Rating: Summary: Easy to Follow, Great Results Review: I am married to a Cuban who sorely misses his mother's excellent cooking. I have a whole number of Cuban cookbooks, in english and in spanish, and this is the one I turn to again and again. Every recipe I've tried from this book has been delicious. My husband eats seconds of every dish I prepare and how I love to hear him say "Ay mami, que rica es la comida!" The recipes are clear and easy to follow and deliver results every time. If you need a cookbook to prepare cuban food - BUY THIS BOOK.
Rating: Summary: The absolute BEST Cuban Cookbook. Review: I can't say enough about this book. If I could give it 10 stars I would. This is, by far, the BEST authentic Cuban cookbook (and I have several books on Cuban cuisine). I am Cuban-American and grew up eating Cuban food. I have always seen my mother cook but, as common with experienced cooks, they don't keep track of measurements. They just know. Since I am an inexperienced cook, I don't just know. I had a choice: experiment or find a book. In my search for an authentic cookbook, I found this one. This book even includes recipes for dishes that my mother never learned to make! I would HIGHLY recommend it to people who suffer from my same dilemma with Mami. My only qualm: The author states at the beginning of the book that this is only a selection of the recipes. I hope that she writes another cookbook with ALL the recipes in her collection!
Rating: Summary: The Best Review: I enjoyed Mary's book very much. Her recipes are very detailed, with specific notations regarding temperatures and utincils. I've tried 4 of her recipes so far and they turned out super! I enjoyed Marys family remembrances especially, very touching. The motif of the book is very unique for a cook book and I wish her well.....Bob Nichols
Rating: Summary: THIS IS THE ONE! Review: I have purchased and have been given 8 Cuban cookbooks over the years...and this is the only one I use. My parents are both Cuban. I grew up in Miami and now live in LA. Unfortunately my mother never taught me to cook her amazing Cuban dishes while I was growing up. It is difficult to get her recipes over the phone because it's always a pinch of this and dash of that. This cookbook is amazing. I have made arroz con pollo, picadillo, carne con papas, ropa vieja, arroz con lentejas and they have all come out the way I know they should. Most importantly, the recipes in this book do not request ingredients that I know my mother never had in the kitchen. I purchased this cookbook as a Christmas present for my brothers and sisters and they agree!
Rating: Summary: My grandmother would be proud of my cooking from this book. Review: I moved away from Miami, into the mono-cultural Utah and found myself going crazy realizing I couldn't get my grandmother to airmail me some picadillo or other comfort food. I had to go out and learn how to make it myself, and this is the book I chose. There are things in this book I hadn't even heard of before while living in Miami. My only complaints are that my Ropa Vieja, even when I follow it dilegently doens't seem to come out the way it should, and the Torrejas (I had never had Cuban French Toast) weren't what I had expected. Other than that, with a decent amount of time on my hands, I can even impress my grandmother, now that I'm back in South Florida. I do recommend Miami Spice or Cuban Cocina for some neo-cuisine, but for the classics, I wouldn't give this book up even if my mother wanted me to!
Rating: Summary: Memories of a Cuban Kichen: More than 200 classic receipes Review: I was a little disappointed because there are no picture to compare. However the receipes are great and the instructions are easy, so far it tastes good.
Rating: Summary: This book is really terrific! Review: I was born in Cuba and was used to Cuban cooking with minimal ingredients. Once we moved to this country, my mother was able to cook our food the way it was intended to be cooked. I have re-discovered these wonderful flavors all over again by following the author's recipes. Although I am too young to have experienced the "real Cuba", as my mother called it, I was enthralled by the author's experiences in our homeland. This book has been a blessing. My not so Cuban husband has loved every recipe that I have taken the time to make.
Rating: Summary: Truly authentic and GOOD Review: I was born in Cuba, of Cuban parents whose great-great grandparents were Cuban/Spanish, and grew up entirely on Cuban food. I was too busy doing other things to watch my mother as she cooked, and she has never measured an ingredient in her life, she just knows how much to use. Now living in Ohio, where Cuban cuisine is routinely confused with Mexican (Note - Cuban food does NOT use hot chile peppers or cayenne, only onions, garlic, green/red peppers, salt & black pepper)I long for Cuban food. This book lets me prepare AUTHENTIC Cuban food my entire family enjoys.
Rating: Summary: Easy to follow recipes and very traditional Cuban fare. Review: Mary Urrutia captured the essence of Cuban cooking in her book, tasty and simple home fare. The recipes are easy to follow. She suggests substitute ingredients for those of us who live in areas where the "criollo" ingredients may not be readily available. Every dish I have made from the book has been greeted with rave reviews by my family and friends. Urrutia has made it possible for those who follow her recipes to be labeled a "great Cuban cook"!
Rating: Summary: Authentic Plus Review: My Christmas Eve dinner was more than a success. Everyone raved about my black beans and pork. I must admit, it was the best. It was alway hard to copy my moms recipes. She always added a pinch of this or a dash of that. That's very hard to duplicate. Now I have exact measurments and the result was my mom's cooking.Ilove this book and am sending one to my nephew , daughter and son's fiancee.
