Summary: The Cake Mix Doctor is disappointing
Review: I was quite disappointed in this cookbook. I have tried about 15 different recipes and most are just average. I went exactly by the recipe and used exactly the ingredients called for in the recipe. I think the best one I tried was the "Sock it to Me" cake. (This is an old recipe I had used many years ago). That cake was very good! There are several more recipes I want to try and hopefully, I'll find one my family really likes!

Summary: It doesn't get any better than this...
Review: Anne Byrn's book is a lot of fun! Not only are her cake recipes delicious, but they are foolproof as well! Her directions are clear and concise, and most all the recipes call for easy to come by ingredients. This book is wonderful for the novice baker who lacks confidence in his or her own skills, and for the adept as well who is simply looking for a new twist on tried and true favorites. I especially love the section where Ms. Byrn expounds on the science of baking, and how to understand what is going on in your mixing bowl! Invaluable!

Summary: I wish I could give this 6 stars, a great cookbook!
Review: I read great reviews about this book and asked for it for Christmas last year.
It was fun to read, as Anne gives great tips you can use with ANY cake.

This year I have made at least 10 cakes from her book ( a couple I have made 3 times). And except for a disappointing lemon cake (tasted more like mix than anything else), the cakes have been fabulous. My favorite cake so far is
the Pumpkin Spice cake with Buttercream frosting. I have taken this to many Holiday parties and it is a hit. It is a fun alternative to pumpkin pie. And everyone likes it because it is not too sweet, or chocolate, etc.

Another great cake is the Milk Chocolate Pound cake. I can make
is using my food processor in minutes and it is great to take to parties.

I have always loved making cakes from mixes and scratch, but now I keep going back to her book. I get fast, easy delicious results that can impress anybody (even my mother-in-law).

If you are a busy working mom like me, this will make you feel like
Martha Stewart in your free time.

Enjoy!

Summary: Fooled my family...
Review: I just purchased this book so I have only had a chance to make one recipe. I picked the Gooey Butter Cake since I had all ingredients readily on hand. The cake was a bit sweet for me, so I donated the remainder to my parents and brother who couldn't stop talking about it for a week. They claimed the crust was worthy of a professional pasty chef! (I haven't yet let on that it came from a box.) This book is well worth the money and produces reliable quick results.

Summary: Great recipes in a great book!
Review: I love this book, and I wasn't expecting to. I received it as a wedding gift and so far it has been wonderful. My problem with cake mixes is not the taste - it's the fact that they are boring. So, I use this as a great way to easily create fancy cakes that taste great with less work. Every one that I have made has gotten rave reviews.

The best part of this book is the index of cakes in the front. The first 4 or so pages are of small pictures of every cake, in full color. It gives you a great way to easily scan to see which cakes look good for the occasion. Once you find the one that looks best, follow the page number to the recipe.
.
I cannot vouch for whether or not a cake from this book would pass the test of a "cake purist." I somehow doubt it would - if you know it has cake mix in it, you're always going to taste the mix even if no one else will. If you really, truly don't like cake mix and can't stand the thought of it, I probably wouldn't recommend getting this book. There are other easy cake cookbooks out there that don't involve mix.

If you are dieting, of course don't expect this to be a book full of diet food. Most recipes call for plenty of eggs, egg yolks, and at least one stick of real butter in both the cake and the icing. However, the last chapter is a whole section of lighter cakes using angel food cake mix.

So, if you aren't afraid of mix and you're not afraid of fat, try this book - it's sure to please.

Summary: Great cakes!
Review: This is a fun cookbook. I often look through it for ideas and am always impressed with Byrn's creatvity. The ideas are unique and quite varied. She offers tons of chocolate recipes, cheesecakes, cakes with fruit and a chapter of cakes (Such as Red Velvet that you might not make all of time, but are still intersting).

Every cake that I have baked has turned out beautifully. There are photographs (albeit small ones) of every recipe that are quite helpful in assembling the cakes. The instructions are clear and easy for bakers of all mastery levels to follow. The chocolate cakes are very rich, but of course very tasty.

I wish she offred more variety with some of the cakes that a 13x9 pan. I would like to see more than one way some of the cakes could be prepared. Despite this, the cakes really are good and you would never guess that a mix was invovled.

The author inludes lots of sidebars that offer baking hints- very helpful. I also likes the section about the history of baking mixes. I think this book would be a great way to get kids hooked on baking as well. I love this book and plan to buy the sequel!

Summary: The Cake Mix Doctor
Review: I own both of Anne Byrn's Cake Doctor cook books and they are the best, easiest ever. Every cake is better than most bakery cakes and you start with boxed cake mixes.
Suprise you friends and family with a fresh baked cake tomorrow.

Summary: I can't believe it came from the same box
Review: I was skeptical of buying this book last year, but it was a great "filler" Christmas present for my wife. So far we've made about 4 cakes, using recipes from this book. The first one left me less than impressed, but that's only because it was *too* chocolatey for me. However, the rest of the cakes have all been phenomenal. Despite my dislike for ultra-rich chocolate cake, I just picked up the "sequel" - _The Chocolate Cake Mix Doctor_ and instead of being a "filler" present, I think it'll be a "featured" one this year :)

Hope you found this helpful!

Summary: Good Cakes Made Simple!!
Review: This cookbook is terrific! I have tried several of the recipes in this book and they've all come out moist and delicious! My friends and family swear they're from scratch. I've always found box cakes bearable, but canned frostings completely unacceptable. This improves those box cakes and blows the canned frostings away!!! Try it, you won't regret it!!!
