Summary: Book works for busy MCSD candidates
Review: I passed BOTH the 70-175 and 70-176 on the first try (with HIGH scores). These were the last exams to complete my MCSD. Although I have many years experience in VB, as most of us know, we can't know everything about everything. This book helps fill in the cracks as well as a refresher on details known, but forgotten.

A lot of MCSD candidates are very busy these days. This book covers what needs to be covered and ignores what needs to be ignored.

While not perfect, it is one of the best in its class. It does what it was designed to do, teach you enough to pass the exam - IF you have some experience behind the reading to attach the information to.

Summary: Buy this Book and Transcender Exams
Review: I took the 70-176 exam yesterday and passed on my first try. I purchased the Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 Development Mastering series and this book. This book was far superior. It provided all of the information that I needed to better understand the material for the exam.

This book had quite a few mistakes and the author could have included the exercises on the CD. However, if taking exams makes you extremely nervous, I would recommend the Transcender exams and this book. The Transcender exams are very close to the real thing. In fact, most of the questions on the exam resembled questions on Transcender practice exams. Transcender also provided complete detailed explanations of the topics and MSDN references. [....] Buy this book! It will provide a great reference for later on.

Summary: The ONLY Book you need
Review: I just passed 70-176 with a 900 using nothing by my experience and this book. The review questions (both in the book and on the CD) are a great aid and the Fast Facts section gives an awesome synopsis of what you'll see on the exam. The information is concise enough to not make for a heavy read, but is in-depth enough to teach you if you have little or no experience with a particular area. There are some typos, but as other reviewers point out, so does every tech book. If you don't want to waste a lot of time and money, buy this book.

Summary: MCSD Desktop VB6.0 exam
Review: I actually picked up another book that was a Microsoft Certified Study guide from Sybex and it was brutal. I would have failed the exam if that was my only source of reference for some of the topics. I'm glad I read these reviews and purchased this book as it turned out to be my only good study source, and I passed the exam no problems. The Desktop exam is covered great in this book for VB6.0. I even found alot of similar questions on the exam as what was in the Exam Questions section of this book for each chapter. With some previous VB programming experience and this book, your chances of passing the test are good.

Summary: Another Hawhee winner
Review: I used Howard's VB5 Exam book to prep for that exam a few years ago and it was wonderful. So there was no doubt that I would get his book for VB6. I passed both VB6 exams with plenty of room to spare. The few typos do not detract from this book, I haven't found a book w/o typos yet. As before the only tools you really need are Hawhee's book and Transcender exams. Used together and you will pass. You will find similar comments from other reviewers below. Good luck!

Summary: This is one of the better books for these exams
Review: This book covers well in some areas, such as creating data access and creating user interface. It provides not only the explaination, but also detailed screen shots and examples for those areas. But it does not have enough information for deploying, maintaining and supporting an application. For example, it only has a small section talking about DCOM configuration, and did not go into detail for configuration COM on win95 client (which showed up couple times on the exam I took).

Overall, this is one of the better test prep books on the market. It is a must have, but you will need additional materials for passing with a better grade.

Summary: Very Good Content But Some Impossible Exercises
Review: Okay, this may seem trivial to the more advanced users, but the exercises in this book are deadly. They give the briefest of instructions and have no corresponding text on the CD! I mean, would it have killed the author to include the code so the reader can check his or her work? There were hundreds of megs of free space, but alas, no code to check your work! Forget the website, and e-mailing the tech support address at the site resulted in an automated response sent two days later! Arrrrggggghhhh! I dare someone of intermediate or lesser skill level to complete Exercise 4 without flinging the book out the nearest window! Good luck!

Summary: Not perfect, but still the best
Review: I almost stayed away from this book because of all the warnings about excessive typos. And they are there, but to me it really didn't detract much from the excellent teaching method consistent throughout most of the book. Having looked at quite a few others, I'd say this is the one to go with for the desktop exam. (I passed yesterday using this, Transcenders, and some of Exam Cram). You will definitely need to supplement this book with other materials (Transcenders is worth the high price) but I don't know what I would have done without Hawhee as my core reading. I hold back from giving it 5 stars only because of inadequate coverage of P&D Wizard. (Nobody else covers it well either. Everyone just walks you through it, but the test wants fairly extensive knowledge of the separate files.) All in all, however, I think if you're taking 70-176, Hawhee is superb, a must have.

Summary: Excellent Source of VB Knowledge
Review: After reading a couple of different VB 6.0 Exam preparation books, this book is by far the best. It is very easy to read and understand, and best of all, provides many examples of the topics being presented. If you carefully study all the topics in the book in detail, you will easily pass the exams. The practice exams on the CD-ROM are actually harder than the real exams. I used this book and one other source (plus working with the language for a few years) and scored 946!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Excellent book for test and for reference
Review: I read 3 books to pass both tests and got more out of this one than the other 2 together. Explained in detail and walked you through each step. Easy reading with a lot of meat!
