Rating: Summary: An excellent all around guide... Review: I went into Javascript knowing only some BASIC and a lot of rudimentary HTML. This book presented the topics in an easy to understand manner. After the first 6-7 chapters, I had a great grip on Javascript, enough to program some very nice features into my pages. The rest of the book serves mainly as a reference because of the extensive and complex detail it explores. It's a great well rounded, complete guide to Javascript and I found no other resources necessary to learn the simple language...
Rating: Summary: WOW! Totally Awesome! Review: As an ASP developer for the web, I have searched for ANY book that could help me learn Javascript FAST. All the other books were mere incomplete references. This book rocks! Its a tutorial/reference that guides you through numerous implementation examples, things to look out for, browser type/version work-arounds, and other possiblities to expand the functionality of the scripts. Plenty of example code and down-to-earth explanations. A powerhouse and a "must have" if you are coding for the web!
Rating: Summary: Good Book, but... Review: JavaScript Bible is an awesome book. I learnt a lot with it. It taught me a lot of details of document objects, methods and so forth which are crucial in becoming a good JavaScript programmer. If from the very beginning of the book you find it kind of difficult to handle, don't give up, procede; this is the author's method - first does a rough overview, and later goes into more details. You might even find it helpful as I did. But there's always a "but"... This book is not for those who are totally new in programming field and have no introductory knowledge of programming concepts.
Rating: Summary: Started Off Great, Downhill From There...... Review: Javascript Bible is a huge paradox, and a huge disappointment. I'm the typical purchaser of the book--HTML-literate looking to learn Javascript. It came highly recommended, so I immediately purchased it. In retrospect, I should have bought Javascript Sourcebook instead--I learned HTML with that superb "Sourcebook" series, and i should have stuck with it. The Javascript Bible starts off promising for the beginner, and introduces JS well. But it then jumps into hundreds of objects and functions and doesnt explain their context and placement. I was lost. Another reviewer here said you'll get lost after Chap4--boy, is he ever right! After Chap4, the inexperienced JS programmer will be absolutely befuddled and clueless. To its credit, the book offers lots of code examples; but it doesn't explain how and why the code was written. I'm very disappointed. In short, if you've never programmed in JS before, this book won't teach you. No way.
Rating: Summary: Not The Best Review: I bought this thick book (over 1000 pages) for $90AU and expected that by the time I finish reading it I would know Javascript from Start to Finish with no hinderences. I think this book would be very good for people that already know Javascript moderately because its reference is very extensice and good, but for teaching the language I don't think it qualifies as a good read. It is not layed out very well for newbies, and what about errors, even though there is a webpage at www.dannyg.com to download and read, it is very annoying to have to look at the error sheet to see if the example given doesn't have any errors to confuse the situation any more. For $90 I don't think it is the best Javascript book available on the market.
Rating: Summary: JavaScript Bible 3rd Edition Review: I am a VB developer and a newbie to JavaScript and HTML. This book is just what I needed to get my feet wet and started in JavaScript. The examples were very easy to follow and Mr. Goodman explained each section with simplicity so that a beginner with no programming knowledge could dive in and start scripting. For those of you who are looking for a good JavaScript book that will take you from beginning to advanced, this is the one.
Rating: Summary: Javascript Bible, 3rd Edition Review: I am a newbie to JavaScript. This book got off to a good start, but then proved disappointing from Chapter 4 onward. Examples were given that used syntax that were not yet explained and I could not understand what the author was trying to say or comprehend the concept. It is pretty bad when you read an chapter, attempt an exercise, review the answer in the appendixes and still can't understand out what the author is trying to convey.
Rating: Summary: Almost Perfect Review: Despite what you may read in any of the negative reviews listedhere, this book is absolutely exhaustive in it's JavaScriptcoverage. Covering everything from browser version support to OS/platform detection to bug descriptions and workarounds. The single solitary reason I give this book only four stars is because of a very common mistake made by almost all programming books, introducing new terms to the reader before covering them in the text. Introducing a JavaScript object by burying it in a complex script filled with as yet unexplained terms makes it difficult or impossible to comprehend the term in question. Even in light of this one drawback, I still VERY highly recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: You wont learn Javascript from this Review: This is my third Javascript book.Like the others, the author teaches you some very basic scripts, then expects you to be able to write and comprehend some huge script with things you haven't learned yet. It's like someone showing you how to check the oil in a car, then saying "Ok, now rebuild the engine with what I've shown you" Very dissapointing as it started out ok then launched into way advanced things.
Rating: Summary: Warning: for Beginners only Review: Anyone who has used Javascript before and has read the information provided on Microsoft's website will find little or no new information in this book.
