Rating: Summary: Just like Abuela's cooking! Review: My father is Cuban and I grew up learning to love Yuca con Mojo and Guayaba. There is this thing about Cubans and food, and it is remarkable how people that left the country 45 years ago still talk and eat the cubano way. As a professional Chef, I have used this book to develop new dishes and flavors in my kitchen. Yes I have a Cuban grandmother and lots of aunts that gave me great recipes, but this book is a very complete collection of the most traditional recipes, and of all the cuban cookbooks I have looked at, I would say this is the best.
From the famous Ajiaco Criollo, to the delicious sandwiches (Pan con Lechón, Medianoche, Elena Ruz), to the delicious Pastel de Pollo (Chicken Pot Pie) that I absolutely love and have prepared many many times, the Arroz Congri (Cuban Red Beans and Rice), to all the Flans and Puddings and my father's favorite Guava Tart (Pastel de Guayaba). You will never get tired of this book. Every single recipe we have tried in our family, according to my father, closely resembles his own mother's home cooking. I absolutely love it and would definately recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Even a Canadian can make Cuban Food now Review: My wife is Cuban-Canadian and missed her grandmother's cooking. Try as she might, she could never get the black beans to turn out right. After following the recipe, I was able to give my wife the black beans she remembered. Now my wife can prepare all of the recipes that she's used to, but never learned how to make before she left Cuba.
Rating: Summary: Good traditional Cuban home cooking Review: One of the best cook books I've found for cooking traditional Cuban meals. I use it daily. The dishes listed aren't fancy but more in keeping with the type of meals mother would have made. Since I grew up in the U.S. it was also interesting to read a little about Cuban history and the author's family. If you're looking for fancy restaurant-type recipes or the "new Cuban cuisine" you won't find it here.
Rating: Summary: touching Review: This book brought back memories. It was very authentic and easy to understand. The stories behind each recipe was touching.
Rating: Summary: Memories of a Cuban Kitchen Review: This book is, by far, the most "authentic" Cuban cuisine cookbook ever written! Not only are the recipes easy to follow, the charming stories and images of Ms. Urrutia-Randelman's family are delightful to read. The author's detailed description of her memories and of Cuban history associated with each recipe bring the Cuban experience of yesteryear alive for all to experience. A wonderful addition to anyone's cookbook library, for anyone with Cuban roots or not. A great gift for the holidays!!!
Rating: Summary: Great cookbook!! Review: This is honestly a wonderful cookbook... The recipes are very easy to prepare & turn out delicious. I couldn't even make rice before this, and now I can cook. (and it actually tastes good)
I recommend it!
Rating: Summary: A must have in every kitchen! Review: We love to cook on the weekends, and we especially love to cook something special from this cookbook. Out of three recipes that we cooked so far since we had this, all of them have been excellent. We are purchasing more of this cookbook so we could share it with our families and friends. You have to add this to your cookbook collection, I promise you won't be sorry.
Rating: Summary: For Anyone Who Wants To Cook REAL Cuban Food!!!!!!!! Review: WOW!!!! Unless you get recipes from your Cuban grandmother there is nothing better than this book. The writer's lovely descriptions of her days as a little girl in Cuba and the can't miss recipes are what make this book a true gem. I was happy to see recipes for dishes that I grew up with but never knew how to make. If you have the time and calories to spare make the Pastel De Pollo it is divino!!! The recipe for Mojo Criollo was great, I made it with Yuca for Thanksgiving and my entire Cuban family thought it was my grandmother's recipe. Gracias Mary your book will be treasured in my home.
