serious point: H4cK1nG is not a thing, just as art, math, and science are not things. For newbies who have asked "how do i hack," read this book! You'll understand the CONCEPTS and IDEAS behind hacking and network security in general. Asking how do i hack is like asking how do i do art. There is no set definition of hacking (if there were, there'd only be one book and text on it w/ explicit directions, and Sys Adm. jobs would be a lot easier!) So get this book, less ye be flamed from asking stupid 1@m3r questions! ---j++

Summary: Great Book
Review: I am fairly practiced in network security, and have read many books, and text files on the internet. This book is not only a great place to start for a hacker, or network administrator, but is also a good book for reference for the more mature specialists. I can not express the greatness of this book.
