Rating: Summary: This book is wonderful! Review: I started out years ago with the Make-A-Mix cookbook, then came upon the More Make-A-Mix cookbook, and loved it too. I recently decided to get out those cookbooks and get organized again, however I have misplaced them. So I bought the newer version, but noticed that the cream puff recipe isn't printed in it. I would dearly love to get that recipe as the Hot Chicken Salad and the Chicken-A-La-King recipes are delicious served in them.
Rating: Summary: What a Concept! Review: I'm currently ordering my fourth copy of Make-A-Mix; I got my first copy in the 70s, and have consistantly gone back to it over the years, until each copy was dog-earred, stained, and falling apart-- all of which are signs of a truly loved cookbook! What a great way to get healthy, wholesome food-- with no additives-- that tastes great! My husband and I, who both work, routinely look forward to a "cooking weekend", wherein we order our ingredients (We can actually do that part on-line with our local grocery store), pick them up, pour a glass of wine, and start cooking! Within a few hours, the house smells like heaven, our freezer is full of terrific meals, and we both feel really good about what we accomplished. If you want to combine the convenience of mixes with the taste of delicious, old-fashioned "like grandma used to make" food, this is definately the cookbook for you. We like to make the mixes and share them: with parents who no longer find cooking fun (and are tempted by those dreadful frozen entrees), with siblings who have kids and both parents work, in between taking the kids to activities, doctors' appointments, etc., and with friends who ask, "Wow! What's *in* this???" Also great as a shower gift, graduation gift, or just an "I'm thinking of you!" gift!
Rating: Summary: lost pages Review: Imagine my excitment when I found this book at a garage sale!!! I was especially grateful to find receipes for taco seasoning mix, chicken coating mix etc. as these are never on my kitchen shelf when I need them. However, what was my dismay when I found that instead of pages 17-33, I had two sets of pages 33-48. The maddening part of this was that when I looked in the Gift Section for ideas for Christmas (I like to begin to prepare in July)and found a Gingerbread mix, Basic Cookie Mix, Garden Vegetable Mix, I thought that I had hit the jackpot. Sadly, all of these recipes are on the missing pages. If anyone would be willing to email me the missing pages 17-33, I would be most grateful. Thanks Christine Please use "Christmas Gingerbread" as the subject.
Rating: Summary: Pleased to see book back on the book store shelves Review: Like so many other reviewers of the book, I have used this book for a long time. My favorite recipes are the Mexican Meat Mix and the Basic Cookie Mix. One mix will make several different kinds of cookies. It's so easy to make the meat mix and pop it in the freezer to use later. Besides saving money by making your own mix, with this recipe, the most inexpensive meats can be used because of the long slow cooking. I was disappointed the Oatmeal Cookie Mix recipe was not included in the revised edition. The chocolate chip cookies from this recipe are so good they are almost adictive. I have received many compliments on the cookies I make and have used the Mix has gifts. When I saw this new revised book on the shelf at the store, I bought all they had.

Rating: Summary: A Must Have Book!! Review: My husband bought the revised version of Make A Mix for my birthday at my request, when it came out. I find this book to be my favorite cookbook. I keep a list of all the ingredients just for the baking alone, and what I need for the month for the other recipes. If you buy on sale, your savings would be more. If you ever notice on back of the packets or boxes of mixes you have to add products anyway, and these mixes has preservatives we don't need. With my work, and activities through out the week, I find this to be less time consuming and still tastes homemade. Looking forward to the next book!!
Rating: Summary: Great for those with allergies Review: My husband has allergies to just about every preservative, artificial flavoring, artificial coloring, and any other food additive on the market. All the stuff you really shouldn't eat anyway. I cook from scratch mostly, and this book has been a wonderful addition to my kitchen. Last night I made the chocolate syrup; almost all the chocolate syrups on the market have artificial flavorings. My family loves the chocolate pudding from scratch (just three ingredients -- did you ever look at a pudding mix box?), and my kids are so used to tasting my home-cooked meals that they think the processed meals are gross. The money we save is great, but the time I save in the kitchen is even better. I highly recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: The ease of a mix -- The satisfaction of "made from scratch" Review: My mother used these cookbooks as I was growing up, and many of our favorite recipes are from here. She promised us each a set as wedding gifts, but they were nowhere to be found. Now, 12 years AFTER our weddings we are ECSTATIC to find them back in print!! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!! If you haven't tried these recipes, you've gotta try 'em now! They're the best! (Especially the brownies and chimichangas!)
Rating: Summary: Make-a-Mix Continues to thrive Review: My name is Karine Eliason. I am one of the authors of "Make-a-Mix". The book that is currently on the market is a revision that we made in 1995. Through the years we have learned the benefits of reducing sugar and fat in recipes so we included these kind of revisions in our most recent edition. We also have a page devoted to how the cook and further reduce fats and sugars, if that is the preference. We have appreciated all the favorable comments we have received over the years from cooks who have benefited from this unique way of getting good-tasting, nutritious food into meal planning. As a sad, side note, one of our authors, Madeline Westover, died this past June from a brain aneurism. She was such a loving, wonderful person. Nevada and I miss her terribly. We are considering our next project to be dedicated to her memory.
Rating: Summary: Wish I'd had it a long time ago. Review: My sister lent me her copy of the original book written in '78. I loved it and found one for myself here, along with a few copies to give as Christmas gifts. My husband and kids have loved everything I've made. There were some recipes in the original that I wish had been put in this edition too, especially the rice mixes. But it is a very good book, with enough ideas and recipes to keep your family happy for a long time. The recipes are very simple and are easy to change to suit your needs and likes, and to make a little healthier. I love knowing exactly what I'm eating, being able to change things to how I like them, and the money I save doesn't hurt either.
