Summary: A book this Web designer highly recommends!
Review: If you have ever wanted to learn JavaScript or build your existing JavaScript skills, this is the book to do it. The book is very well written, both in structural layout and and how the content is covered. I had tried several other JavaScript books, including the Visual QuickStart (did not like), and those books were not able to convey their lessons as well as Goodman. My only complaint is that the book is outdated as far as browsers are concerned (it focuses on Netscape 4.x).

Summary: The CD-ROM examples do not work.
Review: I cannot believe how many good reviews there are for this book. How are you people learning the material seeing as most of the programs in the book do not work? That is the worst thing a programming book can do in my opinion. The writer suggests programming practices he does not follow. Most of the programs don't contain the proper syntax and you'll spend a lot of time fixing that. A better book to use is JavaScript 1.3 in 24 hrs. Good luck!

Summary: Really close to being a bible!
Review: This has been the most indispensable book that I have owned on Javascript for the past one and half years! This book has every tiny detail that I sometimes forget. Differences between Netscape and IE are pointed out and tips and tricks on getting around common problems are a great time saver. This book shas been well-written to target the wide audience spectrum from the beginner to the accomplished.

Summary: I don't know what book everyone else was reading but...
Review: this book as someone else already stated 'sucks'. If you've got time to waste reading through this guy's twaddle more power to you. The examples are poorly presented. Mr. Goodman, the author, seems to enjoy burying useful information within his long explanations of extraneous data.

This guy does an excellent job of blending together a lot of concepts (sometimes unrelated to the current discussion) and then burying the core concept he's discussing! Unbelievable.

If you are still thinking about buying this book, do yourself a favor, when you're at the book store look in the index or table of contents of this book and then go to the page and read the authors discussion/explanation. Read it carefully, if you don't fully understand the concept then look for a reference to what you don't understand in the book keep doing this until you fully understand the concept you were originally interested in. Once you've done that if the time it took you to *fully* understand the concept was acceptable by all means buy the book, but if you're like me you'll find the time invested in finding useful information in this book is unacceptable.

FYI- I've read a lot of computer books in my life this ranks right up there with the worst, a five star waste of time.

Summary: Good Book for the Intermediate Programmer
Review: This book is a very good reference book for the intermediate programmer. If you are new to the world of javascripting or are just lazy and want to copy scripts then this is not the book for you. If you are serious about Javascript and programming then this is an excellent resource.

This book is detailed and will take some time to read and learn. As any "programming", it is not learned overnight or even in 21 days if you fully want to use code.

Summary: Sorry but this book Sucks!
Review: We're using this in my JavaScript class now and it's the worst book to learn from. Goodman doesn't explain well and when he is explaining he goes on about things not really relevant. The book could have used a really good editor or ghost WRITER. Goodman is certainly no writer. If I could've I'd have given this book a minus 1 stars!

Summary: Review of the "JavaScript Bible."
Review: I believe that the "JavaScript Bible" is flat out the best book on the market for JavaScript. The first twelve chapters teach the language, as well as I have ever seen it taught. The book goes right straight to the Document Object Module, the nitty gritty. The tutorial section is well written. So much so, that I believe someone with limited programming experience would be able to pick up the book and learn JavaScript - it would take some hard work, but it could be done. The rest of the book is the best reference I have seen for JavaScript - but the author never stops teaching how to use the language. He just goes into more depth. The result is that the book is double barreled: you get a "how-to-do" the programming reference, as well as a reference for the language. My only negative comment is that the book is built around the Netscape DOM. I would have liked to have seen a little more information about Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Summary: I use this book a lot
Review: With a couple of hours of HTML, this book (ed 3) is immediately useful. I have now been using it for about a year which speaks for itself. It is good as an HTML supplement too. I liked the examples many of which helped my real world 'on the job' needs. eg. field edits. Compatability notes for each command were useful as were the work arounds for older IE and Netscape browsers. Also introduced me to Javascript debugger - a very useful tool. Good index. Down Side? A little out of date now. I needed other sources for Style Sheets (HTML) and Layers and the IE equivalent. This is still the best book I have on Javascript.

Summary: Solid way to learn JavaScript
Review: I purchased this book with the intent on learning JavaScript. This book does a more than adequate job of doing that. It gives pretty good examples and most of them actually work. I would suggest this book if you want an understanding of JavaScript, and some decent examples to use in real life situations.

Summary: Simplistic; Poor Reference
Review: Judging from all of the positive reviews here, this book must have its place. However, as an experienced VB programmer, I was looking for a tutorial AND reference. The tutorial is rather simplistic and focuses primarily on Netscape, a browser which is quickly becoming the minority. My biggest gripe though, is the lack of any sort of command reference. For me, a good reference is as important to the learning process as a clearly written tutorial.
