Summary: A lot of factual knowledge, could be more Real World
Review: The truth is that it is a very good book. Well written, easy toread, great review questions and the CDs also have some interestinginfo on it, even though they are demos. It is, however, missing a little of real world info. For example in Ch.4 it mentions 100VG-AnyLAN. The only place I have seen that is in this book. I had to research to find out that it was implemented by one University some years ago but no one else uses it. It did not mention that in the book at all (that it was not widely used). I also agree that it needs to be used in conjunction with the other books that form the set if you plan to actually take the exam...

Summary: Very Helpful for both Microsoft and CompTIA
Review: Anyone who knows what it takes to become an MCSE knows that thefirst step is exam 070-058 or Networking Essentials. Also anyone whoknows certifications knows that Network+ certification replaces the 070-058 exam. Now we have a book that will make sure you can pass both!

From the dreaded OSI Model to TCP/IP to network hardware to even networking cables and topologies, this 670 plus page fountain of information is well worth [it.] There is no other book I found like it.

The skips no objective on either exam, and gives you a wealth of information to help you pass both exams. There is review questions at the end of each chapter, real world problems throughout the book and even objective test tips making this book a hard to beat deal.

As with most books on this subject there is material on cd-rom. This book includes 2, 1 with practice tests and the other with video training material and some of the most comprehensive exercises I have ever seen. Sybex you have a winner! END

Summary: It is lacking in many areas
Review: This book lack many topics if you are using it for the exam. It also is lacking in the Index section as well as term definitions. Use it as a sup to other materials.

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: DO NOT USE THIS AS ONLY SOURCE TO PASS TEST!
Review: Just to confirm what many have already said:

I used this book as a single source to take the test. I am NOT a beginner with computers. I failed the test -- TWICE.

Summary: Good book - I thought it had bang for the buck
Review: I recommend this book I used it along with the Exam Cram book the two complete each other. You might be able to pass with this book alone but why waste the 100 dollars if you don't. The goal of any test should be to pass on the first try. This book and the exam cram ISBN # 1-57610-193-4 will help you meet that goal. I recommend this book and give it the 5 star seal of approval. I passed this test on the first try with an 833 and I am a MCP. As with most of these study guides it helps to use more than one.

Summary: Very good book.
Review: This a very well written book and is very capable of getting you through the Networking Essentials exam. I used this book along with the Microsoft Readiness Review book/cd and passed with a score of 90. I would recommend this book to anyone who is planning to take the exam based on self study.

Summary: Tests on CD need some improvement
Review: Overall a good book, a bit leaning towards the new comers in the IT field. The only disappointment is the accompanying CD's. They need to add more questions, more tests and so on. The interactive Cd containing some video clips on Networking Basics is completely useless.

Summary: The best book!
Review: I am currently studying for NW exam and I think that this book covers everything there is to know about networking. It is clear, easy to read and you don't have to be in expert in networking when you start reading it, as some other books assume you are :)

Summary: Scanty Material
Review: I found this book to be vague and not nearly satisfying. It only touches on critical network components, especially for anyone who wants to understand what's going on in the wiring closet and patch panels. The info on WAN technologies is barely there, the section on line signalling confusing. I used all Sybex books to get my MCSE (I did get it, in the end) but the books were very little help and I'm not planning on wasting my money on another Sybex title when I found them to be so generally useless.

Summary: Not really enough ...
Review: This book is really not enough for the MCSE - Networking Essential examination! It is only suitable for beginner to have a study about networking, but for the exam purpose, you must use other books to help, for example MCSE core exam in a Nutshell.
