Summary: Author Comments
Review: I just wanted to take the to time share a few helpful things about this book.

First and foremost you need to know there was a contributing author, Steve Wilkinson (wilkie@concentric.net). He single-handedly completed Chapters 9 and 14. He did a very good job and will hopefully write a complete book in the future.

You should also know the location of the book's source code. Once you are on the site select product support and enter the book's ISBN. This should redirect you to the source.

Lastly, I hope you enjoy the book. Please feel free to send me your comments and suggestions.

Summary: Great Book For All Aspects of Servlets Uses with HTML
Review: I needed a book to get me quickly up to speed with Java servlets. This book is outstanding. It's very clearly written with concise examples illustrating many of the common uses of servlets including JDBC (which is why I needed it) and many others. If you are trying to use Java servlets in an HTML application, this is the book for you. You should be slightly familiar with Java though. If you are familiar with Java you will be cranking out servlets on your first day with this book. Hats off to James Goodwill.

Summary: Best Book on Servlets and OOP development on WEB
Review: I received this book yesterday and already read half of it, even with rewriting the samles. What can i say, "It is amazing." IF you develop on the Web this book will make you twice as powerfull as you used to be. No more need to depend on Microsoft tools or worry about browser incompatibility. Helped me to design a custom <Table> that implements grouping for reporting purposes. If you programmed only in VB before, this book with really help you to understand why ABSTRACT classes are necessary and how to implement a good Object Model.

Summary: This book gives you a roadmap to servlets
Review: I was completely lost when I was asked to start writing servlets. I had the O'Reilly Java Servlet Programming book, but it was not exactly what I was looking for. I bought this book because each chapter was a "lesson" on servlets. I liked the clear and simple descriptions and the example code snippets. After reading this book, I had a roadmap of what I wanted to look for in the other servlet book. This is a great book for beginning servlet programmers who know a little bit of Java.

Summary: Quick guide to the server-side
Review: I was pleased to learn so quickly about server-side Java. This book is called servlets but also handles interesting topics like JSP, RMI and Corba. Those topics are very brief, though. Otherwise this book would have been ten times the size.

It does have mistakes that only attentive readers might catch. It was a bit annoying that all these re-usable components were explained, Chpater 4 about the HTML Objects could be completely skipped without harm. A CD-rom containing this code could be handy. Perhaps they can do so when re-printing.

I quickly learned to make servlets so it's a good book for it. It does require you to have some expertise in Java, but if you want to write servlets then you should already have that.

Summary: A Waste of Money (sorry for the spelling)
Review: I wish there were a "no star" or "half star" rating.

Doesn't cover JSP. Too abstract, not enough information. Returned it immediately. The author sure gives it a shot and has heart, just not the same experience as in other books.

I recommend "Java Servlet Programming" (can't go wrong with O'Reilly although this is somewhat out of date) and I was recently pleasantly surprised to find "Professional Java Server Programming" which covers a little of JINI (very well the next wave of replacement for J2EE, etc.)

I'll admit I have always found O'Reilly books to be better than WROX (sp?), but this is rapidly changing. Could O'Reilly be falling behind?

Whatever you don't buy this book, either of the other two are well worth the additional money.

Summary: A Good Starter For Beginners
Review: If u r new to the world of Servlets u will find this book pretty useful in learning the basics but don't expect much out of it if u r a professional servlet programmer and want something advanced. there are a few bugs in the book which are highly irritating... first is that there are umpteen instances when James asks u to download the source code from the web site but apparently he has forgotten to include the web site's address! and jsp and rmi stuff given in the book is just a reproduction of the sun's tutorial on these topics and the book does not tell u much abt running the jsp files. these things apart if u r newly into servlets, u will feel the amazing power and robustness of servlets in comparison to cgi scripts. My rating is if u r new to servlets this book is just the right thing to put u on course but if u r a professional programmer, well...

Summary: This book is OK
Review: If ur gonna start about Servlets, this is the not the good one to start.. Book like Inside Servlets by Callaway is a better one..

If you have experience in working with servlets, this is the one ur looking for..

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: Covers servlets basic very well (specifically jsdk2.0)
Review: If you are new to servlets, this book will certainly help you understand the power of servlets. I do not recommend this book to those who are looking for some advanced examples or some examples specific to servlets v2.1.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Rapid Introduction to Servlets - Good book for good price
Review: It is a pretty good book on Java Servlets and also include other server side Java concepts. Be aware, this book is useful only if U know java programming concepts and wanted to learn Java Servlets and ofcourse, the book is intended for the same. Author, introduced all basic/important servlet programming concepts very clearly/briefly with simple, easy to understand examples and this book can be used for fast track learning. The price is also very less and I am sure U won't repend for buying this book.
