Rating: Summary: Great servlet book! Review: It was refreshing to find a book so useful. Of all my technicalbooks so far, this one is by far the most valuable in terms of its thoroughness and general format. The examples are highly useful and applicable to real world situations. A little added incentive is that the author will answer questions. This is an invaluable bonus. The fact that there isn't a source code CD doesn't bother me since this is the most inexpensive yet useful book I have to date. I will pass on the CD if it means I have to spend $20 more on the book.
Rating: Summary: Simply Brilliant ! Review: James has written a masterpiece. You don't have to look any further for a Servlet book. This book has the perfect balance of concepts, content & examples. Waiting for more books from James Goodwill !
Rating: Summary: Much better than other books on the subject. Review: The content is rich compared to previous offerings from this author. Mr. Goodwill gives a thorough treatment of all aspects of servlet design/development. Congratulations. Can't wait to see the next book
Rating: Summary: Primer? Maybe. Reference? No Way Review: There are two polarized schools of thought in the customer reviews of this book. Most say 'its the best' while a few of us say 'waste of time'. My read is that its a decent into to servlets for novices. But it is ultimately insufficient for anyone doing serious proffessional servlet work. The table of contents covers almost all the bases you'd want a servlet book to cover. But it gets increasingly shallow as you get into it. And the examples just don't cut it. Bottom line: its not a bad first taste of servlets for novices. But if you do servlets proffessionally, this is a light read. Expect to need another reference text.
Rating: Summary: A great practical book on Java servlets Review: This a pretty good book on Java servlets. Each chapter defines concisely what the topic is and then provides sample (working) code. It won't take you too long to master the basics of Java servlets. Each chapter is kept short and focused on a specific topic. You can quickly browse the book to see which chapter you are interested in and invest time accordingly. The best book I have in hand!
Rating: Summary: the definative servlet book Review: this book describes servlets, how they replace traditional cgi programs, from basic functionality to session based state management. the book is written in a clear manner with good practical examples. this is not a reference book, that is what the API docs are for. This is a book on implementing solutions with the servlet API.
Rating: Summary: Excellent primer and reference Review: This book does a good job of teaching you servlets. Each chapter's snippets of code are useful as a reference on their own; The pseudo e-commerce example at the end of the book helps tie everything together. I would have liked to have seen more information on JSP, but the fact that the author personally responded to a JSP question I had sums up the quality of this book.
Rating: Summary: This book is horrible Review: This book has so many things wrong with it I don't even know where to begin. First it starts off by introducing two possible web servers you can use (Java Webserver or JRun add-on) and that he will be referring to both of these throughout the book. Later it becomes apparent he has abandoned JRun entirely. Also found numerous errors in the sample code I downloaded from their website - which was NOT HELPFULL at all. Nothing is worse than a book with faulty sample code. Not to mention the numerous typos and grammatical errors. THIS BOOK IS HORRIBLE - DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY.
Rating: Summary: Excellent, fast paced reference Review: This book is a fantastic reference, that allows you to skip from topic to topic at your lesuire. Really good. Only drawback is code must be downloaded from publisher's site.
Rating: Summary: Learning Servlets? Look no further..... Review: This book is by far the best informative book on the subject. It is easy to follow, and takes you on a logical path. On top of that, James was great at answering particular questions I had on certain topics. Can't wait for his second book!
